L. Neil Smith Libertarian
L. Neil Smith has twice won the Prometheus Award, given by the Libertarian Futurist Society for outstanding science fiction with libertarian themes. His Prometheus Award-winning novels were The Probability Broach (1982) and Pallas (1994). The Probability Broach was his first novel. It pictures a parallel libertarian earth, and wonderfully combines humor, action, suspense and libertarian ideology. The libertarian society in the book, and some of its characters, are further explored in sequels. Smith has written around twenty science fiction novels, many explicitly libertarian. He served on the Platform Committee of the Libertarian Party in the mid-70's, and in 1978 ran for state legislator as a Libertarian Party candidate, gaining 15% of the vote with a total expenditure of $44.00. L. Neil Smith is also an outspoken gun rights activist. He is founder and International Coordinator of the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus, and is an NRA Life Member. Following is a list of some of his novels, along with brief summaries.

Bill of Rights Buttons and Cards Almost Ready to Go!
Friends, here's the latest, and, I hope, my next-to-last update on the Bill of Rights Enforcement button project that you may have heard about. For those of you who haven't been aware of it, here's what it's all about. Unless you've been living in a cave (somewhere other than Afghanistan) you know whatever it may be doing overseas, whatever we may individually think of it the current political regime has been using what happened on September 11 as an excuse to undermine and destroy the rights guaranteed us by the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Naturally, the socialist mass media are all for this and have spread their legs and lips as wide as they can for an administration rapidly proving to be as evil and perverse as the one that preceded it. More dismaying, many whom we might have expected to join us in opposing the Republocratic Party's fascist opportunism have instead endorsed it one way or another. The freedom movement is very rapidly losing whatever focus it could be said to have had before September 11. As a tentative first step in rebuilding the movement and returning the country to the rule of law, I've asked my friend Scott Bieser to design a campaign-type button representing our insistence that the Bill of Rights be enforced like the highest law of the land it happens to be. I've also written a brief explanation of its vital importance to our way of life, to be printed on a small card that goes with each button.

Reviewer's Rating User Rating Ali G Indahouse (2002) Reviewed by Neil Smith Updated 20 March 2002 The public's insatiable appetite for Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G character - a white gangsta rapper wannabe hailing from leafy English suburbia - made his eventual transition to the big screen a racing certainty. "Kevin & Perry Go Large" proved two years ago that what works on the small screen doesn't always transfer to the less-forgiving medium of film. The good news for fans of Cohen's ribald creation, though, is that "Ali G Indahouse" delivers more than its fair share of saucy hilarity. Some viewers, however, might feel discomfited by the way his sexist, homophobic buffoon has started to embody the very attitudes Cohen originally set out to parody.

Reviewer's Rating User Rating In the Bedroom (2002) Reviewed by Neil Smith Updated 23 January 2002 In a year where Oscar candidates are even thinner on the ground than usual, Todd Field's intense, superbly acted chamber piece has emerged as a leading contender. It doesn't hurt that Field is an actor himself: the Academy has always looked kindly on hyphenates. But if "In the Bedroom" does scoop a few statuettes in March, it will probably be down to its cast, who root the rather melodramatic narrative in recognisably human emotions and failings. The peace and tranquillity of a small village in Maine is shattered when the son of doctor Matt Fowler ( Wilkinson ) and his music teacher wife Ruth (Spacek) is killed by his girlfriend's ex-husband.

I was waiting for my wife and daughter to get ready for skating this morning, when what to my wondering eyes should appear but a bit on PBS's Victory Garden up until then we'd been watching Italian cooking shows about a "tropical rainforest" research establishment in Costa Rica that covers 100,000 acres and takes six days to walk across. Costa Rica isn't a very big country. On my map it looks about the same size as the Colorado county I live in. So my first thought was, how many Indians got screwed out of their farms so that this Alan Alda wannabe they were interviewing could lord it over his very own toy jungle. For some odd reason the interviewer forgot to ask him about that. He did say some interesting things, although a few of them he said by accident. He pointed out a huge old forest giant on which a lot of other stuff was growing (the tree itself didn't look too healthy) and told his interviewer in an ogasmic gush that the tree had something like 200 different plant species attached to it or living among its roots.
