Concentration in the Women's Studies Major Queer Studies Go to Women, Race and Culture Concentration Requirements in the Major Main Course Page Queer Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field whose goal is to analyze antinormative sexual identities, performances, discourses and representations in order ultimately to destabilize the notion of normative sexuality and gender. Queer studies comes out of a critique of identity politics. It rejects essentialized conceptualization[s] of sexuality, gender, and sexual identity as innate or fixed. It represents a deconstruction of hegemonic conceptions of sexual and gender categories within straight, gay and lesbian communities. In queer studies, the interpretation, enactment, and destabilizing of sexual identities is linked to that of gender categories. The queer studies concentration's home in women's studies makes explicit these links between theories of gender and sexuality. In the queer studies concentration students are encouraged to consider the historical and theoretical foundations of queer studies as well as the potential consequences (epistemological and political) of a queer studies critique. This might include attention to the connections between gay and lesbian studies and queer studies, feminist studies and queer studies and the implications of a queer studies critique for other disciplines. Possible areas of focus include: the history of sexuality, social movements, politics, anthropology, literature, theater, art, film, science and sexology, public policy, law, ethnic studies, music, demography, geography, media analysis, philosophy, etc.

Mulholland Department of Biochemistry School of Medical Sciences University of Bristol UK School of Chemistry University of Bristol UK Abstract Aspartate- beta -semialdehyde dehydrogenase (ASADH) is an important enzyme as it precedes the first branch point in the biosynthetic pathways of lysine, threonine, isoleucine, methionine and diaminopimelate, a component of bacterial cell walls. It catalyses the reductive dephosphorylation of beta -aspartyl phosphate to aspartate- beta -semialdehyde utilising NADPH. ASADH is found in plants, most bacteria and fungi, but not in higher animals and blocks in this pathway have already been shown to be lethal. [1,2] Therefore ASADH is a prospective drug target for herbicides, fungicides and antibacterials. Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out on the active sites of ASADH from E.coli. ASADH is a homodimer, each monomer of which contains a NADP-binding domain, a dimerisation domain and an active site. The structure, obtained by X-ray crystallography [3], used in these studies is a holo-nucleotide bound form of the enzyme. One of the active sites shows the inhibitor S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide bound, while the other contains water molecules that approximate the location of substrate binding. Various Stochastic Boundary Molecular Dynamics [4] (SBMD) simulations have been performed on both of the active sites using different conformations and protonation states of key residues. The data collected have been analysed and compared to the crystallographic results [5] and with previous SBMD simulations of the apo structure [6] to reveal insights into the active site interactions and binding of the inhibitor.

Researchers in Taiwan have solved the seventy year-old mystery of how a soil-dwelling fungus lassoes and strangles passing worms. The grisly business relies on pressure sensing a fact that could help agricultural biotechnologists exploit the fungus' blood lust to control worm populations Arthrobotrys dactyloides throttles its prey with nooses of three cells held out on a short stalk. A nematode worm passing through one of these traps triggers its closure. The cells triple in volume in a tenth of a second, constricting and ensnaring the worm for consumption. The American fungus expert Charles Drechsler discovered this much in the 1930s. Since Dreschler's time the conventional way to make the fungal traps constrict in the absence of nematodes has been to apply a drop of warm water to them. But temperature changes seemed unlikely to be the true trigger. Rubbing the rings with a needle also worked, but as this is difficult to perform, work on A. dactyloide
