Artist: SMITH/JOHN STEVENS, GARY Title: Label: ECSTATIC PEACE Format: CD Price: Catalog #: E#52 A series of seven improvisations for electric guitar and drums, recorded live to DAT in a London studio in 1993. This presents the young UK free guitarist Smith alongside the late, legendary Spontaneous Music Ensemble drummer Stevens (also found briefly on mini-trumpet, in what unfortunately will have to be remembered as one of his final studio dates). Gary Smith has released one amazing solo CD previously ( Rhythm Guitar on the Impetus label), and here develops a full palette of what has been referred to as "electroacoustic free/scratch guitar," a decidedly post-Bailey language of volume-pedal-manipulated in/out chatter that mixes dense rhythmic build ups with long, stretched note explorations (that occasionally almost drowse themselves to a non-blues-centered Mazzacane-esque haze). The whole thing coalesces with beautiful fragility, adding a new sub chapter to the contemporary world of non-metered improv. Previous Page Index of Artists Next Page

145. My Two McCoy Families
Family history of john Wynne McCoy featuring john Wingate McCoy and Elizabeth smith; and john Wesley McCoy and Louisa Adelaide Whitesides.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~chevaud/realmac/mccoy.htm
My Two Ancestral McCoy Families
John Wingate McCoy and Elizabeth Smith
My first McCoy family came from Maryland about 1815 to Adams County, Ohio, where John Wingate McCoy met his bride, Elizabeth Smith, daugther of Reuben Smith and Sarah Beach Clark. After a few attempts to find a new home in Indiana, they finally settled in the early 1840's in Brown County, Illinois. John Wingate McCoy was probably the son of Alexander McCoy by his first wife. Alexander's children by his second wife, Hannah McCullough, did settle in Adams Co., Ohio and Brown Co., IL, where many of them appear in county records.
John Wesley McCoy and Louisa Adelaide Whitesides
My great-great-grandparents were married in Brown Co., IL August 14, 1856. Because Louisa was a descendant of a different McCoy family (see below), their marriage linked two of the several McCoy families of Brown Co.
The Other Ancestral McCoy
This story accounts for two of the McCoy tribes in Brown Co., IL. Another one came early from Kentucky, and at least one later Irish McCoy family also lived there. None of these families appears to be related to the feud family of Pike Co., KY. For a report of the descendants of John Wingate McCoy, look for my "Descendants of Alexander McCoy" pages on my Family Tree Maker web site. For a report of the descendants of Louisa McCoy, look for my "Genealogy in French-Speaking Switzerland" pages on my Family Free Maker web site, choosing "Descendants of Jean Pierre Samuel Marcel" from the table of contents under that heading.

History of Jamestown

: History
The Far East has its Mecca, Palestine its Jersualem, France its Lourdes, and Italy its Loretto, but America's only shrines are her altars of patriotism - the first and most potent being Jamestown; the sire of Virginia, and Virginia the mother of this great Republic. from a 1907 Virginia guidebook
In June of 1606, King James I granted a charter to a group of London entrepreneurs, the Virginia Company , to establish a satellite English settlement in the Chesapeake region of North America. By December, 108 settlers sailed from London instructed to settle Virginia, find gold and a water route to the Orient. Some traditional scholars of early Jamestown history believe that those pioneers could not have been more ill-suited for the task. Because Captain John Smith identified about half of the group as "gentlemen", it was logical, indeed, for historians to assume that these gentry knew nothing of or thought it beneath their station to tame a wilderness. Recent historical and archaeological research at the site of Jamestown suggest that at least some of the gentlemen and certainly many of the artisans, craftsmen, and laborers that accompanied them all made every effort to make the colony succeed.

He was introduced to the newly invented technique of mezzotinting by John Lloyd, a printseller. During his career Beckett engraved mezzotint portraits, principally after the designs of Sir Peter Lely, Godfrey Kneller, Wissing and Riley. He also engraved religious, mythological and landscape scenes after Heemskerk and other masters. Beckett’s earlier mezzotints were published by Alexander Browne or Edward Cooper. Around 1685, however, he became his own publisher and printseller and operated an establishment at the Old Bailey, London. Here he took on John Smith as both a pupil and assistant. Smith acquired both Beckett’s business and inventory of plates around 1688. Among Isaac Beckett’s greatest mezzotint portraits are Petrus Lelly Eques Sir Godfrey Kneller King Charles II James Duke of York The Duchess of Grafton and Lady Williams John Smith: Considered the finest mezzotint engraver of his era, John Smith was first apprenticed to a painter in Moorfields. After his apprenticeship Smith moved to London and studied mezzotint techniques from both Isaac Beckett and J. Van der Vaart. His earliest mezzotints were admired by Sir Godfrey Kneller who commissioned Smith to engrave a large number of his portrait paintings. Many of Smith’s finest mezzotints are after the designs of Kneller and include portraits of Charles II, William III, Queen Mary, John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, Alexander Pope, John Locke, Sir Christopher Wren, William Congreve and Sir Godfrey Kneller. Smith also produced mezzotints after Sir Peter Lely and Italian Renaissance masters.

157. JOHN SMITH: Starving Time In Virginia
A description by john smith of the dire circumstances of the first years of the Virginia colony's settlement, 16071614.
http://www.nv.cc.va.us/home/nvsageh/Hist121/Part1/JohnSmith.htm
JOHN SMITH: Starving Time in Virginia In December 1606, the Virginia Company sent three ships to Virginia with 144 colonists, only 105 of whom actually disembarked at Jamestown the following May. Among them was Captain John Smith, a soldier-adventurer and promoter of the company, who became its chief historian. He had an especially resourceful spirit in many a dark day, and be saved the colony from starvation during the winter of 1608-1609 by obtaining corn from the Indians be had befriended. On an expedition to discover the source of the Chickahominy River, Captain Smith was captured by the Indians and was to be executed. As the controversial legend holds, Pocahontas saved his life by throwing herself upon him and entreating her father, Powhatan, to spare Smith. Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia , an indispensablethough at times unreliablework, is reprinted here in part. The selection deals with the events of 1607-1614 and is actually a series of reports or accounts by various persons with interpolations by Smith himself. Thus, part of the narrative covers an interval when he had "turned temporarily to England." With this lodging and diet, our extreme toil in bearing and planting palisades so strained and bruised us, and our continual labor in the extremity of the heat had so weakened us, as were cause sufficient to have made us as miserable in our native country, or any other place in the world.
