Maynard Smith, John British biologist
Maynard Smith was educated at Cambridge University, where he qualified as an engineer in 1941. He spent the next six years designing aircraft before deciding they were "noisy and old-fashioned" and moving to University College, London, to study zoology under J. B. S. Haldane. After obtaining his BSc in zoology in 1951 he remained as a lecturer in zoology until 1965 when he was appointed professor of biology at the University of Sussex. He became emeritus professor in 1985. Maynard Smith, known to a wide public for his lucid Theory of Evolution (1958), has emerged as one of the leading theorists of the postwar years. Much influenced by W. D. Hamilton and Robert MacArthur, and using concepts taken from the theory of games formulated by John von Neumann in the 1940s, he introduced in the 1970s the idea of an evolutionary stable strategy (ESS). Assuming that two animals are in conflict, then an ESS is one that, if adopted by the majority of the population, prevents the invasion of a mutant strategy. Stable strategies by definition thus tend to be mixed strategies.

Smith, John Smith, John, c. 1580 , English colonist in America, b. Willoughby, Lincolnshire, England. A merchant's apprentice until his father's death in 1596, he thereafter lived an adventurous life, traveling, fighting in wars against the Turks in Transylvania and Hungary, and surviving a period of slavery in Turkey. His own account of these adventures has been doubted by some investigators but has been substantiated in a number of particulars. Returning to England, he invested in the new London Company and in 1606 sailed from London for America with Capt. Christopher Newport . On arrival in Virginia, Smith was named a member of the governing council of the Jamestown settlement, although not permitted to serve immediately, and began his explorations of the surrounding territory. He established trade relations with the Native Americans, drew up a map of Virginia, and finally fell into the hands of the Native American chief Powhatan . Although there is no definite proof of the famous incident of Smith's being saved from death by Powhatan's daughter

SMITH, JOHN RAPHAEL
All this while Smith was under restraint, for thirteen weeks in all. His enemies would have sent him home, out of a sham commiseration for him; but he challenged their charges, and so established his innocency that Wingfield was adjudged to give him 200 as damages. After this, on 20th June 1607, Smith w-as admitted to the council. overtook the rioters the winter after he left, which is known inVirginian story as the starving time. Out of 490 persons in the colony in October 1609 all but 6o died by the following March. The rest of Smiths life can only be briefly touched upoii. The fourth period, 16101617, was chiefly spent in exploring Nusconcus, Canada and Pemaquid or North Virginia, to which,at his solicitation, Prince Charles gave the name of New England. His first object was to fish for cod and barter for furs, his next, to discover the coast-line with the view to settlement. The Toastmaster Tradition
The art of Toastmastering can be traced as far back as Hebrew times, and to the practices of the Greeks and Roman of offering toasts to their many gods and heroes. During the reign of King Charles 11, it was customary to drop pieces of spiced toast into wine to wine to improve its flavour, and by the 17th century the"Toasting" of friends and important guests at banquets had become very popular. The origins of Toastmastering as we know it today, are to be found in the 19th century, when private clubs began to appoint a member to act as a Master of Ceremonies. Today, professional Toastmasters like John Smith are skilled in the many and varied disciplines of event management. A good Toastmaster must be many things. For example, he must be an expert:

Civil War broke out in 1861, Smith voted against secession ; however, when Texas joined the fight, he promptly began to show his support for the Confederacy. After mustering up 120 Tarrant County men, Smith helped form Company K under the command of Col. William Steele. Joining the Seventh Regiment of the Texas Cavalry in Sibley's brigade, Smith fought with the Army of Western Louisiana in campaigns throughout New Mexico, Arizona, and Western Louisiana. He was severely wounded at Donaldsonville, Louisiana, in 1863 and slightly wounded at the battle of Mansfield, Louisiana, in 1864. In that same year Smith was promoted to colonel of his regiment, and he commanded 600 soldiers until the group disbanded in Navarro County on May 18, 1865. I am researching my TILBE Family ancestors and my wife's REDDING Family ancestors.
The REDDING family lived in the Somerset County for several generations prior to my wife's family emigrating to the USA and then to Canada. Sharon's Grandfather Harry Hudson Redding and his new bride Mabel DURSTON, also from a long term Somerset Family, emigrated to the USA and settled in Iowa where their only son Herbert Durston Redding was born. Ultimately they moved north to Canada settling in Southern Alberta near Turin, Alberta, Southeast of the city of Lethbridge. Many REDDING and DURSTON families still live in Somerset and many are related.
The TILBÉ family, according to family legend and some family documents, were originally Huguenots, who left France in the late 1500s or early 1600s, at the time of the persecution of the Huguenots, by the "State". Again, according to family legend, two brothers moved to England and settled in Kent County, not too distant from Canterbury. The author's fourth Great Grandfather, Henry TILBÉ was a Fellmonger and landowner living at Westgate, just outside the Canterbury wall. Thomas TILBÉ, one of Henry's sons was Admitted and Sworn to the Liberties and Freedom of the City (of Canterbury) on May 12, 1789 for his service to the City.
