My art is original in concept and creation. I often mix paper-and-pencil techniques with digital techniques, going as far as Adobe photoshop and 3d studio max. Since I don't limit myself to one genre or type of art, I already have enough art to fill any and all categories required and available in Elfwood. Need help with your own work? Email me and i will find time to work with you.

Virginians know that Captain John Smith was one of the first American heroes. But because he was a proud and boastful man, it is difficult to know which parts of his life are fact and which are fiction. What many people may not know is that Smith's adventures started even before Jamestown. Here begins Captain John Smith's American adventures. Apparently restless in England, Smith became actively involved with plans to colonize Virginia for profit by the Virginia Company, which had been granted a charter from King James I. After setting sail on December 20, 1606, this famous expedition finally reached Virginia in April 1607 after enduring a lengthy voyage of over four months in three tiny ships. When the sealed box that listed the names of the seven council members who were to govern the colony was opened, Smith's name was on the list. On May 13, 1607 the settlers landed at Jamestown ready to begin the task of surviving in a new environment. The harsh winter, lack of fresh water, and the spread of disease made life in Jamestown difficult for the settlers. Attacks by the native Algonquian Indians made life almost impossible. The Indians, hoping that the settlers would give up and leave, raided their camps, stealing pistols, gunpowder, and other necessary supplies. John Smith became leader of the colonists and did his best to fight off the Indians.

Captain John Smith
by Dennis Montgomery "An Ambityous unworthy and vayneglorious fellowe" HALFWAY THROUGH the voyage, somewhere in the Canaries, the Jamestown fleet's leaders clapped Captain John Smith into custody and accused him of concealing an intended mutiny. At the next stop, across the Atlantic in the Caribbean, they offered to hang him and got as far as hammering together the gallows. Before his fellow settlers threw him out of Virginia 32 months later, they would again propose to stretch Smith's neck, to banish him, and even to murder him. That is not the Captain John Smith story familiar to the history buff. Even some academic historians prefer to remember the positive elements of the nowpopular captain's career. With some justification. In his 51 years Smith was a compiler and writer of exuberant travelers' tales, an explorer, a mapmaker, a geographer, an ethnographer, a soldier, a governor, a trader, a sailor, an admiral, and the editor of a seaman's handbook. Enormously energetic, his adventures and travels touch Europe, Africa, and America, and match the boldest exploits of fearless knighterrantry. In this hemisphere alone, he was an early explorer not only of the Chesapeake but of New England's coast and, at home in England, an enthusiast in the cause of America's colonization.

HISTORY Captain John Smith Captain John Smith (1580-1631) of Willoughby in Lincolnshire by the young age of 24 years already had served with brilliance in the Dutch
Wars and in the Near East. He escaped his Turkish captors (see his Travels ) and returned to England by 1604. While there, he became interested in the newly chartered Virginia Company and made arrangements to be among the first settlers in 1606.
Due to the Jealousies of the leaders of the first settlers, Smith arrived at Jamestowne in chains. Upon opening the sealed box of instructions from the Virginia Company, Smith learned he was to be a member of the Council of the Colony. His resourcefulness and energies proved more and more valuable to the colonists, until he was singled out as the leader of all at Jamestowne. He explored the territory in and around Chesapeake Bay, traded with the Indians for food, enforced order and work among the settlers, and probably saved Jamestowne Colony from complete extinction. Time proved his firm actions correct. Of the 500 settlers he left at Jamestowne when he returned to England, late in 1609, only 60 settlers were found alive when the new leaders arrived from Bermuda. Having quarreled with the Virginia Company, Smith sailed to New England in 1614 and mapped the coast from Penobscot Bay to Cape Cod. In 1615, he again sailed for New England but was forced by violent storms to return to England. For all his hopes for the Plymouth Company, he never saw America again.

A Brief History of John Smith
Captain John Smith (c1579-1631) led one of the most adventurous and exciting lives of any English explorer. His life began as the son of a farmer, but as a teenager he became a soldier and in 1601 he was captured and sold into slavery by the Turks in Hungary. He eventually managed to escape and returned to England around 1604, when he became involved in the London and Virginia companies. In 1607 he came with the expedition that settled and built Jamestown, Virginia. When the governor of Jamestown was executed for treason in December, 1607, Smith was elected president of the Jamestown Colony. Smith began to organize trade with the Native Americans, and in the process he was captured by chief Powhattan and his life was only spared when Powhattan's daughter Pocahontas pleaded for his life. After being badly burned in 1609, he returned to England and mounted financial support for an expedition to map the coastline of Ameirca. His wish was granted, and he captained an expedition in 1614 which mapped the New England coastline (maps which the Pilgrims would use on their 1620 voyage). Smith returned to England in a small ship, leaving behind Captain Thomas Hunt to continue trade with the Indians at Cape Cod. After Smith left, Hunt captured 24 of the Indiansincluding Tisquantum (Squanto), and sold them in Malaga, Spain. In 1615, Smith would return to New England for more commercial purposes.

, colonizer and publicist. During his two years in America, Smith was principally responsible for the survival of England's first permanent colony in the New World. His bold leadership, military experience, and determination brought a measure of discipline to the dissolute colonists; his negotiations with the Indians prevented starvation; and his dispersal of the colony from unhealthy Jamestown lowered mortality. After his return to England, his promotional writings contributed significantly to English efforts for an American empire. Smith's early career had prepared him for Virginia's challenges. As a teenager he fought in the Low Countries ("that university of warre") and survived several remarkable escapades in western Europe before joining a Christian army fighting the Turks in Hungary. After more improbable episodes, including three victories in duels, he was captured and enslaved. Smith killed his master and then wandered through eastern Europe and sailed briefly to Morocco before returning to England in 1604. His years abroad predisposed him to military solutions.
