Ashes returned to Auburn and buried beside a boulder in oak trees west of the site of the Smith family home in Long Valley, CA. Married: Carolyn Jones Dorman When: November 10, 1954 Awarded: Clark Ashton Smith Probably more down to earth than any of the other great Fantasy writers, Smith was multi-talented, mastered French and Spanish, writing poetry as well as prose, sculpting/carving, and painting. All of his original works were uncast and uncopied, and have become highly collectable. He supported himself through a large variety of mostly laborous professions; such as journalist, cement mixer, hard rock miner, windlasser, typist, gardener, fruitpicker/packer, wood chopper and well digger. While Smith started writing and selling at age 17, he soon dominated the sensational pulps of the 1930s, along with Howard and Lovecraft. Clark's period of high activity spanned only 6 major writing years, 1930 to 36. Five years later, when Smith had moved on to other things, his first major, literary publication came with an anthology of his stories in 1941 for Arkham House called Out of Space and Time , a titled borrowed, with respect, from Poe.

Seine wirkungsvolle, poetische Prosa ist viel imitiert worden. Er schrieb an die hundert Stories für WEIRD TALES, die sich in verschiedenen Zyklen ordnen lassen nach den gemeinsamen Schauplätzen, etwa Hyperborea, Poseidonis, die imaginären mittelalterlichen Länder Malneant und Averoigne. Am umfangreichsten ist der Zyklus um Zothique, einen Superkontinent auf einer Erde der fernen Zukunft. During his lengthy and prolific career, he many volumes of poetry, including The Star-Treader; Odes and Sonnets; Ebony and Crystal; Sandal Wood; Nero and Other Poems (Lakeport, California: The Futile Press, 1937); The Dark Chateau and Other Poems (Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1951); and Spells and Philtres (Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1958). In addition, Smith prepared a volume of his Selected Poems in the late 1940's, although it didn't see publication until some ten years after his death. Ingo Löchel CLARK ASHTON SMITH Clark Ashton Smith wurde am 13.01.1898 in Long Valley, Kalifornien, geboren. Sein Vater Timeus Smith war ein eingewanderter englischer Junggeselle, der 1891 Mary Frances Gaylord heiratete. Timeus war 36 Jahre alt und seine Auserwählte war um 4 Jahre älter als er. Timeus kaufte 1902 ein Grundstück in Indian Ridge und begann ein Blockhaus zu bauen, das 1907 fertig wurde. Zu dieser Zeit hatte Clark Ashton Smith die Grammar School in Auburn beendet. Er hatte die Aufnahmeprüfungen für die High School bestanden, doch er entschied sich nicht mehr zur Schule zu gehen, da er davon überzeugt war, dass er sich selbst besser weiterbilden konnte. C. A. Smith war ein Autodidakt, der höchst eigenwillige Lernmethoden hatte. So las er ein dickes Wörterbuch von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite durch, ferner las er zweimal all die großformatigen und dicken Bände der Encyclopaedia Britannica durch. Später brachte er sich selbst Französisch und Spanisch bei. Für ihn stand sein Beruf bereits fest: er wollte Dichter werden. So verfaßte er Gedichte, aber auch Kurzgeschichten. Es gelang ihm sogar einige seiner Stories zu verkaufen, die simple Abenteuergeschichten waren, die im Orient spielten.
