"When the Rose looked back she saw that Paul Minct had been returned to his seat. He was not dead, but his cold eyes begged for her mercy. The rest of him was expertly snapped here and there. He was little more than a heap of bones but he would live indefinitely. Mr Oakenhurst bowed low before his invisible kin. The voice which came from the folds of drapery behind the table was musical but oddly diffident. 'We shall put those two with the other meat.' There was a long pause, then: 'The broken one is yours, if you wish.'" Michael Moorcock, Blood

Introduction
This is a page dedicated to an exploration of dark literature, covering both recommended reading and selected bibliographies. It is a very idiosyncratic guide, the goal of which is merely to shine a light on some obscure (and not so obscure) gems of dark literature. My definition of Dark Literature covers everything from the early gothics, through the weird literature of the thirties and the middle of this century to the current crop of literature with dark themes, whether it is classed as fantasy, horror or just plain literature. It is very much guided by my reading so any suggestions for further exploration are welcome. I consider Dark Literature to be anything that takes reality (or even a created one) and twists it in unique ways, from the full blown fantastique of Clark Ashton Smith and Michael Moorcock, to the more grounded dark shimmerings of Franz Kafka and Ramsey Campbell; from the sanguine depths of Angela Carter to the dark contemporary horror of Graham Masterton.

Clark Ashton Smith:
The Sorcerer of Auburn Alan Gullette C
Clark Ashton Smith began writing fiction at age eleven, with what he described as "fairy tales" and "long adventure novels" in the manner of The Arabian Nights . Other early influences that have been cited include Thomas Lovell Beddoes' Death's Jest Book , William Beckford's Gothic romance The History of the Caliph Vathek (which Smith read in 1908 and whose syntax and colorful prose will be readily recognized by Smith aficionados) and, of course, Poe, whose poems Smith discovered at age thirteen. One novel, The Black Diamonds , written when Smith was fourteen, has survived along with a small collection of stories that have now been published ( The Sword of Zagan and Other Writings ). But Smith's fantasy stories would have to wait several years to develop; for at thirteen he began to write poetry, and poetry would soon become the first focus of his attention and lead to his first recognition. At fourteen or fifteen, Smith discovered George Sterling, whose fantastic poems in The Testimony of the Suns (1903) and A Wine of Wizardry (1908) introduced what has been called a "cosmic-astronomic" perspective into California Romantic poetry.

The Star-Treader and Other Poems , and had published his strongest collection, The House of Orchids and Other Poems , which delighted Ambrose Bierce, who sadly just missed meeting Smith face-to-face. Sterling introduced Smith to the poetry of Baudelaire at the age of 19, and the San Francisco press 'discover' him as "Boy Poet ... Poetic genius ... Ranking with th Best of Keats and Byron ... New Shelley" and the like. Over three years, he sells more than 1,000 copies of his first book of poems (relatively speaking, a best-seller). From ages 20-28 he suffers poor health, including a nervous breakdown. Bierce dies, too soon to have granted Smith the international attention he intended to provide. His grotesque paintings and drawings are exhibited in New York and on the West Coast, but he gives away far more than he sells. At the age of 27, in just ten days, he writes his greatest long poem, The Hashish-eater; or The Apocalypse of Evil

Where no terrestrial dreams had trod
    My vision entered undismayed
and Life her hidden realms displayed
To me as to a curious god. The Star-Treader Clark Ashton Smith. Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) is best known for his prose poetry and horror/fantasy fiction, and often considered as influential as 'Cthulhu Mythos' architect H.P. Lovecraft and 'Conan' creator Robert E. Howard. Smith's writings were published in over fifty magazines including 'Weird Tales', 'Amazing Stories' and 'Wonder Stories'. Self-taught, Smith also experimented with paintings, drawings, and stone sculptures, which were the focus of his creative impulse from the late 1930s until his death. Although Smith wrote many tales in the Cthulhu Mythos genre popularised by Lovecraft, he also created many memorable settings such as the medieval realms of Averoigne and Malnéant, and the dying civilization Zothique. His hyperborean tales extended the Cthulhu Mythos timescape into new environs for the Old Ones, and many of Smith's creations and genre innovations were utilised by Lovecraft himself. Another key difference to Lovecraft was that Smith's tales featured more prominent female characters. His heroes battled both Romantic and Misanthropic impulses, and were more likely to be thieves or rogue magicians than Lovecraft's cosmic-gazing intrepid adventurers. Consumed by an ever-present fear of death, Smith's characters only won their battles against stronger adversities on few occasions. They capture aspects of the human psyche not readily apparent in modern civilization. The allegation that Smith was just an imitation Lovecraft is blatently false.
