Clark Ashton Smith
Born January 1893 Died August, 1961
Clark Ashton Smith was born on January 13th, 1893, in Long Valley, California. He began to write at the early age of eleven. Smith was largely self-educated, having attended grammar school only until the fifth grade. This is amazing, as his work in verse, prose, painting and sculpture is so outstanding. His short stories are filled with poetic writing and imagery. Obviously his gift for poetry influenced his other work. Whether in poetry or prose, Smith's colorful, baroque pieces relied on irony and the rich fantasy worlds in which his stories breathed life. Smith was selling stories to The Black Cat, The Overland Monthly, and other magazines at the ripe age of seventeen. His first collection of verse was published only two years later, and he was acclaimed as a prodigy. His style of work was said to be equal to Chatterton, Rossetti and Bryant. It was not, however, till Smith was thirty-five that he came into his own, when his short piece "The End of the Story" was included in the publication Weird Tales. This story certainly inspired more tales of the weird, macabre and pseudo-scientific, a genre very popular with readers. Clark was very prolific. His poetry was published in over fifty magazines, including The Yale Reviews, Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, The Philippine Magazine, The London Mercury, Munseys, Asia Wings and The Mencken Smart Set. His poetry has been included in more than a dozen anthologies.

Follow Ups Post Followup WWWBoard: Jack Vance FAQ Posted by Tim Stretton on January 27, 1999 at 07:38:00: I have recently come across the writings of Clark Ashton Smith, who, as far as I can make out, was a US writer of fantasy and horror in the 1940s. His prose style is curious, ornate and compelling, and reminds me in some ways of Vance's. There is a much anthologised short story, "The Weird of Avoosl Wuthqqan" which would not be out of place in "The Dying Earth". Does anyone out there agree with me? And can anyone tell me anything about Clark Ashton Smith? Cheers, Tim.

The Sanctum of Clark Ashton Smith
Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961), perhaps best known today for his association with H.P Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos , is in his own right a unique master of fantasy, horror and science-fiction. While he considered himself primarily a poet, and wrote over 700 poems and prose poems, it is for his short stories that he is best known today. Clark Ashton Smith was also a self-taught artist whose paintings, drawings and sculptures reflect the phantasmagoric worlds of his fiction. "The nostalgia of things unknown, of lands forgotten or unfound, is upon me at times. Often I long for the gleam of yellow suns upon terraces of translucent azure marble, mocking the windless waters of lakes unfathomably calm; for lost, legendary palaces of serpentine, silver and ebony, whose columns are green stalactites; for the pillars of fallen temples, standing in the vast purpureal sunset of a land of lost and marvellous romance. I sigh for the dark-green depths of cedar forests, through whose fantastically woven boughs, one sees at intervals an unknown tropic ocean, like gleams of blue diamond; for isles of palm and coral, that fret an amber morning, somewhere beyond Cathay or Taprobane; for the strange and hidden cities of the desert, with burning brazen domes and slender pinnacles of gold and copper, that pierce a heaven of heated lazuli." Clark Ashton Smith
H ailed as "The New Keats" by the San Francisco press, he drew the serious attention of Ambrose Bierce, George Sterling and Jack London when his first poems were first published in 1911. Despite this early literary success and the fact that he lived a mere hundred miles from the vibrant metropolis, he chose a quiet, solitary life in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. There he would pass his years in relative obscurity, though he gained some small fame as a key contributor to the legendary Weird Tales pulp magazine in the early 1930s. From his cabin on Boulder Ridge, Clark Ashton Smith evoked distant times on earth such as Poseidonis and Hyperborea of the past and Zothique of the far future and conjured up new worlds with a magical melding of science fiction with fantasy and prose with poetry.

[contributed by Chris Jarocha-Ernst] The friendship of Clark Ashton Smith and Howard Phillips Lovecraft began in letters in 1922 and progressed over the years as each became famous to the readers of Weird Tales and other pulps of the 1920s and '30s. It began with Lovecraft, having been shown a few of Smith's poems by another friend, writing to Smith, and it continued up to Lovecraft's death the manuscript of his poem, "To Clark Ashton Smith, Esq., upon His Fantastic Tales, Verses, Pictures, and Sculptures", was found on HPL's desk, apparently the last non-letter item HPL ever wrote. (This is the poem that's also appeared as "To Klarkash-Ton, Lord of Averoigne".) HPL was attracted to CAS's poetic style, transmundane focus, and sardonic wit. CAS liked HPL's sweeping vistas of time and space and his personal philosophy of what's been called "cosmic indifferentism": the belief that humanity is no more significant in the universe than a grain of sand, a blade of grass, or a solar flare. HPL encouraged CAS to try his hand at fiction, and the two were soon passing drafts of stories back and forth for comment. It is not unusual for authors to create a series of tales using the same protagonist, or set in the same fictional land, but it

Clark Ashton Smith
Clark Ashton Smith was a master fantasist whose main body of work was created during his most active period during the 1930's. He began as a poet, and most of the first few entries in his bibliography are collections of poetry, before moving on to writing weird fiction. His short stories are filled with poetic writing and imagery, obviously making use of the talent he had for poetry. His short fiction was inspired by many ways by his friend H. P. Lovecraft, though Smith brought his own unique vision to his work. Colourful, baroque pieces which relied as much on irony as the lushly coloured fantasy worlds in which the stories were played out. His talents weren't limited to poetry and prose, he also tried his hands at other areas of art, including painting, drawing and sculpting. His death in 1961 removed one of Weird Fictions most unique practitioners, no one really matches Smith in the small niche he created for himself, though several have tried. Sadly many of his stories are now out of print, though many are still readily available through second hand dealers.
