    When on some balmy-breathing night of Spring
    The happy child, to whom the world is new
    Pursues the evening moth, of mealy wing,
    Or from the heath-bell beats the sparkling dew;
    He sees before his inexperienc'd eyes The brilliant Glow Worm, like a meteor, shine On the turf bank; amaz'd and pleas'd he cries 'Star of the dewy grass! - I make thee mine!' Then, ere he sleep, collects the moistened flower And bids soft leaves his glittering prize enfold, And dreams that fairy lamps illume his bower. Yet, with the morning, shudders to behold His lucid treasure, rayless as the dust; So turn the World's bright joys, to cold and blank disgust.

    GRAHAM, CHARLOTTE SMITH (1912-1993). Charlotte Smith Graham, dressmaker and labor organizer, was born in Dallas in 1912. One of twelve founders of a Dallas "sewing circle" that affiliated with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union qv in 1935, she remained active in union affairs for more than forty years. During the ILGWU's ten-month 1935 Dallas strike for union recognition, increased wages, and the elimination of workplace abuses like kickbacks to foremen and mandatory work "off the clock," police jailed the recently married Charlotte Duncan fifty-four times. Although she was usually charged with violating court-ordered injunctions that limited the number of pickets in front of Dallas dress factories, Duncan was also jailed for participating in a strike riot on August 7, 1935, during which ten female strikebreakers were attacked and stripped of some or all of their clothing. The Dallas "strike strippers" made the New York Times , and articles and illustrations describing the melee appeared in newspapers in Italy and Australia. Condemned as "unwomanly violence" by Dallas editors, "strike stripping" was a spontaneous demonstration of the dressmakers' anger and frustration after months of employer intransigence. The independence and militancy of Dallas's approximately 150 striking dressmakers shocked many of the city's middle-class residents and even surprised long-time ILGWU organizer Meyer Perlstein, the union's choice to lead the Dallas locals.

    Charlotte Smith, Sonnet XXI, "Supposed to be Written by Werther" (1786)
    Go! cruel tyrant of the human breast
    To other hearts, thy burning arrows bear;
    Go, where fond hope, and fair illusion rest!
    Ah! why should love inhabit with despair!
    Like the poor maniac I linger here,
    Still haunt the scene, where all my treasure lies;
    Still seek for flowers, where only thorns appear,
    "And drink delicious poison from her eyes!"
    Tow'rds the deep gulph that opens on my flight
    I hurry forward, passion's helpless salve!
    And scorning reason's mild and sober light, Pursue the path that leads me to the grave! So round the flame the giddy insect flies, And courts the fatal fire, by which it dies!
    One of many poems written in response to The Sorrows of Young Werther (see also Anna Seward's work ), five such sonnets appear in Smith's Elegiac Sonnets . Most of these poetic reader responses were composed by women (more in England than even in Goethe's Germany). Seen elsewhere in the literature of sensibility, we recognize in this sonnet the madness of the passionate which is accompanied by a complete loss of reason and rationality: in Smith's description, Werther metamorphosizes into an irrational animal a moth which lives solely by its senses. Yet, even as living through the senses and the passions leads to sure poisoning, sure madness and death, there is also a revelling in this state and a need to propagated it through more and more artistic production: Werther, for these female poets, is a tragic hero seeking, rather than "reason's mild and sober light," the grander, fatal flame.

    New Statesman
    August 28, 1998 by Kate Saunders
    Loraine Fletcher Macmillan, 416pp, [pounds]47.50 Most neglected writers have been neglected for perfectly understandable reasons - usually because they are obscure, difficult or just plain boring. Hidden pearls of literature are rarer than the real sort, and this makes Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) all the more remarkable. Here is an 18th-century poet and novelist, whose writing is packed with insight, feeling and wit, and whose influence upon the literature of the following century is almost incalculable. She is familiar to academics, but until now has not been accessible to the general reader. Loraine Fletcher's biography discusses Smith's work in depth, but presents her personal history in such a compelling way that it seems a pity this book is priced for the narrow academic market.

      The Pickering Masters ~ 14 Volume Set General Editor: Stuart Curran
      Volume Editors: Elizabeth Dolan A A Markley D L Macdonald A A Markley Judith Pascoe Judith Phillips Stanton and Kristina Straub
    In recent years the central position held by Charlotte Turner Smith during the formative years of the British Romantic period has become increasingly clear. Although Wordsworth rightly foresaw her status as a poet ‘to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered’, in our time her fortune has turned and her poetry has been restored to the canon where it manifests a range of metrical experimentation and intellectual resilience unmatched by any other woman poet of the time. Less attention has been paid to Smith’s eleven novels and two fictional adaptations from the French because few of these have been reprinted until recently, and the majority have never been reprinted at all. This edition, however, will reveal the extent to which Smith’s work in this form constitutes as significant an achievement as her poetry, representing the turbulent decade of the 1790s on its social and political, as well as literary, planes with an unparalleled richness of detail and an unblinkered vision. Whatever subgenres of the novel Smith engages – gothic, sentimental, domestic, political – she informs with her distinctive social consciousness, which in an increasingly repressive climate is steadfastly liberal and broadly inclusive. In her concentration on the plight of women and of those dispossessed by warfare Smith stakes claims far in advance of her time.
