Smith, Charlotte Turner. Rural Walks, in Dialogues, Intended for the Use of Young Persons. Philadelphia, From the Store of Thomas Stephens, 1795. Charlotte Turner Smith, 1749-1806, was a widely published and read 18th century novelist and poet who also wrote natural history books, often combining moral tales, for young readers. She wrote to support herself and her dependent children after leaving her husband, a director of the East India Company, who had "wild extravagances and [was] feckless in business." Rural Walks was written for 12-13 year old girls at a time when the author also needed funds to assist one of her daughters who was pregnant and unwell. The narrator, Mrs. Woodfield, walks through the country with her daughters and a niece, discoursing on courtesy literature subjects such as humility, charity, fortitude, abuse of riches, and the absurdity of fashion. She ties together women and natural history in order to teach. Back to Home Page Introductory Remarks Table of Contents Bibliography Next Book - Previous Book

Smith, Charlotte Turner. The Poems of Charlotte Smith. Edited by Stuart Curran. NY, Oxford University Press, 1993. Although known primarily for her novels, Charlotte Turner Smith also was a successful poet and natural history writer. Her poems show that she possessed much technical knowledge of botany and have many specifics about plants. It was entirely customary, and very typical, for women writers about the natural world to use the verse form in this period. Back to Home Page Introductory Remarks Table of Contents Bibliography ... The Charlotte M. Smith Collection currently numbers some 4,000 titles. The books are less than 3" tall or wide and most are smaller in both dimensions. Principally collected by Charlotte M. Smith of Newton, Iowa, the books range in date from the 17 th century to the present. The range of subjects is equally broad, but many of the books concern, as well as demonstrate, arts of the book. The collection was exhibited in 1996 and that exhibition has been preserved as virtually as Tiny Tomes . Mrs. Smith also wrote two articles for Books at Iowa The Joys of Miniature Books and The Tamazunchale Press: A Bibliographic Checklist Books in the the Smith Collection will eventually be cataloged and classified in the Libraries' OPAC, InfoHawk, but the website in front of you brings together in preliminary fashion a variety of less formal, existing lists and descriptions. For presentation here, the collection has been sub-divided into United States Miniature Books and Non-United States Miniature Books. The United States titles, in turn, have been divided into pre-Twentieth Century and Twentieth Century imprints. The Twentieth Century books produced by fine and other personal presses and publishers have been organized by press or publisher as described in Robert C. Bradbury's

Huge Vapours Brood above the Clifted Shore
Huge vapours brood above the clifted shore, Night o'er the ocean settles, dark and mute, Save where is heard the repercussive roar Of drowsy billows, on the rugged foot Of rocks remote; or still more distant tone Of seamen, in the anchored bark, that tell The watch relieved; or one deep voice alone, Singing the hour, and bidding "strike the bell." All is black shadow, but the lucid line Marked by the light surf on the level sand, Or where afar, the ship-lights faintly shine Like wandering fairy fires, that oft on land Mislead the pilgrim; such the dubious ray That wavering reason lends, in life's long darkling way.
