About the Exhibition View Exhibition View Descriptive Catalog T iny tomes are, first and foremost, actual books. Even though they are diminutive in size, measuring less than three inches in height, they share the same attributes as their larger or conventionally sized counterparts. They are collections of written or printed pages, which include poetic verses or narrative prose on a variety of topics, and are sewn or bound together in paper, cloth or leather. I nitially, miniature books were produced for practical purposes. Publishers issued miniaturized versions for a wider patronage; their reduced size made them more transportable than contemporary folios. Religious works, then the classics, and children's books were the first to be published. The first printed miniature book on record is an Officium Beatae Virginis Maria x 1 ") printed in 1475, a mere twenty years after the introduction of moveable type. N early four centuries elapsed before the 19th century invention of photolithography revolutionzed the production of minature books. Publications of these diminutive tomes flourished, and the challenge to create even more astonishing examples prevailed. In recent years, miniature book production has equaled, or surpassed, other contemporary literary creations in the artistry of typography, printing and binding. Y et, unaware of the dynamic impact her generous gift would have, in 1996, Charlotte M. Smith from Newton, Iowa, a publisher, author, book collector and founder of the Tamazunchale Press, presented her personal collection of miniature books to the University of Iowa Libraries. Charlotte, an avid "booklover", first began to collect miniature books in 1970 when her ever-growing collection of regular sized rare and antiquarian books overloaded the available shelving.

"Tranquil seclusion I have vainly sought": The Frustrated Landscapes of Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth
The French Revolution began as an upheaval against monarchical abuse of power that was eradicating liberty among the lower and middles classes in France. The Revolution's impact caused not only social rebellion, but also political and literary investigations into natural rights, liberty, and reason. Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth, two poets of the period, were influenced by such queries, and both writers articulated, through poetry, their own responses to the French Revolution. In her poem The Emigrants The Emigrants was published, published Descriptive Sketches , which chronicles his walking tour of the Alps with Robert Jones in 1790. In his poem, Wordsworth also mingles pictures of solitary figures with those of the natural landscape. However, the poems privilege different kinds of landscapes as well contrasting approaches to the Revolution. The natural landscape figures prominently in both Smith's and Wordsworth's poems, but the landscape of solitary exiles dominates The Emigrants , whereas the imaginative landscape permeates Descriptive Sketches. Smith begins in solitary despair and ends with a call for renewed hope through united political reform. Wordsworth, however, progresses from enthusiasm to melancholy in

My argument in this paper is that William Wordsworth's poem "Nutting" is a second-generation rather than a first-generation Romantic work, that it was heavily influenced by a scene from a novel by Charlotte Smith called The Young Philosopher , published in 1798. In order to make this specific argument more credible, I will work my way toward it by discussing another, more widely acknowledged aspect of Smith's influence on Wordsworth: the influence of her blank verse. We shall see that one of English Romanticism's most original psycho-geographical spaces — the hazelnut grove of Wordsworth's "Nutting" — is haunted by earlier visitors and an earlier transgression, and by an anxiety of influence as well as an anxiety of sexuality.
But first some context. This paper was originally written for a BARS conference comemorating Mary Wollstonecraft, whose name reminds us that there is a generation of Romanticism that precedes Wordsworth and Coleridge. Blake, after all, was older than Wordsworth by thirteen years, and began to publish, in his fashion, in 1783. Mary Wollstonecraft published several works in the 1780's, including her first novel, Mary. Charlotte Smith's Elegiac Sonnets appeared in 1784; her first novel in 1788. While she has not been so fully recuperated as Blake and Wollstonecraft, Smith belongs in their company in more than a chronological sense. There are some close social and intellectual connections. Smith and Blake (though not at the same time) had the same patron, William Hayley, and may have met each other through this connection. In a letter Smith refers to Blake as "a Man, who might be anything than an engraver" (McKillop 251). Smith and Wollstonecraft had what was more clearly a mutual admiration: Wollstonecraft anthologized Smith's sonnets in
