Charlotte Turner Smith
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Charlotte Turner Smith ) was an English poet and novelist whose works have been credited with influencing Jane Austen and particularly Charles Dickens . As a poet, she is a Romantic ; as a novelist, she falls into no particular pigeon-hole, but is in some respects Gothic . Smith is also very much interested in social conditions (the influence on Dickens is clear here) and in politics specifically the French Revolution
Biography
Born into a well-to-do family, Charlotte Turner Smith was brought up in South England. At the early age of fourteen, she was married to Benjamin Smith, the son of a wealthy East Indian merchant. However, his wealth did not last and in 1783 Charlotte shared his imprisonment for debts with him for several months. At that time she decided to publish some of her poems to support her ever increasing family. The volume "Elegiac Poems" of 1784 was an instant success. Charlotte put down her thoughts the form of sonnet , a form which since Shakespeare 's days had come out of use. Her poetry, famous for its melancholy and sadness, became highly popular in the following years. "Elegiac Poems" saw several further editions and important Romantic poets such as

had many literary friends and well-wishers, among them Robert Southey , who called her a Living Remarkable a woman of genius, good sense and pleasant manners Wordsworth, Coleridge , and Godwin. She was a major influence on Jane Austen whose early writings are imitations and satires of Smith 's work. Smith began her literary career with a translation of the novel Manon Lescault, which she found in a ruined Normandy chateau where she spent a frigid winter with her husband, after fleeing their English creditors. Later separated, Smith 's long court battle with him to regain some of her children's inheritance, was the inspiration for Dickens ' Jarndyce and Jarndyce court case in Bleak House . This experience and many other difficulties in her life, including debtor's prison, turned her into a political Radical, critical of the courts, marriage laws, and the class system, as well as of slavery and the war against the American colonists, issues she explores in her novels.

Written near a Port on a Dark Evening
Huge vapours brood above the clifted shore,
Night on the ocean settles dark and mute,
Save where is heard the repercussive roar
Of drowsy billows on the rugged foot
Of rocks remote; or still more distant tone
Of seamen in the anchored bark that tell
The watch relieved; or one deep voice alone
Singing the hour, and bidding "Strike the bell!"
All is black shadow but the lucid line
Marked by the light surf on the level sand,
Or where afar the ship-lights faintly shine
Like wandering fairy fires, that oft on land
Misled the pilgrimsuch the dubious ray
That wavering reason lends in life's long darkling way.
Retirement
He may be envied who with tranquil breast
Can wander in the wild and woodland scene,
When summer's glowing hands have newly dressed
The shadowy forests and the copses green;
Who unpursued by care can pass his hours
Where briony and woodbine fringe the trees,
On thymy banks reposing, while the bees

Smith, Charlotte (Turner)
4 May 1749 - 28 October 1806
British poet and novelist who never wrote a "Gothic" work. So what's she doing here? Simple: she helped invent the Gothic, in large part due to the influence of her works on Ann Radcliffe . (She also helped invent Romanticism and William Wordsworth
There are "Gothic" elements in only a few of Smith's early works, for by her own admission she was uninterested in literary sensationalism and in the supernatural; adverse financial circumstances (a profligate and irresponsible husband, largely) led her to novel-writing in the first place (she preferred poetry), and the success of her first novel, Emmeline (1788), showed her that sales could be positively affected by the inclusion of the sorts of dramatic scenes she was writing. But her own interest in political and social issues, heightened by her first-hand experience with the early moments of the French Revolution, led her away from even the quasi-Gothic traces in her first three novels ( Emmeline: The Orphan of the Castle Ethelinde, the Recluse of the Lake

The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith:
Plurality of Vision
According to some critics, Charlotte Turner Smith, (1749-1806), "was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic" (Curran, Intro, The Poems of Charlotte Smith ). The first edition of her Elegiac Sonnets , written in 1783 while she was in debtor's prison with her husband and children, brought her sudden fame. Her most direct beneficiary among the canonical male poets was William Wordsworth who says in an essay that Smith was a poet "to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered" ( The Prose Works of William Wordsworth: Critical and Ethical , Vo III). Smith, as with many other women writers of the period, was largely forgotten by the second half of the nineteenth century. My paper, "The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith: Plurality of Vision," is not only an exploration of her aesthetics and politics, but also an effort to begin to begin the process of remembering. Charlotte Turner Smith embodies oppositions through the blurring of boundaries between disparate forces. But the harmony that Smith represents does not obliterate differences; rather, her inclination is to accomodate a multiplicity of positions at once. As Smith opens her text to opposing voices, she melds the dualities of the inner and the outer, the private and the socio- political, the material and the spiritual to form an organic whole that suggests connections and possibly the reconciliation of opposites. In my paper, I will discuss Smith's poetics in terms of her attempt to reconcile conflict by asserting the necessity of connection in two of her works
