From Adam Smith to Open Source
By Sean Michael Kerner

TORONTO In 1776, the British economist Adam Smith theorized in "The Wealth of Nations" that "invisible hand" market forces are the primary influences in a free market economy. Does the economic model of the world, as predicted by Smith over 228 years ago, apply to the modern concept of free and open source software? For theorists and tech luminaries gathered at the Open Source and Free Software conference held at the University of Toronto this week, that was an open question as they debated concepts and controversies with the growth of open source software.

One of his most remarkable inventions, patented in 1780, was the letter-copying press, for copying manuscripts by using glutinous ink and pressing the written page against a moistened sheet of thin paper. It remained the most important method of copying letters until the advent of the typewriter in the late 19th century. Adam Smith wrote to his publisher William Strahan in October 1780 "I am a subscriber for Watts copying machine. The price is six Guineas for the machine and five shillings for the packing box; I should be glad if he would send me a ream of the copying Paper, together with all the other specimens of Ink etc which commonly accompany the machine..."

SMITH, Adam Essays on Philosophical Subjects. To which is prefixed An Account of the Life and Writings of the Author; by Dugald Stewart, F.R.S.E. London, T.Cadell Jun and W.Davies 1795 Quarto, 19th century green cloth boards, spine lettered gilt, xcvpp + 244pp, a very large copy. First edition. Adam Smith was supported in his declining years by two old friends in particular: the distinguished scientists Joseph Black and James Hutton. It was they who superintended, at Smith's request, the destruction of all his papers except the few he judged to be in a sufficiently finished state to deserve publication. Black and Hutton were his literary executors, and published the literary fragments which had been spared the flames under their editorship as Essays on Philosophical Subjects in 1795. The essays include "The History of Astronomy", "The External Senses" and "On the affinity between Music, Dancing and Poetry" and prefixed at the beginning Dugald Stewart's An Account of the life and Writing of the Author which is the first biography of Adam Smith.

The book, The Salmon of Doubt , is a collection of stories, interviews, and columns pieced together from Adams's own computer and writings by an editor, his wife - writer Jane Belson Adams, and Adams's friends and assistants. "Salmon of Doubt" is also the title of the story Adams was in the middle of writing - when he had his heart attack. It looked to be the third Dirk Gently story. However, in the opening introduction, Christopher Cerf, co-creator of the PBS reading show "Between the Lions," speculates something else. " Would it have remained a Dirk Gently book, or would he instead have transformed it - as he hinted he might - into the sixth and final volume in the Hitchhiker trilogy?"

One of the principal effects of the Act is to make it a criminal offence to engage in the activity of mounted foxhunting with dogs, or to permit land or dogs to be used for this activity. By section 12(2) of the Act the preceding sections are to come into force on such day as the Scottish Ministers may by order made by statutory instrument appoint. By the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Act 2002 (Commencement) Order 2002 ("the Commencement Order"), made by the Scottish Ministers in the exercise of these powers, the day appointed for the coming into force of the Act is 1 August 2002. et separatim certain provisions of it are, incompatible with Articles 8 and/or 14 of, and/or Article 1 of the First Protocol to, the European Convention on Human Rights ("the Convention"). They aver that on those grounds the Act is outside the legislative competence of the Scottish Parliament. They further aver
