Ok, it's not what you're thinking. Yeah, I know the inside cover says "hard sci-fi" but it's not a scary hard read, I promise. So there's these microbes which have a symbiotic relationship with people. And you can get them, if you can deal with all the chatter inside your head. See, cause the microbes are people and each set has it's own political system and even nightclubs and booze and they have personalities. And they think you're god! Since one of your days is an entire generation to them. Pretty cool. But there are evil microbes floating around too which can turn you into a vampire. Suck. Chrisoberyl decides to let the microbes grow inside her head, to help her art. Which they do, provided she allow political prisoners to reside in her head too. This decision sweeps her into galactic intrigue. It's amazing how tiny things can end up in galactic intrigue. Probably people that actually go looking for intrigue never find it. And she has one of those love interests where you're just going, "Come on ! He totally likes you. Send him one of those 'do-you-like-me-circle-yes-or-no' notes from fifth grade." Or maybe that's just me. Her microbes like to party down and give her no end of trouble. The problem is, if the little bacteria decide to drug you (like the evil ones do), you could end up with a head full of dopamine which pretty much translates to liquid crack. You're not good for much afterwards. And the evil germs have this Slave World that they're kidnapping their crack-heads to, which the Elves (yes, the

    What's up with that?
UNI is, on the surface, a free and even somewhat hedonistic society, but as time goes on it becomes apparent that it has its own ways of achieving the cheerful conformity it expects of its citizens. Some of the Foxfielders are willing to make that tradeoff; others aren't so sure.
    Who is this writer?
She is an accomplished scientist (her doctoral thesis at Yale concerned the structure of bacterial flagellar propellers, which is good enough for me); this background shows up in the aboriginal residents of Foxfield, the Commensals, who are among the more finely detailed alien species I've seen in science fiction. She's currently teaching at Kenyon, where she keeps this home page (Clicking this link will, or should, open a new browser window.)
Who does this writer remind me of?
This is an unusual science fiction book in that the avoidance of conflict takes precedence over battle, so comparisons are limited. I must say that the writing is not distinguished; much of the activity, especially in the first half, is "talked" rather than "done," and the dialogue and characterization are definitely secondary to the theme.
Could this writer offend delicate sensibilities?

    WisCon
WisCon is an annual gathering of feminist science fiction writers and readers held in Madison, Wisconsin. I have attended WisCon for the past eight years. It is a great experience for anyone interested in science fiction, feminist or not. Many successful and long published authors in the genre attend regularly as well as new authors, publishers, agents, and editors. Guests in the past have included: Ursula LeGuin, Mary Doria Russell, Sheri Tepper, Charles deLint, Octavia Butler, and many many more. As a writer and (sometimes) a guffawing fanboy, it's a great experience to be able to talk one on one with these writers as well as the other readers. WisCon is also responsible for the birth of the James Tiptree Award , given annually to a work of science fiction that deals with gender issues. The Award is funded in large part by bake sales! This year's Tiptree winner was Molly Gloss for her novel Wild Life Most importantly, I leave WisCon each year with a huge list of authors and titles to add to my MUST READ pile! Below, you'll find my book list from WisCon 25.

    http://www.rastus.force9.co.uk/FHBR99.html
    Joan Slonczewski : Brain Plague
    (Tor Books h/back, August 2000, 384pp, $24.95)
Brain Plague is one of those curiously infuriating books which operate from a basic premise that has you constantly saying "I don't believe this" right the way through, and yet still manages to amuse and even impress with some quality storytelling. Joan Slonczewski seems to have a talent for writing good characters, and of spinning a good yarn around them. However, with Brain Plagu e, I was put off by the central premise of the book, that a race of intelligent microbes could be introduced into the human brain and happily co-exist there. Nothing terribly original or surprising there, of course, as anyone remembering Greg Bear's early work Blood Music will recall. But Bear's microbial intelligence came from the collective, not the individual. Where Slonczewski differs is in giving each microbe its own little personality, in endowing the bugs with individual personhood, if you like. Makes for a different kind of storyline, for sure, as though the main protagonist has a million voices in her head, all giving her advice. When the microbes not only behave as tiny, fast-living humans (even down to setting up schools and nightclubs in the heroine's brain), but positively demand to have the same rights as humans, then the faintest suspicion is raised that Slonczewski may have pushed her idea just beyond the outrageous and well into the unbelievable range. Where Bear managed to raise an awful possibility from irresponsible tampering in microbial biology, Slonczewski tries to convince us that it could all be jolly good fun really. Sorry, I'm not buying it. Personally, I have enough trouble with just the one voice in my head, let alone a whole host of others. The story is well enough told, but falls at the first in the credibility stakes.

Joan Slonczewski (geb. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

    http://www.rambles.net/slonczewski_children.html
    Joan Slonczewski,
    The Children Star
    (Tor, 1999)
Joan Slonczewski, in the The Children Star , has written a hard SF novel set far in the future, when humans are practically immortal. (The highest political official of the civilization, Verid Anaea shon , has lived, and has had the same lover, for more than a millennium.) Human/ape hybrids ("simians") and sentient machines are commonplace. However, while good science-fictional ideas abound, there remains to the novel an overall emotional and intellectual flatness. One of the main protagonists is a religious monk, Rod, who, as part of his dedication to the call of the Spirit, embraces the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Rod aspires to live a moral and ethical life amid a society that struggles (like all societies) to balance the power and aggrandisement of the few against the freedom and dignity of the many. This balance has swung in favour of the few in the case of "sentients" factory-made machines that have achieved consciousness. The novel describes the similar political/legal battle that must now be fought in establishing the ethical basis of society's responsibility towards alien ecologies. The battleground is a planet, Prokaryon, the planet upon which Rod and co-religionists struggle to maintain an orphanage.
