"The Kin-dom of God" in Joan Slonczewski's Novels

Although unaware of its influence, I'm sure that feminist science fiction was an important factor as I turned away from competitive involvement in university administration and toward concern for my spiritual well-being as well as that of other upper middle-class Euro-Americans similarly caught up in the myths of our culture. This concern led me to read feminist theology as I study for a master of divinity degree and possible ordination as a Unitarian Universalist minister. Imagine my delight upon discovering that Slonczewski's four novels, Still Forms on Foxfield, A Door into Ocean, The Wall around Eden, and Daughter of Elysium embody many of the theological concepts advanced by the feminist theologians I have been reading. Central to these concepts is what Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz calls "the kin-dom of God ." She replaces the Bible's eschatological goal, "the kingdom of God," with a new one, "the kin-dom of God," explaining that she rejects the word kingdom for two reasons. "First, it is obviously a sexist word that presumes that God is male. Second, the concept of kingdom in our world today is both hierarchal and elitist" (304). "The word

Definition, Bedeutung, Erkl¤rung im Lexikon
Joan Slonczewski (geb.

No duplication without express written permission. Interview: Joan Slonczewski by John C. Snider Science fiction has long been famous for authors who are outspoken, outrageous, even annoying characters (witness Harlan Ellison and the late Isaac Asimov). But as the old saying goes, it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. For twenty years, Joan Slonczewski (pronounced "slonZOOski") has been quietly building a solid body of top-notch science fiction. Drawing upon her Quaker background and her career as a molecular biologist, Dr. Slonczewski has written a string of books that are as notable for their humanity as they are for their complex and intriguing scientific ideas. Joan's new book Brain Plague will be published in August 2000, and it promises to continue the tradition. What if a society of intelligent microbes could inhabit a human brain? What if they could enhance our capabilities, or manipulate us for their own purposes? Would you accept their offer? www.scifidimensions.com Latest News Commentary Letters to the Editor ... Atlanta SF Calendar Institutional Member of SFWA All original content is John C. Snider unless otherwise indicated. No duplication without express written permission. Book Review: Brain Plague by Joan Slonczewski Tor Books, August 2000 Review by John C. Snider What if there were intelligent microbes? What if they could communicate with us? What if they could inhabit the human brain and offer to enhance our mental capacity? Would you accept the offer? Once accepted, what could keep the microbes from doing with you as they please? These are the complex and puzzling issues raised in Joan Slonczewski's latest novel Brain Plague . In the far future, humanity has spread throughout the galaxy. In addition to normal humans, there are "elves" (genetically engineered near-immortals), simians (human/ape hybrids), sentients (artificial intelligences), and a variety of other creatures (including organic, self-aware buildings who negotiate rental agreements with their tenants). Despite the advances of technology, all is not well in the universe. Humans still suffer addictions and homelessness. Violence still occurs all too often. And in the background, a terrible plague has been raging through space - a "brain plague" in which intelligent "micros" invade human hosts and turn them into slaves. But just like human beings, there are good micros and bad ones. The good ones are part of a carefully monitored program in which human hosts are matched with colonies of microbes. The resulting symbiotic relationship provides the microbes with an ideal living environment (and a "god" to worship); it provides the host with the equivalent of a million microscopic parallel processors to apply to any task he or she might imagine.

Interview with Joan Slonczewski
CD: What inspired you to write, and how did you get started writing? JS: I have always written in response to deep feelings about where the world is headed. "The world" might be events in my family, or the state of our planet; usually both. My early books, Still Forms on Foxfield A Door into Ocean , and The Wall Around Eden , were compelled by the specter of nuclear war, as well as by my need to communicate some of the wonderful possibilities for overcoming this threat, through the human possibilities for "active peace." When I wrote A Door into Ocean , I really wanted to write about how the countries of Eastern Europe could free themselves from Soviet domination. But at the time, given the horrific political climate in this country, I felt no publisher would print it. Later, I received postcards from Czech students who found A Door into Ocean inspiring in their quest for freedom. In Daughter of Elysium , you can see my concerns moving more toward the long-term, creeping dangers to our world, particularly the tragic loss of so many of our living ecosystems. But I never show easy answers. Nearly all the characters in this book think they are good environmentalists; yet each of their views are deficient in some way.
