John Skelton
Although it is not known where he studied, John Skelton had the title of laureate conferred on him by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Louvain and he was appointed court poet to Henry VII in 1489. He became tutor to the five year old Prince Henry (Henry VIII) in 1496 and was ordained as a priest two years later. In 1503 he became the rector of Diss in Norfolk, holding this post until his death. His poetical works were largely satirical and include The Bowge of Court , the egotistical The Garlande of Laurell Phylyp Sparowe Colyn Cloute Speke Parrot , and Why Come Ye Not to Courte . He also wrote a play, Magnyfycence (1516), a thinly veiled allegory on the sycophancy of King Henry VIII's court. To Mistress Margaret Hussey

John Skelton
Information on his life is sketchy at best. His dates of birth and death are not known, though we know he was born in the early 1460s, to a family originally from Yorkshire, England.
He entered Cambridge, then transferred to Oxford. Somewhere between 1488 and 1490 he received a post graduate degree in rhetoric, which in those days granted him the title "poet laureate." The University of Louvain granted him the same title in 1492, and Cambridge awarded him laureation in 1492 or 1493.
Already a famous rhetorician and translator, he joined the court of Henry VII in 1488. The first surviving work we know he wrote is Elegy on the Death of the Earl of Northumberland , in 1489. From 1496 to 1501 he tutored the future King Henry VIII. In 1501 he wrote Speculum Principis . He wrote many like it, but they were lost.
In 1498 he moved through the ranks in the Abbey of St. Mary Grace, from subdeacon to deacon to priest, then wrote The Bowge of Courte , which translates to "The Rewards of Court." Wynken de Word published this satire on courtly politics in 1499. A couple years later Skelton was sentenced to a brief stay in debtor's prison.

John Skelton - Godfather of Rap Ample proof that rap has been around for 500 years John Skelton lived from the 1460s until 1529. He came after Geoffrey Chaucer and Sir Thomas Mallory. He preceded Spenser and Shakespeare. He was a young man when Mallory's "Le Mort d'Arthur" was published, and he was old when Sir Thomas More's "Utopia" came out. Like most rap artists, John Skelton did not have a glamorous background . Nothing is known about him prior to when he began studying at Oxford University in the early 1480's. There he was awarded the title "poet laureate", which would be the equivalent of a modern day doctorate of poetry. He soon became famous for his rhetoric, his satiric flair and his translations. In 1488 he joined the court of Henry VII, and was the official royal poet for most of the next 40 years. Skelton tutored the young Prince Henry (who went on to be Henry VIII) for 5 years. His job was to teach him the performing arts, but one wonders what else he may have taught him.
