Charles Simic
In the poem "Cabbage", Simic conceits a head of cabbage to the narrator's love for a woman. This is much like John Donne's work, "The Flea", where a woman is about to kill a flea, which parallels Simic's "Cabbage" since the woman is about to chop the head of cabbage in half (Miller). Much like in Donne's poem, where the mistress's nail is "purpled" (Donne) by the flea, the mistress in "Cabbage" cuts the cabbage in two with a single stroke of her knife symbolizing the dissolving of their love (Miller). The mistress does not hesitate to cut it, which would imply that she didn't love him in return since he was merely trying to seduce her.
In another of Simic's works, "Filthy Landscape", he creates a scene of wildflowers on a meadow and describes it as being "half undressed…scandalous…and a debauchery" (Simic, Filthy). His usage of these descriptive, thought-provoking words describes his feelings about the landscape by making a lewd-sounding imagine in the reader's mind. The images the reader can see in this work deal mainly with visuals of things related to "debauchery" even though they are things of nature. The images within this work create a different outlook on nature that many people would never visualize.
In Charles Simic's poems he uses everyday words and objects to convey his intentions and his mood. One critic describes Simic's work as being "simple and expressive" (Carruth) with the language he chooses. The sensation a reader feels from his poems "corresponds to the reader's emotions and deepens our relation to the world" that Simic creates (Atlas). For example, in the aforementioned poem "Filthy Landscape", Simic creates the scene of nature in it's "immorality" by using words that suggest sexual and risqué elements. Such words as "lurid", "drunk", "half-undressed", "foulmouthed", and "smutty" are very clear within a reader's mind as to their meaning and Simic's intentions.

Defence of Poetry 1997:
Charles Simic
The Confession of the 2000 Year Old Poet
Charles Simic Poetry is best when it finds itself at the heart of human comedy, claims Charles Simic’s 2000 year old poet. "There’s no more reliable reporter of what it means to be stuck in this eternal can of worms." for M.B. and D.K. When I was still a snot-nosed kid, my name was Ovid, Horace, Catallus, Sextus Propertius and Martial. My specialty was mixing the serious with the trivial, the frivolous with the high-minded. I was a holy terror. I wrote lines like these: When she’s on her chaise-long, make haste to find a footstool For those dainty feet of hers, help her on and off With the slippers or: Whoever hopes to count The love-games of your bed Might as well list the stars Glittering overhead or every grain of sand In Africa’s desert land.
