    A Note on Charles Simic
Charles Simic was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on May 9th 1938. As a boy, he received 'a typical East European education', an education, that's to say, at the hands of Hitler and then Stalin. In 1953, however, Simic left Yugoslavia, and, after some months in Paris, went with his mother and brother to the United States, where his father had been working for the previous six years. After a year in New York, the family moved to Chicago, where Simic attended Ernest Hemingway's alma mater, Oak Park High School. Then, in 1958, Simic returned to New York, working during the day to put himself through the school he attended at night. A year later, the poetry he had begun to write while still in Chicago first found its way into print, appearing in the winter issue of The Chicago Review Simic spent two years in the army, a period notable chiefly for the fact that it obliged him to reconsider the character of his writing, and caused him to destroy all of his early poems, which he'd come to feel were 'no more than literary vomit'. In 1966, Simic graduated from New York University, and the year after that

IN THE VILLAGE OF MY ANCESTORS
    Someone embraces me
Someone looks at me with the eyes of a wolf
    Someone takes off his hat
So I can see him better Everyone asks me
Do you know how I'm related to you Unknown old men and women
    Appropriate the names
Of young men and women from my memory I ask one of them Tell me for God's sake Is George the Wolf still living That's me he answers With a voice from the next world I touch his cheek with my hand And beg him with my eyes To tell me if I'm living too Vasko Popa translated by Charles Simic Home Featured Books Poetry Prize Poetry Series ... A selection by Serbian poet Novica Tadic in English translation by charles simic.
    http://www.oberlin.edu/~ocpress/TranslationSeries/Tadic.html
    Novica Tadic: NIGHT MAIL
    (translated by Charles Simic)
"Bruno Schulz said: 'The sublime nature of the divine order...can be rendered only by the power of human negation.' He was speaking of Kafka's feel for the boundaries of the human and the divine. Tadic has the same feel. He composes anti-poems, anti-psalms, anti-prayers. Such complexity in poems that are almost exclusively very short! In my view, he is one of the most original and interesting poets today." Charles Simic "Oscillating between traditional and modern, realistic and fantastic, evil and good, Tadic weaves poetry whose images are visible and abstract. A labyrinth of masterful short poems."
