21. "Reflections: The Conquest Of Space" By Robert Silverberg
SF author robert silverberg reflects on the Columbia shuttle disaster.

Stories from Asimov's have won 40 Hugos and 24 Nebula Awards, and our editors have received 17 Hugo Awards for Best Editor. Asimov's was also the 2001 recipient of the Locus Award for Best Magazine. Current issue also available in
various electronic formats at
Reflections: The Conquest of Space by Robert Silverberg The most profound short-range effect, surely, will be on the astronaut program. Even today, barely forty-eight hours after the shuttle exploded over Texas, the lead article in the Wall Street Journal bears the headline, "Shuttle Crash Raises Questions About Future of Manned Flights," and begins, "Why is America still sending men and women into space?" Journal ’s question, "Why?" is a simple "Why not?" A NASA flight controller quoted by the Journal gives a somewhat more elaborate answer: "The human race has been about exploration since it crawled out of the swamps on four legs. If you’re not exploring, you’re dying." Times declares that the best possible outcome of the disaster would be the scrapping of the manned space program and the shifting of the billions of dollars thus saved to improving the science programs in our public schools. The best I can do in dealing with such remarks is to refer the anti-space people to the remarks of the NASA controller I quote above, and let them try to refute them. School science programs would not be well served by a curtailment of such a dramatic form of scientific research as the exploration of space.)

ISBN: 0-575-07501-58 check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk A modern-day man called Clay arrives in the distant future by means of the time-flux and finds himself in the company of the descendants of Man. The first group of these live an idyllic existence, mixing and having sex while maintaining their world. There are also a variety of other beings around who also can put claim to being the future and recent past of Man, often drawn into its barbarity or just lounging around in the water. Nothing is known about Man’s current history and Clay doesn’t dwell much on that after a while as between sexual episodes, he wants to understand what he sees about him. This is hardly standard SF fare as it is more a debate of what makes a human human. No doubt there is a lot of deep metaphor that will keep a lot of you discussing for hours. Silverberg kept the story very much in Clay’s eyes and observation.

A book without chapters is also one that is going to take some determining when to take a natural break. The latter wasn't helped when I though Silverberg had gotten into a fantasy quest style novel instead of his usual SF. Actually, this is SF. You're just thrown in at the deep end and have to go a little way in before you get the details about the background of the story. Mankind arrives on a planet a thousand years ago and through one means or another, indoctrinates the native population to do their menial or labour tasks for them. In the current time, they eventually rebel and kill the humans in the northern continent. A visiting adolescent human from the south, Joseph Master Keilloran, is helped to escape the carnage and we follow his journey home as he attempts to avoid the rebels and other dangers alike.

T his book envisages a Roman Empire that never fell and explores over fifteen hundred years of Roman history through the stories of eleven people who lived it.
Power in this empire flows between the twin capitals in Rome and Constantinopolis. Many of the stories centre on the rivalries and intrigues that this twin capital system generates, told from the point of view of various officials or aristocrats of the Roman Empire.
This book isn't really a novel. The stories have nothing tying them together beyond the fact they are all set in this alternate Roman Empire. There are no family dynasties to follow or central storyline described from different positions in society; just a lot of random individuals, none of whom really overlap.
The book feels much more like a short story collection rather than a novel and suffers from the same trouble a lot of short stories have: You're not with each character long enough to develop any particular empathy with them.

pub: Gollancz. 213 page enlarged paperback. Price: £ 6.99 (UK). ISBN: 0-575-07523-6. check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk H olman's Planet, now called Belzagor, has been returned to its native sentient species after it was discovered that despite their jungle surroundings and they looked liked four tusked elephants that they had an elaborate civilisation. It is to this world that its previous administrator, Gundersen, returns to redeem himself for some of the things he did to the pachyderm Nildoror and a bi-pedal sub-species called the Sulidoror by visiting their mist country. He also has to make a promise to return a missing human, Cedric Cullen, who the Nildoror consider a criminal. In many respects, this is a quest plot but told with such exceptional detail that you'd probably be sweating alongside Gundersen if you read this book in the middle of summer. Oddly enough, the puzzle answer presented at the end wasn't that obvious until towards the end although the clues were laid out along the route as the ex-administrator meets people who stayed behind after everyone else had left.
