The Dr. Joshua Lathrop House c
Norwichtown, Connecticut

By Suzanne Harle Built in 1763 by Dr. Joshua Lathrop, this home has been restored to its original condition which includes a nine foot cooking fireplace, a smoking chamber in the attic, and a cold storage chamber in the cellar.
One malignant epidemic occured in 1749, which spurred the Rev. Leavenworth of Waterbury to travel on horseback to the Lathrops to obtain some medicine for his suffering people. No drug store in his area towns existed, so the Rev. made the return journey to Norwich in 3 days. Benedict Arnold apprenticed to the Lathrops, according to Mrs Lydia Huntley Sigourney's Letters of Life, the Lathops looked kindly upon their apprectices, receiving them into their own family, and educating them to become useful members of society. Their efforts were wasted on young Benedict. He abused the cats, dogs and horses, dismembered the birds, and stole and crushed their eggs. When sent to the mill for some Indian corn, Arnold would frighten the miller by clinging to the spokes of the revolving wheel, at one time submerging, then again flying through the air, while the miller called him "an imp of the Evil One!" Mrs. Sigourney recalled of Dr. Joshua Lathrop, "his small, well-knit, perfectly erect form, his mild benevolent brow, surmounted by the large round white wig, with its depth of curls, the three-cornered smartly cocked hat, the nicely plaited stock, the rich silver buckles at knee and shoe, the long waistcoat, and fair ruffles over hand and bosom, which marked the gentleman of the old school."

MURALS HISTORY HOME History of Keokuk County Keokuk County Courthouse at Night
Keokuk is named after a famous Sac Indian Chief. The name means "Watchful Fox" or "He Who Has Been Everywhere". Chief Keokuk advocated peace with the white settlers. Indians that dwelt in this area were the Sac and Fox tribes. Keokuk County was opened up for settlement in May 1843 and the organization of Keokuk County began in 1844. Before this time the county was attached to Washington County. The location of the county seat of justice was a source of controversy. The southeastern portion of the county was the first to be settled so the people there felt that the county seat should be located in the center of the population distribution rather than in the geographical center. The debate over the county seat location continued throughout the years. After lengthy discussions the commissioners moved the official location of the county seat to the town of Sigourney in 1856. Sigourney was named after the author and poet Lydia Huntley Sigourney. She showed her appreciation by providing the trees which were planted on the courthouse grounds, and presenting fifty volumes to the town library. First School of Keokuk County The first school of the county was taught in a schoolhouse constructed of logs, about 3 1/2 miles northeast of Richland. It was in 1842 and was taught by James McKinney. Richland Township also boasts of having possessed the only successful academy of the county. It was located in the town of Richland and was attended by pupils from all parts of the county. At one time it had in attendance over 200.

HOME About the Longfellow Project
The Longfellow Project
The Andrew and Frances Hilen Nineteenth-Century Americana Collection
The Andrew and Frances Hilen Nineteenth-Century Americana Collection began in 1964 with the first of many gifts by Andrew Hilen of important first and lifetime editions, photographs and drawings and facsimile and original letters of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A professor of English at the University of Washington from 1945 to 19, Andrew Hilen specialized in nineteenth century American literature. He edited the definitive six volume work, The Letters of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Harvard UP) , which began publication in 1967 and finished in 1982. As Professor Hilen worked on a segment of Longfellow's life, he collected books and other materials to support his research. As he finished a volume, he kindly donated the materials he had gathered to the Special Collections, Manuscripts and University Archives Division. In 1975, with the addition of financial support, the Collection broadened to include a dozen significant nineteenth-century American literary figures. Besides Longfellow, the authors featured in the Collection at that point were Nathaniel Hawthorne, Lydia Huntley Sigourney, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry James, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, Lydia Maria Child, Henry David Thoreau and Kate Chopin. Since 1980, the Collection has been supported by a generous Endowment which has allowed a further expansion of the scope of the Collection. Substantial acquisitions in the last twenty years have meant some of the original dozen writers have nearly complete collections now. The Collection currently focuses on American writers of fiction, poetry and essays in the nineteenth century using as a guide the

The bridal images provide an intriguing complication of the dominant gender ideology. If one assumes a male reader/viewer, these images clearly display genteel womanhood as erotic commodity. However, if one assumes a female reader/viewer, the representation of genteel womanhood becomes more complicated. Textual codes at times uphold, at times undermine, visual codes, as text competes with image in these engravings. The visual codes of genteel portraiture clearly mark these images. As Laura Prieto has noted in her analysis of a self-portrait by Sarah Miriam Peale: a lacy ruffled dress, an elongated neck, delicate curls and sweet facial features are all markers of genteel womanhood. These bridal images clearly display these visual codes. Indeed, were these engravings not presented as idealized, and at times, allegorized images of womanhood, one might mistake them for portraits of actual brides-to-be, copied from paintings or daguerrotypes. This style of female portraiture can be found in the work of Charles Cromwell Ingham, Washington Allston (Ingham’s pupil), Samuel F. B. Morse (inventor of the telegraph) and Cephas Giovanni Thompson, all painting at mid-century. Morse’s painting of his daughter, Susan Walker Morse, alternately titled by her name and by the clearly-allegorical moniker “The Muse,” is perhaps the best-known example of this style.
