He was of the opinion that Vickers, his employer at the time, "would probably take a poor view of an employee who wrote novels on the side". His wide experience with aircraft included working as the "Chief Calculator" for the R100, one of two competing airship projects in Britain in the late 1920s. In today's computer age, it is hard to imagine a time when teams of people were employed to perform complex calculations! The R100 was built by a private enterprise team, competing with the government R101 team. This program ended with the crash of the R101 in October 1930, with the loss of 48 of the 54 on board. The R100 team was headed up by Barnes Wallis, later the designer of the "Dambuster" bombs. Perhaps less well known is the fact that much later Wallis was also the designer of the Parkes radio telescope in NSW; still one of the world's leading astronomical observatories.

The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I n 1938, the English engineer Nevil Norway was eased out of the company he'd formed, Airspeed Ltd.. In his autobiography of that part of his life, Norway says it was probably time to move on. Two kinds of people shape companies, he says: Starters and Runners. He'd done a fine creative job starting the company, but he wasn't suited to running it day by day. So Norway quit making planes for Douglas, Fokker and others. As war threatened, he turned to what'd been his hobby since 1928. He'd been writing books and stories. One story had even been made into a movie. He hadn't wanted the engineers he worked with to think he was frivolous, so he'd written under his Christian names, Nevil Shute. Bibliographies index Biographical note on Nevil Shute Nevil Shute Norway was born 17th January 1899 at Ealing, London, the youngest of two brothers and the son of a senior civil servant in the General Post Office. At an early stage it was obvious that his interests lay not in things academic as did his brother's but in things practical, having been caught playing truant from school only to spend his time studying the mechanical exhibits and early flying machines in the Science Museum in South Kensington. The family moved from London to Dublin in 1912 when his father was appointed Secretary to the Post Office in Ireland. Nevil Shute had attended various schools in England including Shrewsbury and it was whilst on holiday from there that he was in Dublin during the Easter uprising in 1916, and acted as a stretcher bearer. In June, 1915, his older brother Fred had died of wounds in Flanders during WW1. He was quite philosophic about his future at this stage having seen his numerous seniors at school killed in the fighting in Flanders as well as his brother. His stammer, from which he was to suffer to some extent throughout his life, probably saved him from this fate as it prevented his earlier attempts to obtain a commision in the army and then the new Royal Air Force. After enlisting in the ranks of the Suffolk Regiment he was posted to the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary for the last three months of the war.

The Literary Machinist Occasional Essays on Literature and the Amateur Machinist By David M. MacMillan No. 1. Nevil Shute's Trustee from the Toolroom I was fortunate as a child to discover Nevil Shute's novel Trustee from the Toolroom . Though at the time this discovery seemed accidental, it was only partly so. I had the free run of the library of one of our neighbors - that was the accidental part. That this particular neighbor should have a copy of Trustee wasn't, in retrospect, accidental at all. Our neighbor was an engineer (MIT, class of 1918), well read and well traveled. Trustee , a novel by a bestselling author/engineer about engineering, occupied a natural place in his library. Shute was a popular writer, and Trustee a popular novel - one of the top ten fiction bestsellers of 1960. By 1972, so the back cover of a 1972 reprint of the novel claims, there were "over 14 million Nevil Shute books sold." Trustee was featured by the Book of the Month Club, where its review was written by Clifton Fadiman. Today, however, Shute's literary fortunes have waned. He isn't a forgotten author; several of his novels are in print and not difficult to find. He is remembered, though, not for Trustee but for novels such as On the Beach and A Town Like Alice Unfortunately, those qualities which endeared this novel to me as a mechanically inclined child, and which I think make it attractive to engineers and model engineers of any age, are not necessarily the same ones which make a generally accepted work of literature. In his Book of the Month Club review, Fadiman is quite blunt about this, calling the novel "an exciting story, honestly conceived, even if devoid of much literary grace." However, while it's true that there isn't much in the way of "literary grace" or literary innovation about this novel - Shute was no James Joyce or William Faulkner - the very honesty that Fadiman notes puts
