Features Vita Murasaki Shikibu Brief life of a legendary novelist: c. 973-1014 by Royall Tyler The Japanese woman who wrote the extraordinary Tale of Genji a thousand years ago is known only by a nickname. Her given name went unrecorded, which was normal for a daughter. Shikibu, which means "Bureau of Ceremonial," refers to a post once held by her father, and Murasaki, the name of a plant that produces a purple dyestuff, is her tale's main heroine. Our Murasaki was born into a lesser branch of the powerful Fujiwara family, whose males occupied most of the highest positions in the imperial government. The greatest might rule as regent or marry a daughter to the emperor and have an imperial grandson. Murasaki's father, however, was only a scholar and a provincial governor who served in Harima, Echigo, and Echizen, to which his daughter accompanied him in 996. Liza Dalby's fictional autobiography, The Tale of Murasaki

Murasaki Shikibu
Details about Murasaki Shikibu and her life are not really know. She lived in a time in Japan when the woman held a low position in society. Because of this, the exact date that she was born is not known. It is thought that she was born around 973 AD and that she died around 1025 AD. Her real name is not known either. During this time period only the emperor's wife's real name and birthdate were known. The Shikibu name comes from her father's position at court.
She was like the women in her book, a woman of the Heian period. The Tale of Genji is the first novel not only of Japanese literature, but of literature in general. It is considered to be one of the greatest and earliest novels in the world. It is known that Murasaki is the daughter of a governer of a province in the Fujiwara family.
Her father was also a well known scholar. Her father allowed her to study with her brother and even let her learn Chinese characters, which was improper for girls at that time.
She was married in her life for a short time and had one daughter. Both the death of her husband and her great talent brought her to court. It was at this time that she kept a diary which described court life. During these times she is thought to have written

    Little Known Kyoto: -
Sepulcher of Murasaki Shikibu and Ono no Takamura
When I recently read an English translation of Lady Murasaki Shikibu's tenth century Japanese classic, The Tale of Genji , I came to appreciate exactly why this is one of the greatest classics ever written. I was therefore determined, upon visiting Kyoto, to find any possible traces of her existence. So little is known about Murasaki - even her name is not known; but what is more remarkable is how much is known about her. It is not often that we are able to visit the grave of the author of one of the greatest world classics, but translator Edward G. Seidensticker ( The Tale of Genji Everyman p. vii) declared that "One can visit a spot in the northern environs of Kyoto that is described as [Murasaki's] grave; and the marvel is that it might just possibly be." According to the Kondasha Encyclopedia of Japan - Murasaki (1993) "Scholars who wish it in fact to be her grave have put together a reasonably persuasive argument." In the above picture you can see the entrance to Murasaki's Sepulcher, which is about a hundred yards south of the junction between Kitaoji and Horikawa streets, on the west side of the latter street. Lady Murasaki lies entombed in a great barrow, and to the right of her grave is that of another literary luminary, Ono no Takamura (see below). When I visited, my Japanese friend showed me how to use the provided matches to light the incense sticks at the foot of Murasaki's tomb as a mark of respect, and we clapped before praying for her soul.

Murasaki Shikibu is said to be the author of The Tale of Genji. Although the same can be said for all women of Murasaki's time, her real name and the date of birth and death cannot be confirmed even for her, the leading author of her day. The name of Murasaki Shikibu was that used for a court lady with "Murasaki" being used as a given name while "Shikibu" refers to her father's position at the court. Beside writing The Tale of Genji, Murasaki also showed her genius in her other famous book called The Diary of Murasaki Shikibu.
Murasaki Shikibu was born in a middle-level family of nobility during the middle of the Heian Period. Her father, Fujiwara Tametoki, was known as a scholar and man of literacy although he accomplished little of note as an official in the government. Perhaps in compensation for this, he took pains to see that his daughter was well learned. Murasaki Shikibu was remarkable when yet a child learning to read books that even educated boys found difficult.
Murasaki's childhood was not a happy one as her mother passing away soon after she was born followed by her elder sister on whom she depended. Murasaki married rather late into a family of similar social class. Within a few years, her husband died leaving Murasaki with a daughter and much grief and pain. It was against this background that Murasaki began writing The Tale of Genji in which she looks closely at the relationships of men and women and the unfortunate circumstances in which women find themselves placed in.

Her book, The Tale of Genji (1000) was the world's first great novel and considered by many to be Japan's greatest work of fiction. "Foolish are they indeed who trust to fortune!" she said. "A night of endless dreams , inconsequent and wild, is this my life ; none more worth telling than the rest." The 11th-century masterpiece of the Heian period celebrated the romantic tales of Prince Genji, the "Shining Prince," and was written for oral presentation in court. "Princes are the lamps that alight this world," she wrote in Chapter 9. The novel, which is twice as long as

    Murasaki Shikibu
Murasaki Shikibu ? or d. ?) was a novelist poet , and servant of the imperial court during the Heian period of Japan . She is well known as the author of The Tale of Genji , written about year 1000 and said to be the first novel in the world literature. Lady Murasaki's mother died while she was a child, so Murasaki was raised, contrary to customs of the time, by her father, a scholar and officer of the imperial court. During Heian-era Japan, couples lived separately and children were raised by the mother and her family. Also contrary to customs of the time, her father gave her a male's education. Males were educated in and taught Chinese , the official language of the court, while females were taught kana and poetry . Her father praised her intelligence and ability, but lamented she was "born a woman". At the royal court, she was the lady in waiting for Empress Shoshi/Akiko,and may have been hired by Fujiwara Michinaga to serve the Empress. Three works are attributed to Murasaki, the most important being

There is a woman called Saemon no Naishi, who, for some strange reason, took a dislike to me, I cannot think why. I heard all sorts of malicious rumors about myself. His Majesty was listening to someone reading the Tale of Genji Collected Works of Po Chu-i , and, because she evinced a desire to know more about such things, we carefully chose a time when other women would not be present and, amateur that I was, I read with her the two books of in secret; we started the summer before last. I hid this fact from the others, as did Her Majesty, but somehow His Excellency and the Emperor got wind of it and they had some beautiful copies made of various Chinese books, which His Excellency then presented to Her Majesty. That gossip Saemon no Naishi could never have found out that Her Majesty had actually asked me to study with her, for, if she had, I would never have heard the last of it. Ah what a prattling, tiresome world it is!
