50. Prince Zaleski And Cummings Monk By M.P. Shiel

Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk by M.P. Shiel Reintroduce yourself to another classic author of Arkham House; M.P. Shiel. We have found some excellent reviews by the readers of his day. We'd like to share those with you. Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947) began life in the West Indies of Irish parentage and later studied languages and medicine in London, before the appearance of his first book PRINCE ZALESKI, in 1895. He subsequently wrote over thirty novels including such classic works as THE LORD OF THE SEA, THE YELLOW DANGER, HOW THE OLD WOMAN GOT HOME, and his science fiction masterpiece, THE PURPLE CLOUD. Shiel’s shorter macabre fiction, collected in Arkham House’s XELUCHA AND OTHERS, embraces several of the finest weird tales written during the present century, and compellingly evinces the fanciful imagination and magical command of the English language possessed by this Grand Viscount of the Grotesque. Here's what they said about Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk:
Prince Zaleski: "Mr. M. P. Shiel has in this volume produced something which is always rare, and which is every year becoming a greater rarity - a work of literary invention characterized by substantial novelty. We have Poe's analysis and Poe's glamour, but they are no longer distinct; they are combined in a new synthesis which stamps a new imaginative impression. A finely wrought structure in which no single line impairs the symmetry and proportion. One of the most boldly planned and strikingly executed stories of its kind which has appeared for many a long day. We believe there is nothing in Prince Zaleski which that great inventor and masterly manipulator of the spoils of invention (Poe) would have disdained to father." - Daily Chronicle.

It may not be obvious to most readers what Eden Phillpotts, Arthur Ransome, Frank Swinnerton, and Dylan Thomas have in common with Lawrence and Gerald Durrell, Dorothy Sayers, Rebecca West, Roy Campbell, and Henry Miller; or Martin Secker, Victor Gollancz, Alfred A. Knopf, Stephen Potter, J. B. Priestley, and A. F. Tschiffely with Carl Van Vechten, E. H. W. Meyerstein, Edgar Jepson, John Heath-Stubbs, Herbert Palmer, Derek Patmore, J. C. Trewin, and Arthur Machen. Books apart, very little. Their one certain bond is loyalty to a fellow writer, as a result of which they became members of a literary aristocracy whose origins lie in the last century. (Confirming their appointment as dukes, duchesses, and lesser nobility, I have by me three "State Papers" imposingly printed on eighteenth-century paper and signed in 1947, 1949, and 1951 by G. S. Fraser and Iain Fletcher in their capacities of Grand and Acting Grand Chamber-lains of the Realm of Redonda.) Before all this gets out of hand we must go back to 1865 and the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean.

    About the Collection
M.P. Shiel Finding Aid for the Collection Inventory List ... Shiel Links About the Collection The A. Reynolds Morse Collection of M.P. Shiel is one of the most complete collections of Shieliana in existence. The Collection contains not only the most complete set of all editions of Shiel's writings and some Shiel manuscripts, but also has reference and classic works on science fiction, detection, fantasy, and mystery as well as the works of Louis Tracy and John Gawsworth. Also included in the Collection are some of Mr. Morse's correspondence and research notes concerning M.P. Shiel. In 1942, Ren Morse read his first novel by M.P. Shiel. After five years of reading, studying, and collecting, Mr. Morse published in 1948 The Works of M.P. Shiel: A Study in Bibliography , one year after Shiel's death. Innovative in concept, the Shielography contained not only the most complete listing of Shiel's known works at the time of publication, but also comments, insights, and evaluations by Morse. In 1977, John D. Squires wrote to Mr. Morse to ascertain whether or not he was the author of the Shielography. As Mr. Morse recounts, it was Mr. Squires who "lured me to re-examine this redoubtable author whose first editions and other memorabilia had meantime slept peacefully in the attic!" The letter began a collaboration between the two to revive interest in Shiel. This resulted in the publishing of four massive volumes about the life and work of M.P. Shiel, the re-issuance of one novel and the publishing of Shiel's last, unpublished novel
