S hiel wrote twenty-five novels and dozens of short stories, most of them romantic mysteries or fast-paced adventures, several dealing with world conquest. Others are distinctly supernatural or border on science fiction. Most are interspersed with discourses on his philosophy and sociology of the Overman. And most, regardless of genre, were written in Shiel's patented poetic prose. His early novel The Purple Cloud (1901) is a classic "last man on earth" story and probably his masterpiece. H. G. Wells called it "colossal... [a] brilliant novel." A New York Post review declared the author to be "a genius drunk with the hottest juices of our language." Shiel's work drew high praise from many notable writers and critics: E. M. Benson: "[Shiel's work is] a glorious excursion into the incredible." E. F. Shiel written for The Borzoi 1925: being a sort of record of ten years of publishing reprinted as "ON SCHOLAR-ARTISTRY (The Writings of Arthur Machen)" in Science, life and literature Williams and Norgate Ltd: London (1950) OF LIVING people known to me none I think more, so he has no time, is too preoccupied with seeing to feel, and here is where the artist comes neatly in to rescue me, he having heard what the scientist says, having time, too, to admire, and to tell of it in innuendoes, with winks, saying: "It is not dull! I know a thing or two, I know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows!" And if one asks him: "But is that all?" he winks at one, saying: "Enough said; I give you a hint: eye has not seen, never heart fancied; tolling melodious notes, wrung with emotion, it rolls; fairy! drunken! enough said." But is it true? Fairy? If it is a fancy, then it is not of the least interest or importance; but the scientist says "yes, a fact", and the artist with streaming tears calls God to witness it. The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel First published 1901 What's up with that? Adam Jeffson is the only survivor of a Polar expedition gone disastrously wrong. While sailing back, he discovers that a plague has wiped out everybody on Earth; the planet is covered by a thin layer of purple dust. Adam (nice name, eh?) wanders around the ruins of Europe, alone, for the better part of 100 pages. At one point he couples up eight carriages to a locomotive engine and tools around England. He builds a palace in Vauclaire, and while building it, he abandons the journal he has been keeping, to resume it 17 years later. With absolute power and absolute autonomy, he can let the good and the evil aspects (and he's not an especially honorable man) of his personality run rampant, and he becomes quite insane. While wandering around Turkey, he encounters a young woman who was apparently an infant during the Purple Cloud and has never seen another human being. He teaches her how to speak English. Near the end of the book, he decides that he has to kill her, but doesn't – she attempts to kill herself, but he musters his surgical skills to save her – and they get "married" shortly afterward.
