http://www.mvonline.com/vote2000/editorial/editorial-51.html
Re-elect Shetterly in District 34
THE ISSUE: Who should represent District 34 in the Oregon House of Representatives. WE SAY: Lane Shetterly has served well for two terms; re-elect him. Experience counts, and it will count very heavily in the next session of the Oregon Legislature. That and a record of good service are ample reasons to re-elect Lane Shetterly in House District 34. His opponents are Democrat Marilyn Slizeski, Libertarian Party nominee J.T. Barrie and Constitution Party candidate Steve Walker. Shetterly, a Republican, has been a solid performer in his two terms, including service as chairman of the House Judiciary-Civil Law Committee in the last session. He was part of a moderate bloc that prodded the Republican caucus into appropriating more money for education. He has obtained legislation that helped constituents needs directly. He won a change in how the state hears appeals of administrative decisions, achieving a fundamental gain in fair play for citizens. Because of term limits, a re-elected Shetterly will be among a handful of veterans in the House. He has hopes of running for House speaker; at the least, if Republicans keep control of the House, he'll be a committee chairman. Barrie campaigns on the basis of ending the war on drugs, and views every issue through that filter - an approach that would doom him to irrelevance in the Legislature. Walker wants to shrink government; his avowed support for initiatives that would devastate state services disqualifies him, in our view.

Will Shetterly Sorry, but your browser does not have the necessary plug-in to play the midi. If you enjoy looking at the stars on a warm summer night, and find yourself wishing upon a falling star, then a story by Will Shetterly is definitely something you'd enjoy reading. As a fantasy writer, Will's able to mix a bit of magic with the mundane world and turn it into something very special. He's able to see all the wonders of the world, with the eyes of a child and gently reminds us of this precious treasure we adults have hidden deep within ourselves. We were very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit with Will (and his lovely wife, Emma) at Dragon Con. Both of them are exceptional people and it was such to pleasure to have met them. On another note, it has been asked if Will's "Captain Confederacy" is still available. Will has stated that there were 12 issues published by SteelDragon Press (which is no longer in business) and 4 issues published by Epic Comics. He also mentioned that there are no immediate plans for continuing him presently, but may or may not consider continuing at a future date. Emma reminded me that there is a fairly standard term for something that's not the reason for a conflict, but that kicks it off: the inciting incident. In the Henry VIII-Thomas Moore knockdown of the century, the inciting incident was Henry's decision to divorce.
But the inciting incident may not be the same for each side. For Americans, the inciting incident of WWII was the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but for Japanese, it would probably be the earlier U.S. fuel and supplies embargo.

Regarding my post about A Man for All Seasons , Henry VIII and Thomas More, and my wish for ways to differentiate between what causes a problem and what starts one, John M. Ford writes,
The two terms you may be looking for anent Tom and Hank Go 'Round the Block are "proximate" and "ultimate cause." They're usually used in crash/disaster analysis, though they can apply to anything that has causes (which is, of course, most things).
A number of years ago, a river bridge on the NY Thruway collapsed during heavy rain. There was traffic on it, and eight people died. (The bridge was over Schoharie Creek, west of Albany, if you want to read more about it.) One of the main supports had washed away in the swollen river, and it was assumed at first that, well, that was what happened. An investigation, however, showed that the river had for some time been eroding the soil around the pier (called "scour") to a degree that wasn't sensible given normal bridge construction techniques. Now, scour happens everywhere something resists water; the normal procedure is to put big (500 lb or so) jagged rocks called riprap, around whatever you're trying to protect. The riprap shields the pier directly, of course, but it also breaks up the flow. To finish the backstory, the engineering firm had never placed any riprap. At all. They'd charged NY State for it, but, well, these things happen.

Review Shetterly, Will. Elsewhere Will Shetterly has written a fantastic novel of magic, sci-fi, and punk rock. Imagine a place where magic and technology mix with some very interesting results. A place where elves, humans, and the crossbreed halfies intermingle in a sometimes hostile environment. Then throw in the fact that this place is run by gangs of wild teens. Welcome to Bordertown, the setting of Elsewhere . A place located between the human world and the Elflands. Bordertown is a place for teens to start a new life on their own. Teens from both sides of the border. Will Shetterly has successfully mixed modern teenage life with magic and fantasy. The book is very well written and most enjoyable. The book's target audience is teenagers. The novel allows kids to imagine themselves in the magic city, running wild and having a blast. I believe any teenager would love reading this book. Younger kids may enjoy it but due to some of the language and themes I would not recommend it to kids under the age of eleven. If you enjoyed this also read: NeverNever by Will Shetterly

MAILBAG: God and diabetes, plus a little diary as Emma sings
maleficent wrote:
Ryan and I define God as "All We Hold Holy"...it works well when we're doing rituals or visiting churches of other faiths.
Also, regarding the diabetes discussion...what I am is defined as "insulin resistant". My body does not want to use the insulin it produces. So I have a condition popularly known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which is rather a bitch, and which the doctors are now saying is caused by insulin resistance. I had my blood sugar up at 123, now it's down to 96. You guys might take a look at a book called The Schwarzbein Principle ...it's an all
around good healthy way of eating and it lowered my cholesterol radically. She has vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus.

I shouldn't bother trying to describe God. Everyone's got a better handle on it than me. Maybe that should be my description: "God: What you understand better than me." Tonight, I'm back from a nice dinner party with a nice bunch of neighbors, and Emma's in the other room playing guitar and singing ("Pancho and Lefty") and I'm just thinking that God is the sense that life can be good, and it'd be nice to make it good for everyone.
As for diabetes, it's been quite an education. All I think I can tell anyone else tonight is that if you think you might have it, learn about it and deal with it. Yes, it'll be a lot of work. But at the end of that work your life will be even better than it was before you knew you might have diabetes.

the author's conceit
Here's something that most writers don't think about, but all writers should: Why does a story exist in the form that it's written? In many cases, the answer is simple, and it doesn't matter whether the writer thought about it: If it's told in the first person, a character involved with the events thought it was important enough to tell. If it's told in the third, someone who knew the facts decided to tell them.
The author's failure to think about the conceit explains why stories that end "And then I died" are horribly unsatisfying. If the narrator died, how come the story exists? If the narrator came back as a vampire or had her mind transferred into a computer, no problem. But if the narrator dies at the end of the story, who lived to write the tale?

Of Will Shetterly's six novels , he considers his latest, Dogland (Tor, 1997), to be his best. Kirkus agrees, calling it a "compelling, absorbing, hard-edged work." And NPR's Ellen Kushner says it's "A masterwork. A particularly American magic realism that touches the heart of race and childhood in our country." The accolades and interest in Will's work seem to be coming from all corners of the media: Along with his wife, novelist Emma Bull, he just sold a screenplay for an animated SF movie. Join us with Will as we hear about his future fictions and peek into his past - the Liavek anthologies, his cameo in the trashy horror film Toxic Avenger, and his 1994 campaign for governor of Minnesota.
