A number of portraits including two gravure frontispiece portraits in each volume and folding facsimile of an autograph letter. 8vo, publisher's original mustard yellow cloth, with beautiful and intricate patterned overlays to the covers, the spines lettered in gilt, edges uncut. xv, 369; viii, 325, (3), errata leaf, 2pp. advertisements. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY SCARCE IN THIS STATE OF PRESERVATION. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is an especially interesting historical and literary figure. The daughter of a woman considered by many to be one of the first contemporary Western feminists (her mother died shortly after her birth), she was encouraged in her studies by her father and achieved a great deal by age seventeen. She married Percy Bysshe Shelly in 1816 and was a prolific writer even before his death in 1822. Mary Shelley is reknown for writing "Frankenstein" and in her numerous other writings, generally addressed herself to dynamic subjects such as the destruction of humanity by the plague.

MARY SHELLEY AND FRANKENSTEIN
NEWS!!!!
10/15/2002 - I haven't updated this site in over a year. I got married and now have a 4 month old baby. I don't know if I will ever have time to work on this site as I have new interests and am so busy. I will keep the site online, however, as reference for researchers. If you email me any questions, it is unlikely that they will be answered.
5/26/2001 - I haven't worked on this site in quite some time.
11/11/2000 - I have updated links on the 'Literary Sources of Frankenstein' page. Of particular interest is the site for the complete Bullfinches Mythology and the Paradise Lost Resource Guide.
10/29/2000 - This site is going to be reengineered and will become part of a different domain in the near future. This first stage of this will be converting the site to XHTML.
