SHAW AND THE DON: GEORGE BERNARD SHAW'S RECEPTION OF MOZART'S DON GIOVANNI
Gareth Cox
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
This is the text of a talk given to the Limerick Philosophical Society in 1993. It was illustrated with many musical examples from Don Giovanni [these are indicated in the text with their relevant bar numbers]. It deals generally with Shaw’s lifelong fascination with the music of Mozart and in particular with the influence on his work of one of Mozart’s greatest operas, Don Giovanni . Scholars, both philologists and dramaturgists alike, have long recognized the importance of structural aspects of Mozart’s music on Shaw’s dramas. Shaw himself felt that a certain knowledge of Mozart was a necessary prerequisite for an understanding of his works and in a letter to the American actress Molly Tompkins he wrote, "I don't know whether you are a musician, but if not, then you don't know Mozart, and if you don't know Mozart, you will never understand my technique". [Tompkins, 11] The two major cultural figures of Mozart and Shaw appear at first glance to be an unlikely pairing: One an eighteenth-century composer of music mainly for the aristocracy; the other a twentieth-century socialist. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in 1756, represents the apogee of the Viennese Classical style and composed works in practically all musical genres including such unforgettable operas as The Marriage of Figaro The Magic Flute , and of course, Don Giovanni . George Bernard Shaw was born exactly a hundred years later than Mozart in 1856. He enjoyed an enormous reputation as a prolific dramatist through such plays as

What a crime to waste it on children If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience Hell is paved with good intentions, not bad ones. All men mean well. If you are going to tell people the truth , you'd better make them laugh . Otherwise they'll kill you. I often quote myself, it adds spice to my conversation. isn't about f i n d i n g yourself. L i f e is a b o u t creating yourself." ~ George Bernard Shaw Irish playwright and novelist George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was born on this day in Dublin and known for his barbed wit. "I often quote myself," he said. "It adds spice to my conversation." Self-taught because he disliked formal training, G.B.S. (he disliked his name "George," too) began as a London theatre critic, then wrote his first novel to further criticize the English stage. He explained his reason for action : "You don't learn to hold your own in the world by standing on guard, but by attacking and getting well-hammered yourself." His over 52 plays and pamphlets among them, Candida Pygmalion (1912), and Saint Joan (1923)showcase memorable characters and brilliant insights: "If you are going to tell people the truth , you'd better make them laugh . Otherwise they'll kill you." Famous for mixing philosophy and humor, G.B.S. wrote most of his own work in shorthand. "A drama critic is a man who leaves no turn unstoned," he said. In 1925, Shaw won the

Shavian
The playwright George Bernard Shaw was an outspoken critic of the idiosyncrasies of English orthography. He campaigned for simplification of spelling and a reform of the English alphabet. In his last will he wanted that Britain`s Public Trustee seeks and publishes an alphabet consisting of circa 40 letters. Every letter should describe a phoneme of the English language. He donated all his money to set up a competition for seeking such an alphabet. The version finally selected was designed by Kingsley Read and today it is known as Shavian. An edition of his play Androcles and the Lion was published in both the standard Latin alphabet and in Shavian. The development of Shavian had little success as other attempts to reform the English spelling. Today only a small number of people is able to speak and write in Shavian. The Internet is used as a forum for those who still believe in the idea of a spelling reform. Several other books were translated into Shavian and the special edition of Androcles and the Lion is becoming a highy asked book. Structure The alphabet consists of 48 letters and one full stop. There are no cases, the numbers and other punctuation marks are the same as in Latin and there is one additional punctuation mark called "name mark" which is used to indicate proper nouns. The letters are indicative of their sounds, /

(NB: Shaw's full name was George Bernard Shaw and many people still use this fuller form but it is clear that he himself wished the 'George' to be dropped.)
Shaw was born in Dublin and although he lived almost the whole of his life in England he still insisted on retaining his Irish nationality. He was a keen, if very selective, supporter of Irish causes. His family was Protestant and, after not very happy schooldays, he reluctantly began work in a land agent's office. Eventually however he emigrated to London with his mother and sister, who both hoped to develop their musical careers while he himself began to write. Shaw's early years in England were marked by poverty and between 1879 and 1883 he wrote five novels, all of them scorned by major publishers although at least two, 'Love Among The Artists' and 'Cashel Byron's Profession', have since been taken more seriously as casting light on his later work.
Shaw's first public impact as a writer came with his work as music critic on the Star newspaper (1888-90) using the pseudonym Corno di Bassetto. He did much to encourage public interest in opera, in particular the works of
