Sharp, William [f E u m u E O u Pronunciation Key Sharp, William, pseud. Fiona Macleod , Scottish poet and man of letters. Under his own name he wrote literary biographies; poems, including the volume Earth's Voices (1884); and novels, notably Silence Farm (1899). With his wife he compiled the anthology Lyra Celtica (1896). Under the name Fiona Macleod, supposedly a talented Celtic lady, Sharp wrote his best novels and poems, including Pharais The Mountain Lovers (1895), and The Washer of the Ford (1896), as well as two plays, The House of Usna (1903) and The Immortal Hour (1908). Delicate and romantic, these works treat life in Scotland, evoking a haunting, almost supernatural atmosphere. See biography by F. Alaya (1970). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

William Sharp's Sospiri di Roma (1891)
Andrew Managravite
illiam Sharp is probably remembered these daysif at allas the original, albeit less adventuresome, Fernando Pessoa. Sharp's sole heteronym was the "Celtic Twilight" poet and dramatist Fiona MacLeod, who, as fate would have it, was more highly regarded as a creative talent that her originator. Nevertheless, Sharp, writing under his own name, was not without his gifts. He was a serviceable, if unimaginative critic. His volume of dramatic sketches Vistas (1894) was the closest that any British writer of his time ever got to creating pure Symbolist theater in the manner of Maeterlinck. Then there are the poems that appeared in his 1891 collection Sospiri di Roma The "Sospiri" poems have never been easy to obtain. The original volume has never, to the best of my knowledge, been reprinted. Sixteen of the poems were selected for inclusion in a 1909 volume Songs and Poems , and this volume is somewhat easier to locate, though it's far from common. However, I suspect it has been reprinted and should be available for study. Sharp has never been an especial favorite of anthologists, and, ironically, the best "advertisement" for these poems has come from a non-literary source, namely, the American composer Charles T. Griffes who transformed several of them into piano and small orchestral sketches. Clearly the composer was drawn to Sharp's Roman dream world, albeit not sufficiently to set his words directly to music. Perhaps Griffes felt that the words, if spoken aloud, contained enough music of their own, and so was content to compose a series of interpretations that can almost serve as accompaniments to the poet's words.

William Sharp "Fiona MacLeod"
Novelist
Son of a muslin manufacturer and a mother with Scandinavian blood, William Sharp was born in Paisley on 12th September 1855 and left when aged 12 years. "Celt in heart and spirit" he was a delicate "merry and mischievous" child, also a loner with a strong imagination. From his Highland nurse, and reinforced in later life by many visits there, he learned about the Celtic sagas. He attended Glasgow University but did not graduate. Diligent but unconventional, his interests included nature, folklore and foreign languages and literature. He found work with a lawyer, but an attack of typhoid so weakened him that he went to Australia to recuperate. Based on this visit was his first novel Sport of chance Returned from Australia, he worked for a bank in London and on medical advice turned down the offer of a literary professorship. While in London, his move into a career in writing was influenced by the artist, Sir Joseph Noel Paton , a one-time pattern designer in Paisley. In 1884 he had married his cousin

  • This is a fascinating collection of little known sonnets. The editors have culled from books and periodicals a treasury of poems rarely if ever anthologized before or since. Their notes at the end illuminate the eccentricities of the poets and their time.

First World War.com Primary Documents - william G sharp on the Paris Gun, 3 April 1918. william G sharp on the Paris Gun. Washington, April 3rd.

Primary Documents: William G Sharp on the Paris Gun, 3 April 1918
Updated - Saturday, 13 March, 2004 Reproduced below is an account of the early use of the German Kaiser Wilhelm Geschutz - better known as the Paris Gun , in March 1918. Written by the U.S. Ambassador to Paris, William G Sharp, his account records how a shell from the enormous gun - capable of firing shells into the stratosphere from locations as far as 131km from Paris - crashed through the roof of the church at St. Gervais during a service on Good Friday, 29 March 1918, killing approximately 100 people. The Paris Gun was more of a propaganda weapon used by the Germans at home, and inflicted relatively little actual damage to Paris; it's terror capability was initially much feared however. It was first fired on 21 March 1918 to coincide with the opening of the great German Spring Offensive. Click here to read a British press report on the gun. William G Sharp on the Paris Gun Washington, April 3rd The Secretary of State has received from Ambassador Sharp in Paris a graphic report of his visit to the scene of the horrible tragedy which occurred on the afternoon of Good Friday in a church by the explosion of a German shell projected from far back of the enemy lines a distance of more than seventy miles. The appalling destruction wrought by this shell is, as the Ambassador remarked, probably not equalled by any single discharge of any hostile gun in the cruelty and horrors of its results.
