Shakespeare, William (1564-1616)

Navigation Info
The supreme English poet and playwright, universally recognized as the world's greatest and most popular of all dramatists for more then 350 years. On the stage, in the movies, and on television his plays are watched and enjoyed by vast audiences. People pleasurably read his plays again and again and students that read his works for the first time are delighted. Shakespeare's continued popularity is due to his plays being filled with action, his characters believable, and his language thrilling to hear or read; his comedies are full of fun, lively characters, witty dialogue, joyous and romantic plots. Underlying all this is his deep humanity. Being a profound student of people, he understood them deeply, having a great tolerance, sympathy, and love for all, good or evil. Although the precise date of many of Shakespeare's plays is in doubt, his dramatic career is generally divided into four periods: (1) the period up to 1594, (2) the years from 1594 to 1600, (3) the years from 1600 to 1608, and (4) the period after 1608.

    William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare remains a mysterious figure regarding to his personal history. There are only two primary sources for information: his works, and various legal and church documents that have survived. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, around April 23, 1564. Church records from Holy Trinity Church indicate that he was baptized there on April 26, 1564. William was born to John Shakespeare, a glover and leather merchant, and Mary Arden, a landed heiress. William was the third of eight children the Shakespeare family. Unfortunately, three of his siblings died in childhood. On November 28, 1582, at the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway. She was pregnant at the time. She was from Shottery, a village close to from Stratford. Anne was eight years older than Shakespeare. Their first daughter, Susanna, was born on May 26, 1583. Two years later William and Anne had twins, Hamnet and Judith. Most people think that that Shakespeare arrived in London around 1588 and began to establish himself as an actor and playwright. Shakespeare demonstrated considerable talent. By 1592, however, Shakespeare was already recognized as an actor and playwright. By 1594, he was not only acting and writing for the Lord Chamberlain's Men, but was also a managing partner in the operation as well. When the plague forced theatre closings in the 1590s, Shakespeare and his company made plans for the Globe Theatre in the Bankside district, which was across the river from London proper.

We’ve paid five pounds – approximately $8.50 – to see a performance of The Life of Henry the Fift (Henry V.) In the early 1600’s, at the first Globe Theatre – Shakespeare’s "Wooden O," groundlings (commoners) paid one English penny. Two pennies entitled a patron to a seat on a bench in the gallery; protected from sun and rain by a thatched roof made of water reed. Three pennies bought a cushioned seat close to the stage where one could see and be seen and the most prestigious seats of all at six pennies – the Lord’s rooms – were behind and above the stage. The groundlings, also known as "stinkards" - they rarely washed themselves or their clothes - stood in a yard covered with a mixture of hazelnut shells, cinders, ash, sand and silt. Here they ate and drank, fought, cheered, hissed and sometimes critiqued an offending actor by throwing an orange. The orange was and is a useful piece of fruit; its scent protects the nose from stench and it can be eaten when a groundling feels a pang of hunger. Today, most of us shower, deodorize, sip from bottles of spring water and enjoy an ice cream, but cheers for the British and hisses for the French are still heard during

    96. The Classic Text: William Shakespeare
has been more studied and written about, or has had more influence on the literaryand social culture of Western civilization than that of william shakespeare.
    http://www.uwm.edu/Library/special/exhibits/clastext/clspg097.htm
I t can be (and has been) argued that perhaps no other body of work save the Bible has been more studied and written about, or has had more influence on the literary and social culture of Western civilization than that of William Shakespeare. It is difficult to encapsulate the impact of Shakespeare's writing. The editors of the catalog Printing and the Mind of Man have captured the crux of the matter as well as anyone: The magic of Shakespeare's poetry is potent only in his own tongue; but the great theatrical scenes, the great dramatic figures are universal. Hamlet's doubts, the doomed love of Romeo and Juliet, Brutus's dilemma, the Falstaffian image, the characters of Iago, Petruchio, and Lady Macbeth, are part of the fabric of western (and not only western) civilization. Henry V's summons to Agincourt, Othello's stand before the Signoria, Mark Antony's funeral oration for Caesar, Portia at Shylock's trial: these are more real to us than the history books. A mong the many scholarly endeavors surrounding Shakespeare's works, one the most ambitious is the Modern Language Association's New Variorum Shakespeare project, founded originally by Horace Howard Furness in the nineteenth century to produce critical editions of Shakespeare's plays that collate all editions and distill all current and historical commentary. The main editorial office for this massive project is housed here at the Golda Meir Library, under the general editorship of Dr. Robert Turner with assistance from Dr. Virginia Haas. The Golda Meir Library has built a significant Shakespeare collection to help support the goals of this important project, and to facilitate teaching and research in Shakespearean studies at UWM.

    William Shakespeare
Born (1564) and died (1616) on the same date - 23rd April
England's greatest poet and playwright was born at Stratford-upon-Avon, the son of a tradesman and Alderman of Stratford, John Shakespeare in 1564. William, the eldest son, and third child (of eight) was baptised on 26th April 1564 and probably educated at Stratford Grammar School, but little is known of his life up to his eighteenth year. He did not go to University and his younger contemporary and fellow-dramatist, Ben Johnson, would later speak disparagingly of his "small Latin, and less Greek" in the eulogy prefaced to the First Folio. However the Grammar School curriculum would have provided a formidable linguistic, and to some extent literary, education. Shakespeare's Birthplace Although, in 1575 when he was eleven, there was a great plague in the country and Queen Elizabeth journeyed out of London to avoid its consequences and stayed for several days at Kenilworth Castle near Stratford enjoying "festivities" arranged by her host Lord Leicester. It is probable these events may have made a strong impact on the mind of young William. At the age of Eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior. Five years later he left for London. William worked at the Globe Theatre and appeared in many small parts. He first appeared in public as a poet in 1593 with his Venus and Adonis and the following year with The Rape of Lucrece. He became joint proprietor of The Globe and also had an interest in the Blackfriars Theatre.
