The Life of William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare's father, John Shakespeare, moved to the idyllic town of Stratford-upon-Avon in the mid-sixteenth century, where he became a successful landowner, moneylender, wool and agricultural goods dealer, and glover. In 1557 he married Mary Arden . John Shakespeare lived during a time when the middle class grew and became wealthier and wealthier, thus allowing its members increasing freedoms, luxuries, and voice in the local government. He took advantage of the opportunities afforded him through this social growth and in 1557 became a member of the Stratford Council, an event which marked the beginning of an illustrious political career. By 1561 he was elected one of the town's fourteen burgesses, where he served as constable, one of two chamberlains, and alderman successively. In these positions he administered borough property and revenues. In 1567 he was made bailiff, the highest elected office in Stratford, and the equivalent of a modern day mayor. In 1582, at the age of eighteen, William Shakespeare married the twenty-six year old Anne Hathaway. Their first daughter, Susanna, was baptized only six months later, which has given rise to much speculation concerning the circumstances surrounding the marriage. In 1585, twins were born to the couple, and baptized Hamnet and Judith Shakespeare. Hamnet died at the young age of eleven by which time Shakespeare was already a successful playwright. Around 1589 Shakespeare wrote his first play, Henry VI, Part 1. Sometime between his marriage and writing this play he and his wife moved to London, where he pursued a career as a playwright and actor.

William Lindsay Windus (1822-1907)
Windus worked in Liverpool, where he was elected a member of the Liverpool Academy in 1848. In 1850 he saw a painting by Millais at the Royal Academy in London and joined the cause of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first important work was Burd Helen, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. The harsh criticism of John Ruskin so discouraged Windus that he stopped painting in 1859 and no longer exhibited his work. Home Page Artists Plays ... Odd thought: I've always had this problem with putting the "apostrophe s" on the "Midsummer", instead of the "Night", when writing the title of this play. Not that relevant, but something I notice, a lot. The way to remember where the "s" goes, is to think the "dream" belongs to the "night", not really just to the "midsummer".

Little is known about William Shakespeare - some critics even claim that he was merely a front for another playwright. What is known, however, is that he was universally popular in his own time and his works have been heralded as the finest ever examples of the use of the English language.
Shakespeare was adept at crafting words and sentences for maximum effect and, because of this, he was instrumental in the changes that were occuring to the English language during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Shakespeare's power with language was coupled with a remarkable poetic ability evident throughout his plays and in his collection of sonnets.
In the world today, Shakespeare's plays are performed more than those of any other dramatist; standing testiment to the timeless nature of his works.
Source : Classics Network Editorial Team
English poet, dramatist, and actor, considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Some of Shakespeare's plays, such as HAMLET and ROMEO AND JULIET, are among the most famous literary works of the world. Shakespeare was the most popular dramatist of his age. However, his early works did not match the artistic quality of Marlowe's dramas. If he had died on the same year than Marlowe, in 1593, today he perhaps would be considered a minor poet. Shakespeare became the first to appeal and to meet with the full approval of a broad and mixed public embracing almost all levels of society... [

Cassius' words to Brutus in Julius Caesar could well be Shakespeare's words to his audience with respect to his plays:
And since you know you cannot see yourself
So well as by reflection, I, your glass,
Will modestly discover to yourself
That of yourself which you yet know not of.
In his dramatic works, Shakespeare has provided insights into human nature which, in the opinion of many of his disciples, equal those of the greatest modern psychologists. The impact of the Bard's insights is compounded by a masterful use of the language which makes him the mostly widely studied English writer.
Church records indicate that William Shakespeare was baptised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire on April 26, 1564. April 23 is widely accepted as his date of birth. His father was a respected tradesman (a glover who was involved in a variety of commercial activities) who held several important municipal offices.
Shakespeare was probably educated at the local grammar school. He would have viewed local theatrical productions by groups of travelling players. When he was eighteen he married the twenty-six year old Anne Hathaway. In May of 1583 she gave birth to their first daughter, Susanna. In 1585, twins, named Hamnet and Judith, were born. Shortly thereafter, Shakespeare left Stratford. It has been speculated that he was fleeing prosecution for poaching deer on the property of a local nobleman.
