Sexton, Anne Doctors
Genre Poem Keywords Art of Medicine Medical Ethics Medical Mistakes Professionalism Summary An even-handed consideration of the essence of doctoring, this poem packs into a few short lines the paradoxes, frustrations, rewards, and dangers inherent in the profession. It depicts the doctor's power, skill, humanity, dedication, and sometime arrogance, and the arena in which the work is done"they are only a human / trying to fix up a human." Sexton warns that arrogance has profound consequences: "If they [doctors] are too proud, . . . then they leave home on horseback / but God returns them on foot." Source The Complete Poems Publisher Houghton Mifflin (Boston) Edition 1982 (paperback) Miscellaneous This was a late poem of Sexton's, appearing in the collection, The Awful Rowing toward God, published in 1975.

Anne Sexton
A éste siguieron All My Pretty Ones Live or Die (Premio Pulitzer, 1966), Transformations , extraña recreación de 17 cuentos de hadas de los hermanos Grimm; Love Poems The Book Of Folly The Death Notebooks The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975) y Words for Dr. Y.

Anne Sexton received the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1966 for Live or Die
She was a "confessional poet" in the tradition of Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath and W.D. Snodgrass. Her work reflected the emotional anguish that characterized her life and resulted in her suicide in 1974 at the age of 46.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, in 1928, she married Alfred Muller Sexton II at the age of 19.
She was diagnosed with postpartum depression in 1954 after giving birth to a daughter in 1953 and suffered the first of several mental breakdowns.
She had shown an interest in writing poetry in high school and was encouraged to pursue it by her doctor at Westwood Lodge, a neuropsychiatric hospital where she sought help.

and there is nothing I can do about it ...
-ANNE SEXTON In her stormy life and work, no one needed less urging to let it all hang out than poet Anne Sexton. The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, who killed her self by carbon-monoxide poisoning in 1974 after innumerable mental breakdowns, was almost as obsessed with selfrevelation as she was with death. There seemed little that could be added to the images of incest, adultery and madness that she spread across more than a dozen volumes of confessional poetry in her abbreviated career. Even so, there were scandalized gasps of surprise when a story in The New York Times last week publicized that Martin Orne, a psychiatrist who treated Sexton for eight years, had turned over his complete files of the therapy, including more than 300 audiotapes of sessions with Sexton, for a forthcoming biography. Although the book, to be published by Houghton Mifflin in September, reveals the true extent of Sexton's instabilityshe heard voices sometimes, and at one point developed a fantasy personality named "Elizabeth"it was not the main issue. Biographies in general have grown notably uninhibited, from the hightoned dishiness of recent studies of Virginia Woolf to the nosecretsbarred celebrity-bashings penned by the likes of Kitty Kelley. The real dismay was over the breaching of what many regard as the last redoubt of privacy in modern life, the confidences of the couch. "If you were Orne's patient and you had something painful and important to tell him, would you?" asked Erwin Glikes, president of The Free Press, who until recently headed a publishing committee on First Amendment issues. "I certainly wouldn't. I wouldn't give him my forwarding address if I didn't want mail."

Sexton, Anne American poet, known for her frank treatment of intimate and taboo subjects. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Sexton attended Garland Junior College in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1947 until 1948, when she married. In 1955 she suffered a suicidal breakdown after the birth of her second child. During the course of psychiatric treatment, Sexton wrote poetry, an effort she had tried in school. In 1957 she joined a poetry workshop in Boston, which brought her into contact with American poets Robert Lowell and Sylvia Plath, both of whom became influences. Sexton's poetry soon developed a confessional style, in which she used images of incest, adultery, and madness to reveal the depths of her deeply troubled life.

    Sexton, Anne
(1928-1974), poet Born on November 9, 1928, in Newton, Massachusetts, Anne Harvey attended Garland Junior College for a year before her marriage in 1948 to Alfred M. Sexton II. She studied with the poet Robert Lowell at Boston University and also worked as a model and a librarian. Although she had written some poetry in childhood, it was not until the later 1950s that she began to write seriously. Her poems, which showed Lowell's influence, appeared in Harper's, The New Yorker, Partisan Review, and other periodicals, and her first book, To Bedlam and Part Way Back, was published in 1960. The book won immediate attention because of the intensely personal and relentlessly honest self-revelatory nature of the poems recording her nervous breakdown and recovery. Their imagery was frequently brilliant, and their tone was both sardonic and vulnerable. Her second book of poems, All My Pretty Ones (1962), continued in the vein of uncompromising self-exploration. Live or Die (1966), a further record of emotional illness, won a Pulitzer Prize and was followed by, among others, Love Poems Transformations The Book of Folly The Death Notebooks The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975) and 45 Mercy Street (1976, edited by her daughter, Linda Gray Sexton) were published posthumously.

    Anne Sexton

This page is dedicated to the work and life of Anne Gray Sexton whose poetry related to the world the social anxiety of growing up as a female and living as a woman in postwar American society. Though disabled by depression and dissatisfaction with life as a suburban housewife,Anne used her poetry as therapy, which undoubtedly prolonged her life. The purpose of this page is to honor the courage and discipline she commanded; allowing her work to overshadow her tragic suicide and attract the recognition of the literary world to her greatness as an American poetess.
