B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Robert Browning (1812-1889) English poet, noted for his mastery of dramatic monologue. Robert Browning was long unsuccesful as a poet and financially dependent upon his family until he was well into adulthood. In his best works people from the past reveal their thoughts and lives as if speaking or thinking aloud. "Be sure I looked up her eyes
Happy and proud; at last I knew
Porphyria worshipped me; surprise
Made my heart swell, and still it grew
While I debated what to do.
That moment she was mine, mine, fair,
Perfectly pure and good; I found
A thing to do, and all her hair
In one long yellow string I wound
Three times her little throat around, And strangled her. No pain felt she; I am quite sure she felt no pain."
(from 'Porphyria's Lover' in Dramatic Lyrics Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, south London, as the son of Robert Browning, a wealthy clerk in the Bank of England, and Sarah Anna Wiedemann, of German-Scottish origin. Robert Browning Senior had spent in his youth some time on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, where he become disgusted at the slaves' treatment. Back at England, he thought of a career of an artist, but eventually accepted his job at the bank. Sarah Anna loved music and gardening. The historian Thomas Carlyle called her "the true type of a Scottish gentlewoman". Browning received scant formal education. However, his father encouraged him to read and he had access to his large (6,000 vols) library. The book collection filled most of the third storey at the family's house at New Cross. In his teens, Browning discovered

Short narrative, illustrated with line drawings.

"The Poet Speaks"
Life of Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann was born in 1810 in Zwickau, Saxony. It was in the large house Schumann read the classics - and the moderns: Schiller, Goethe, Jean Paul Richter; and he played Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
Schumann thought the girl played "amazingly well"; but that Clara's nose was to long, and her eyes - too large for her face.
But law school would begin - though Schumann soon wrote home that "its ice-cold definitions would crush the life out of" him. So he spent rather more time dreaming at the keyboard. A close friend and fellow disciple of Jean Paul's was a law student at Heidelberg; Schumann would go there.
To try to speak of Mendelssohn Schumann wrote, would be "to try and analyze grace or weight moonlight". Of Chopin, Schumann said simply, "Hats off, gentlemen - a genius!"
Schumann's mother was overjoyed by the news.
that at any moment they might meet in a third place and yet out of consideration for each other would be obliged - or thought they would be obliged - to behave like strangers - [all this]
But Schumann found that circumstances in the Austrian capital would not allow him to establish himself there musically.

Frost drifted through a string of occupations after leaving school, working as a teacher, cobbler, and editor of the Lawrence Sentinel . His first professional poem, "My Butterfly," was published on November 8, 1894, in the New York newspaper The Independent In 1895, Frost married Elinor Miriam White, who became a major inspiration in his poetry until her death in 1938.
