Entries Publication Data Advisory Board Maps ... World Civilizations Encyclopedia of North American Indians Seneca The Senecas call themselves on¸otowá[?]ka[?], 'People of the Big Hill." Their name in Iroquois Confederacy councils is Ho-nan-ne-hó-ont , "the Door Keeper." Historically, they were the westernmost nation of the League of the Iroquois and are depicted as being the "western door" of the figurative extended longhouse of the confederacy, reaching across New York State, with the Mohawks as the "eastern door" and the Oneidas, Onondagas, and Cayugas extending westward in that order to the Senecas. Foreign ambassadors wishing to approach the Iroquois were reminded to enter by one of the doors, through which they or their messages could pass to the other nations. The Senecas, Mohawks, and Onondagas are the Elder Brothers of the Iroquois Confederacy and have reciprocal relationships within league councils with the Oneidas and Cayugas, the Younger Brothers. The Senecas have eight chiefs in the confederacy. At the time of first contact with Euro-Americans, the Senecas occupied what is now western New York State. The western Senecas lived near the Genessee and Allegheny Rivers, and the eastern group near Canandaigua Lake. They resided in two large, and one or two smaller, agriculturally based villages. Agriculture was supplemented by hunting, fishing, and the gathering of fruits and vegetables.

DNR home page Seneca Creek State Park Area map General camping information 2004 Picnic Shelter Season Make a reservation The park, comprised of 6,300 acres, extends along 14.75 scenic miles of Seneca Creek, as it winds its way to the Potomac River. The Clopper Day-Use Area contains many scenic areas, including the 90-acre Clopper Lake, surrounded by forests and fields. Picnicking, boat rentals, trails and a tire playground are just some of its recreational opportunities. A restored 19th century cabin and a self-guided path interpret the history of the area. Nearby, the Schaeffer Farm Trail Area offers over 10 miles of marked trails for hiking and mountain biking. For the more adventuresome hiker, the 16.5-mile Seneca Creek Greenway Trail follows the entire course of the river. During May, the Schwartz peony gardens and field plants are in bloom. FEATURES Biking trails, boat rental, cross-country skiing, campfire programs, vending refreshments, fishing, flatwater canoeing and kayaking, hiking trails, historic interest, hunting, picnicking, playgrounds, riding trails, shelters, and restored 19th century cabin. Picnicking - Picnic areas with tables, grills, and comfort stations are open daily until sunset. Playgrounds are located near the picnic areas. Shelters for group picnics are available for rental.
