The seed for the first Woman's Rights Convention was planted in 1840, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton met Lucretia Mott at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London, the conference that refused to seat Mott and other women delegates from America because of their sex. Stanton, the young bride of an antislavery agent, and Mott, a Quaker preacher and veteran of reform, talked then of calling a convention to address the condition of women. Eight years later, it came about as a spontaneous event.
In July 1848, Mott was visiting her sister, Martha C. Wright, in Waterloo, New York. Stanton, now the restless mother of three small sons, was living in nearby Seneca Falls. A social visit brought together Mott, Stanton, Wright, Mary Ann McClintock, and Jane Hunt. All except Stanton were Quakers, a sect that afforded women some measure of equality, and all five were well acquainted with antislavery and temperance meetings. Fresh in their minds was the April passage of the long-deliberated New York Married Woman's Property Rights Act, a significant but far from comprehensive piece of legislation. The time had come, Stanton argued, for women's wrongs to be laid before the public, and women themselves must shoulder the responsibility. Before the afternoon was out, the women decided on a call for a convention "to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman."
To Stanton fell the task of drawing up the Declaration of Sentiments that would define the meeting. Taking the Declaration of Independence as her guide, Stanton submitted that "all men and women had been created equal" and went on to list eighteen "injuries and usurpations" -the same number of charges leveled against the King of England-"on the part of man toward woman."

The Orleans County Historical Association (OCHA) was founded in 1977 to preserve, restore, and maintain what is significant to the history and antiquity of Orleans County, New York. We support and promote historical projects in our county and the endeavors of our individual members. We foster and organize educational and entertaining programs. Guest speakers are invited several times per year. Meetings are held in various places throughout the county. In the past, OCHA has had a successful oral history project, paid for the microfilming of country newspapers from their beginning to present, published several historical books, funded historic markers and their placement. OCHA has also funded grants to Orleans County municipal historians to complete local history projects that benefit our area. Our members with their extensive grant writing knowledge have helped many historical organizations in Orleans County to obtain projects funding. Our membership consists of about 60 people most of whom live in Orleans County.

People, Places, and Things in Letchworth Park History Mary Jemison I n the fall of 1743, somewhere on the stormy Atlantic, a child was born to Thomas and Jane Jemison aboard the ship William and Mary. The little baby girl was named Mary, and although she was not aware of it, she was joining her parents and brothers and sisters on a voyage to the New World. T he Jemison family landed in Philadelphia and soon joined the other Scotch-Irish immigrants on the western frontier, a place that promised them cheap land and freedom. Thomas Jemison took his family to the Marsh Creek settlement near South Mountain (not far from present day Gettysburg PA), raised a cabin, and began to build a new life. A lthough life was hard on the western edge of the colony of Pennsylvania, Mary fondly recalled these "childish, happy days" full of hard work and the love of a family that now number six children. But when Mary was fifteen, these happy times came to a tragic end. T he French and Indian War was raging throughout the English Colonies and Canada. It was a bitter struggle between two European powers, and colonies and native people of both sides suffered. Those on the frontier suffered the most. I n the spring of 1758 a raiding party of French soldiers and Shawnee warriors descended upon the frontier region that included Marsh Creek. On Wednesday, April 5th, they swept over the little clearing where the Jemison's lived. The two oldest boys escaped, but Mary, her parents, and the rest of the family were taken captive.

1. Declaration of Sentiments When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one portion of the family of man to assume among the people of the earth a position different from that which they have hitherto occupied, but one to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankindrequires that they should declare the causes that impel them to such a course. He has never permitted her to exercise her inalienable right to the elective franchise. He has compelled her to submit to laws, in the formation of which she had no voice. He has withheld from her rights which are given to the most ignorant and degraded men_both natives and foreigners. Having deprived her of this first right of a citizen, the elective franchise. thereby leaving her without representation in the halls of legislation, he has oppressed her on all sides. He has made her, if married, in the eye of the law, civilly dead. He has taken from her all right in property. even to the wages she earns.

Town of West Seneca
WEST SENECA - was formed, as "Seneca," from Chicktowaga, Hamburgh and East Hamburgh, and Lancaster, Oct. 16, 1851; its name was changed March 25, 1852. It is situated on the shore of Lake Erie, near the center of the W. border of the co. Its surface is gently undulating in the E. and level in the W. The streams are Big Buffalo, Cazenove, and Smokes(1) Creeks. The soil is generally a sandy loam. The town is mainly settled by a society of German religionists, generally known as Ebenezers, but who style themselves the "Community of True Inspiration."(2) Middle Ebenezer, on Buffalo Creek, contains a church, calico printing factory, woolen factory, sawmill, oil mill, and 67 houses; Lower Ebenezer, on Cazenove Creek, contains a church, sawmill, gristmill, tannery, and 50 houses; and New Ebenezer contains a large manufactory of cotton and woolen goods, an extensive dying works, and 9 dwellings. Reserve, West Seneca Center, and West Seneca are p. offices. The first settlement was made by Reuben Sackett, in 1826.(3) There are 4 churches in town.(4) (1)Named from an Indian who resided near its mouth and who was an inveterate smoker.
