Extracts from Epistolas:
from The Extended Circle by Jon Wynne-Tyson. Direct link: How long shall we weary heaven with petitions for superfluous luxuries, as though we had not at hand wherewithal to feed ourselves? How long shall we fill our plains with huge cities? How long shall the people slave for us unnecessarily? How long shall countless numbers of ships from every sea bring us provisions for the consumption of a single mouth? An ox is satisfied with the pasture of an acre or two; one wood suffices for several elephants. Man alone supports himself by the pillage of the whole earth and sea. What! Has Nature indeed given us so insatiable a stomach, while she has given us such insignificant bodies? No, it is not the hunger of our stomachs, but insatiable covetousness which costs so much - Epistola, 1x

An unpopular rule is never long maintained.
As was his language so was his life.
Be not too hasty either with praise or blame; speak always as though you were giving evidence before the judgement-seat of the Gods.
Be silent as to services you have rendered, but speak of favours you have received.
Consult your friend on all things, especially on those which respect yourself. His counsel may then be useful where your own self-love might impair your judgment.
Dangerous is wrath concealed. Hatred proclaimed doth lose its chance of wreaking vengeance.
Delay not; swift the flight of fortune's greatest favours.
Desultory reading is delightful, but to be beneficial, our reading must be carefully directed.
Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.

Seneca Schoolhouse Museum The Story Of An American One Room School The Seneca Schoolhouse was begun in 1865 when Upton Darby, a miller at Seneca, raised subscriptions among his neighbors to build a school. The Seneca sandstone of which it is constructed was quarried nearby.
The Seneca School was for many years supported by the parents of the students, who paid the teacher's salary of $200 per year, or "boarded" the teacher or contributed wood and coal for heating. Students paid for their own books.
There were usually about 25 students ranging in age from 6 to 16 years, grades 1 through 7, all in one room. Boys sat on one side of the room, girls on the other in double desks. The building was heated by a pot-bellied stove. The work of bringing in the coal and carrying out the ashes was done by the larger boys. A spring nearby furnished water for the bucket with dipper that stood on a shelf in the vestibule.
Students walked to school from neighboring farms or rode horseback or were brought by buggy. Subjects taught were orthography, reading, writing, English, grammar, geography, arithmetic, history of the United States, and good behavior. At recess, the children played horseshoes, baseball, tag, marbles, and hockey. Every Friday afternoon there were recitations and a spelling bee.
