Marx's Atheism and the Ideal of Self-Realization William O'Meara
Feuerbach 1. This essay begins with a brief review of Marx's evaluation of Hegel and Feuerbach's understanding of God, focusing upon the human as a self-creator, not as created by God. The essay then turns to Peter Ehlen's evaluation in which he argues that Marx's concept of the human being as a self creator who transforms both the world and the self through labor has overemphasized the role of labor in creating objects for human usage and that Marx has neglected the self's relationship with others. The essay argues against Ehlen, drawing upon both the early and later Marx to emphasize the full and free development of the individual in relationship with others. 2. Marx evaluated Hegel's concept of Geist , of Divine Spirit, as partly false and partly true. What was false was that the Divine Spirit actually exists and that its potentialities of full rational understanding and freedom were being realized through the labor of abstract knowledge in Hegel's philosophy. What was true was that the human being's potential for rational understanding and freedom developed through human labor, social relationships, and language. Marx followed Feuerbach's evaluation of Hegel's concept of Geist Geist was a symbol, not of a real Divine Spirit, but of the ideal development of the human potentials of rationality and freedom.

Seminar on Self Constructs (EDS 771G)
Week 2 - William James on the Self
Division of Educational Studies - Emory University

1. It is not difficult to become captivated by James' conception of "self as knower and self as known." After all, the distinction of self in terms of I and me is in some fashion common-sensical ("I was talking to myself yesterday and . . . "). On other levels it is also charming and amusing. However, Bandura (in press) has pointed out that "reflecting on one's own functioning entails shifting the perspective of the same agent rather than reifying different internal agents or selves regulating each other." Bandura argues that people think, act, and reflect on their actions, but it is the one and the same person who is doing the thinking and later evaluating the adequacy of one's knowledge, thinking skills, and action strategies. The shift in perspective does not transform one from an agent to an object as the dualist view of the self would lead one to believe. One is just as much an agent reflecting on one's experiences as in executing courses of action. Rather than splitting the self into object and agent, in self-reflection individuals are simultaneously agent and object. James suggests that "the total self of me, being as it were

The album's eight tracks, a mix of originals and covers, exude a feeling of quiet melancholy, the atmosphere that reigns when you're gently, sadly walking through the world watching other people and their lives while pondering your own, considering major changes. That constant consideration brings with it feelings of uneasiness and anxiety, anticipation and loneliness. Hindle's words trap those feelings in mid-air, making them as clear as they can be. Take these lyrics from the first track, "Down and Able", an example, as he paints a portrait of stillness: "Four weeks seem endless when you're stuck in the first one / And now it's four in the morning, it feels like the light will never come." Each song's beginning offers the sense that the narrator's finding himself at a pivotal place in his life, that so much more has come before than us listeners can know (more heartbreak, more joy, more complexities, more

Self-Healing, Patents, and Placebos:
Pharmaceutical Era , February 1889
A model pharmacy from the late nineteenth century
However fashionable psychosomatic medicine became, it was by no means the only way Americans pursued their interest in the relationship between emotions and disease. A long-standing tradition of mental self-help, not directed by physicians and concentrating on overt and positive rather than covert and negative feelings, began in the late nineteenth century and was still strong in the 1950s and 1960s. This tradition had consistently focused attention on proactive ways people could become more positive and optimistic about life, master their moods, and fix their physical ills without taking medications. People could align their thoughts and constructively adjust their attitudes. Because mind and body were assumed to be closely interconnected - as physician and Declaration-of-Independence-signer Benjamin Rush had clearly indicated in 1811it was taken for granted that harmonizing one's emotions in a positive way would, unquestionably, improve one's physical well-being.

Fort William
Sleeps 2+1
Loch View has a wonderful location on the West Coast about 37 miles north of Oban and 10 miles south of Fort William with a stunning view right out across Loch Linnhe to the hills of Appin and Morvern and the distant Island of Mull. It is a completely self-contained first-floor flat (with its own private entrance) within the former 'Manse of Glenrigh' which was once the home of the 'missionary' of the old Church of Cuilcheanna whose ruins remain within the beautiful Manse gardens. Tenants can enjoy the peace of these private gardens (furniture) if they can resist the temptation of the very many attractions roundabout because, apart from the shops, museums, sporting facilities, hotels, restaurants, etc., in Onich and nearby Fort William, there is a car-ferry nearby which takes you across to The Ardnamurchan Peninsula with its famous scenery and abundant wildlife, while further up to the west there is 'the Road to the Isles' and Skye; and to the east, the chair-lift up Ben Nevis (for summer viewing and winter-skiing) and famous Loch Ness and its Monster Museum. Comfortably furnished, partially double-glazed and well-heated, Loch View makes an excellent home for all year occupation.

    MAIN MENU
    APPENDIX 1:
    Account of the setting up of self-government in A.D. 1200
    [translated from Latin] On Thursday following the festival of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the second year of the reign of King John [29 June] , the whole town of the borough of Ipswich gathered in the churchyard of St. Mary at Tower to elect two bailiffs and four coroners for the town, according to the specifications of the charter of the aforesaid lord King, which that king recently granted to the the borough. On which day the burgesses, by common assent and with one voice, elected two upright and law-abiding men of their town, viz., John fitz Norman and William de Beaumes, who were sworn to the administration of the ballivalty of the town and that they shall behave well and faithfully to both poor and rich. They also unanimously elected on that day four coroners, viz. John fitz Norman, William de Beaumes, Philip de Porta, and Roger Lew, who were sworn to the administration of pleas of the crown and to doing other things which concern the crown in the borough, and to supervise the bailiffs in the just and legal treatment of poor as well as rich. On the same day it was ordained by common counsel of the town that henceforth there ought to be in the borough twelve sworn capital portmen, such as there are in other free boroughs of England, and that they should have full power on behalf of themselves and the whole town to govern and maintain the borough and all its liberties, and to render judgements of the town; and also to take care of, ordain and do in the borough whatever may need to be done to maintain the status and reputation of the town. And on this matter the bailiffs and coroners declared that the whole town should come to the churchyard on Sunday following the festival of the Apostles Peter and Paul, to elect 12 capital portmen, according to the intent of this ordinance.

    1. Dear Lord! accept a sinful heart,
    Which of itself complains,
    And mourns, with much and frequent smart,
    The evil it contains. 2 There fiery seeds of anger lurk,
    Which often hurt my frame;
    And wait but for the tempter's work,
    To fan them to a flame. 3 Legality holds out a bribe
    To purchase life from thee;
    And discontent would fain prescribe How thou shalt deal with me. 4 While unbelief withstands thy grace, And puts the mercy by; Presumption, with a brow of brass, Says, "Give me, or I die." 5 How eager are my thoughts to roam In quest of what they love! But, ah! when duty calls them home, How heavily they move! 6 Oh, cleanse me in a Saviour's blood, Transform me by thy pow'r, And make me thy belov'd abode, And let me rove no more. "Since 1948"
    Gene Wolfe once said that being an only child whose parents are dead is like being the sole survivor of drowned Atlantis. There was a whole civilization there, an entire continent, but it's gone. And you alone remember. That's my story too, my father having died when I was six, my mother when I was eighteen. Brian Aldiss believes that if you look at the life of any novelist, you'll find an early traumatic break, and mine seems no exception.
    I was born on the coast of South Carolina, where my parents liked to vacation when there was almost nothing there at all. My father was in some sort of middle management position in a large and growing construction company. They'd built some of the Oak Ridge atomic facilities, and paranoiac legends of "security" at Oak Ridge were part of our family culture. There was a cigar-box full of strange-looking ID badges he'd worn there. But he'd done well at Oak Ridge, evidently, and so had the company he worked for, and in the postwar South they were busy building entire red brick Levittown-style suburbs. We moved a lot, following these projects, and he was frequently away, scouting for new ones.
    It was a world of early television, a new Oldsmobile with crazy rocket-ship styling, toys with science fiction themes. Then my father went off on one more business trip. He never came back. He choked on something in a restaurant, the Heimlich maneuver hadn't been discovered yet, and everything changed.
