Self-Portrait
William Merritt Chase,

c. 1884, pastel on paper, 17 1/4 x 13 1/2 (43.8 x 34.3), Collection of Margaret and Raymond Horowitz With Robert Blum and J. Carroll Beckwith, William Merritt Chase was a founding member of the Society of American Painters in Pastel. His self-portrait was one of the sixteen pastels he showed in the Society's first exhibition at W. P. Moore's Gallery in New York in 1884; it bears on its surface the two P's that formed the Society's monogram. It is indeed a self-portrait. Listed in the catalogue simply as Portrait, it was described in reviews as "a clever portrait of himself" and "a portrait of the gentleman himself," and a "characteristic autograph portrait." What is more, the stiff brushy hair, gravity-defying moustache, goatee, and long, sharp nose all so closely resemble the same traits of appearance in J. Carroll Beckwith's nearly contemporary portrait of Chase, not to mention the almost palpable aura of style both images exude, that there can be no doubt that they depict the same person. Pastel was part of the explosion of interest in new mediums one that included watercolor, wood engraving, and etching as well that occurred in America in the years following the Civil War. Until then pastel was particularly little used by American artists and largely unfamiliar to the American public, but in the hands of the Pastel Society artists, it was used with astonishing vigor and originality.

67. ISS: Human Personality: The Subliminal Self: Sir William Barrett
Human Personality The Subliminal self. Sir william Barrett FRS -. What apiece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty . . .
http://www.survivalafterdeath.org/articles/barrett/personality.htm
ARTICLES Sir William Barrett FRS Professor of Physics at the Royal College of Science for Dublin from 1873-1910 and one of the distinguished early psychical researchers. In fact, it was Barrett who first initiated the founding of both the American and British Society for Psychical Research. Human Personality: The Subliminal Self - Sir William Barrett FRS - "What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty . . . in apprehension how like a god!"
Hamlet II., 2. OUR CONSCIOUSNESS is the fundamental fact, the most real thing, of which we are aware, and although it consists of a succession of states of mind, no two of which are exactly alike, it is nevertheless combined into a continuous personal identity which we call "ourself." Even when there are interruptions of our self-consciousness, as in sleep, we recognise the self that wakes up in the morning as the same self that went to sleep overnight. So also throughout our life we are conscious of the same identity, the same self, albeit the whole material of body, brain and sensory organs has been repeatedly swept away and renewed. Hence our personality is not a mere bundle of loose sensations: no succession of states of mind, no series of thoughts or feelings can fuse themselves into a single resultant consciousness, with a knowledge and memory of all the other states.

Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq wormatwork@ To Thine Own Self Be True William Shakespeare Well, not sure I think it's the best advice anyone ever got but when I reread the poem all these years later, I realised its a whole list of platitudes :). Still sounds like mighty grand advice, doesnt it? p.s. I dont think I need to add any biographical information for this one! Seema [Martin adds] The phrases "to thine own self be true" and "neither a borrower nor a lender be" have (deservedly) made their way into the language. Another famous set of precepts cast into poetic form is Kipling's "If", Poem #271 And in a more humorous vein, Gilbert's "Things are seldom what they seem" duet from "HMS Pinafore" is a magnificent send up of the genre, including the immortal line Though I'm anything but clever I could talk like that forever http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/pinafore/web_opera/pn14.html

William Bradford - Libertarian Find out YOUR W illiam (R.W., Bill) Bradford is founder and editor of Liberty magazine, one of the preeminent publications of the libertarian movement. In its first issue in July 1987, Bradford said Liberty magazine would be "a journal by libertarians for libertarians, a journal with the space and inclination to discuss issues that interest libertarians, written from an unapologetically libertarian perspective." The publication will offer "lively, provocative analysis," he said, about the intellectual roots of libertarianism, cultural and historical issues from a pro-liberty perspective, and the history of the libertarian movement. Since its founding, the monthly magazine (circulation: about 10,000) has covered a broad variety of topics from current events to Ayn Rand; from the Libertarian Party to book reviews; from Alcoholics Anonymous to the War on Terror. You are in National Portrait Gallery Education Page 1 William Hogarth's self-portrait
William Hogarth was interested in balance and proportion in his pictures. This is shown very clearly in his self-portrait. Look at the original picture carefully - you will need to do the measuring activities using the sketch of the picture on page 2. All the measurements are approximate, so make your measurements to the nearest centimetre. Your sketch of the picture is approximately square, each side being 21 cm long. The edges of the paper are the edges of the picture - the letters show points on the edge of the picture (your printer won't print right to the edge but you need to measure from the edge, not where the letter is printed). Self-portrait
by William Hogarth, oil on canvas, circa 1757
Hogarth has painted something bright and shiny half way across his self-portrait, at the level of his feet - what is it? Now look at the diagonals, from corner to corner of the self-portrait - what has Hogarth put approximately in the middle of the picture?
