William Kilpatrick Seventeen years ago in Psychological Seduction I wrote about the dangers of mixing psychology with religious faith. Such a mixing, I cautioned, would result in a dilution of faith. Six years before that, Paul Vitz had made a similar point in Psychology as Religion : psychology, he wrote, had become a substitute for faith—a new religion encouraging a cult of self–worship. We both emphasized that this psychological faith, although it bore a surface resemblance to Christianity, was incompatible with, indeed, deeply hostile to, Christian faith. Psychology as faith has proven to be a sturdy creed—almost all of the criticisms we made then could be made today. The concepts of popular psychology are still being blended with Christian faith, and confusion still abounds. The attraction to psychology is not, of course, confined to the area of religion. The assumptions and techniques of psychology and therapy have found their way into business, schools, families, popular entertainment, and even the courts—so much so that it has become common to speak of our society as a "therapeutic culture." As long ago as 1966, Philip Rieff’s book The Triumph of the Therapeutic

William H. Johnson was one of the foremost African American artists of his generation. He lived and worked in New York, France and Denmark, and his style and subject matter were as wide ranging as his travels. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he was strongly influenced by the Expressionists.
"....Johnson extended [the] inquiry into [his] ancestry and self to his art, as seen in several fascinating self-portraits..."
"...Johnson's intense colors and expressive painting technique catapult his self image into a modern aesthetic, one riddled with formal dichotomies and underlying emotions. Light years ahead of those somber self-portraits that lined the halls of the National Academy of Design and other American institutions, this introspective view....illustrates the talent behind the artist's demand for greater respect and recognition...."

We often take for granted some of the modern conveniences that surround us, fill our homes, and make our lives better. I know that I do.
I came across an article from H.L. Mencken on A Neglected Anniversary , which looks at 75 years of bathtubs in the United States.
If not for the eccentricities of a wealthy businessman in Cincinnati in 1942, hygiene would have a completely different complexion in the USA.

Christian Alienation
Hearing the news that a group of Christians were looking to join together to take over a US state to fulfill a plan to leave the governance of the United States, I got a little worried that they might target the state I live in. It's the second smallest state in the United States, and a possible destination for people who think that this is a good model for overthrowing government. The Free State Project had a similar plan in place last year, and my state was one of its potential targets.
Fortunately, they had decided upon South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi as locations to

The Principles of Psychology William James (1890) CHAPTER X. The Consciousness of Self. Let us begin with the Self in its widest acceptation, and follow it up to its most delicate and subtle form, advancing from the study of the empirical, as the Germans call it, to that of the pure, Ego. The Empirical Self or Me. The Empirical Self of each of us is all that he is tempted to call by the name of me . But it is clear that between what a man calls me and what he simply calls mine the line is difficult to draw. We feel and act about certain things that are ours very much as we feel and act about ourselves. Our fame, our children, the work of our hands, may be as dear to us as our bodies are, and arouse the same feelings and the same acts of reprisal if attacked. And our bodies themselves, are they simply ours, or are they us ? Certainly men have been ready to disown their very bodies and to regard them as mere vestures, or even as prisons of clay from which they should some day be glad to escape. We see then that we are dealing with a fluctuating material. The same object being sometimes treated as a part of me, at other times as simply mine, and then again as if I had nothing to do with it at all.

William Gunderson
Background Current and/or past roles in the area of work and career include designer of experiments in research psychology, advertising and corporate assignment photographer in San Francisco, Director Of Operations in start-up ventures, skydive instructor, patent holder and product developer, start-up venture helmsman. William now assists businesses, as opportunities arise, with product development, marketing and vision not through a reiteration of conventional wisdom which tends to segment business into parts, but rather by re-unifying the organization into a whole. This includes, amongst other things, changing the concept of "employee" to that of "co-creator", teaching the principles of reality creation and the application of metaphysical truths to business. In addition, he teaches metaphysical principles through his writings, private counseling and small groups. Roots Of His Perspective
William eventually came to understand that there is an immense need and important role for both the synthesizer and the specialist and has spent no small effort over the years advancing that truth. He has come to understand that the effort of showing others the value of the overview perspective was part of the unfolding of his own individual abilities. He now teaches that each of us has a unique array of talents and abilities that we are to use for the advancement of good in our world. And that in so doing, we will find great joy in our lives and experience success and abundance. Alas, discovering our talents, who we are and finding the place where we can best contribute, often is the challenge for many of us. But he also teaches that, from a more cosmic perspective, this pursuit of discovering ourselves is all part of the larger scheme of life.

Howell Living History Farm
101 Hunter Rd.
Titusville, NJ 08560
This sprawling farmland has been worked for more than 250 years, since 1732 when Joseph Phillips purchased 125 acres from landholder, William Bryant. The Mercer County Park Commission restored the farm to its 1900-1910 appearance, and since 1984 it has been a wonderful resource for families and groups to experience turn-of-the-century farming. A Self-Guided Tour takes about an hour and a half, inspecting some thirty unique features. Begin in the Parking/Picnic area, where the day's farming activities are posted. Then venture past the Snake Fence into the 1900 farm. See the Beehives with their mouseguards and pass the Round Pasture to the North Crop Fields. Horses, sheep, groundhogs, geese and ducks will be seen in the pasture, and one-third of the fields are cropped and cultivated in 1900's fashion. Continue to the Sheep Barn, Chicken House, Main Barn, Hog Pasture, Apple Orchard, Farmhouse, Ice House, and other areas to get all the sights, sounds and smells of farming the old way. It's fun and educational, and perfect for people of all ages. Howell Farm offers a full calendar of events for families. Just a few of the possible activities include Maple Sugaring, Workhorse Rides, Crafts Workshops, Wagon Tours, Hayrides, Sheep Shearing, Cornhusking, and even Plowing Matches. Much more goes on here, and a calendar is free for the asking. For those who live nearby, The Farmlife Program offers a great opportunity to introduce children to the farming life.

The problem of self-esteem
As presented in Inventive personality type , Annie Reich defined self-esteem as "the expression of discrepancy or harmony between self-representation and the wishful concept of the self." William James gave a similar definition in Chapter 10 of his The Principles of Psychology , and formulated it as, "Self-esteem = Success / Pretensions." James (1890) viewed self-esteem as an evaluative process; he argued that self-esteem, at its simplest, could be measured as the ratio of a person's successes to his or her pretensions. Pretensions are viewed as goals, purposes, or aims, whereas successes constitute the perception of the attainment of those goals. As people attain more of their pretensions, the ratio grows larger and self-esteem becomes correspondingly stronger. Pretensions also add a vulnerability component to self-esteem in that these are the areas where the individual is proposed to be most competent. If he or she comes up short in the percerption of goal-attainment, or in comparison with others in the same pretension arena, self-esteem suffers. A realization of shortcomings in an area that was not important to the individual, however, would not result in a devaluation of personal worth (Bernet et al., 1993, pg. 141). The following is an excerpt from James's discussion of the problem of self-esteem: Rivalry and Conflict of the Different Selves.
