50. Close-Up 11/02
The Foundling by rebecca seiferle. Note rebecca seiferle will be visiting from NewMexico to read and conduct a workshop for Tebot Bach on November 15 and 16.

Ready For Their Close-Up: Two Poems
In the American Heritage dictionary close-up is defined as: 1. A photograph or a film or television shot in which the subject is tightly framed and shown at a relatively large scale. 2. An intimate view or description. The Poetix poetry sector is edited by Suzanne Lummis
The Foundling by Rebecca Seiferle
Erles by Dick Barnes
The following poems rise from some close observation of, or interaction with, the natural world, then each achieves a stunning leap beyond the day-to-day world. And yet – in the end – both have everything to do with the lives of ordinary men and women. In the last several months I've come upon just one poem that aroused in me a kind of grief, and I was set to wondering why it troubled my imagination. After all I don't consider myself an emotional push-over in regards to poetry; I've heard so many, read so many, that I've become somewhat inured to poetry's way of working. The little composition that got under my relatively thick skin was Rebecca Seiferle's The Foundling , which links the mundane brutalities of this life and the paranormal, the fate of a baby animal and the destiny of a human child.

Book of the Month March 2004 The Black Heralds (translated by Rebecca Seiferle)
(Copper Canyon Press, Port Townsend, WA, 2003. 197pp, pb, $16.00. ISBN 1-55659-199-3). The janus-like nature of Vallejo's first collection has often attracted comment. This, and the fact that his subsequent volume, Trilce , is one of the greatest masterworks of 20th Century hispanophone poetry, has tended to obscure the intrinsic qualities of the earlier book. The poet was 26 when Los heraldos negros Trilce and also the Spanish literary vanguardia in general. The translator here, Rebecca Seiferle, makes a good case for Vallejo's subversive procedures in this work, and is quite combative in her introduction about the poet's former translators and their appropriation of him for their own poetic ends. Those translators however were mainly involved in Trilce and the posthumous poems usually referred to collectively as the Poemas humanos . In the case of The Black Heralds The Poet to His Beloved El poeta a su amada Beloved, tonight you've been crucified

There are countless versions of the Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair ), a slim book which dates from 1923-4, and the W S Merwin version from the 1960s is as good as any I've seen. There is a Penguin paperback edition in the UK. In any event, do ensure you get a bilingual version. Neruda's highly readable memoir I confess that I have lived
