Thirty Years of Tanglewood photography Walter Scott's career in photography has spanned 45 years and both coasts. In California, at the Institute of Fine Arts he worked under Dorothea Lang and Morley Baer. Later, as an instructor, he worked with Ansel Adams at the workshops in Yosemite. A resident of Massachusetts since 1964, he became the only artist to be asked by Norman Rockwell to participate in a dual gallery showing of their respective works. In 1974, he became the official photographer for Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony's summer home, and it is in those thousands of photographs of musicians, singers and conductors that his work is best known to Boston audiences.

Loch Katrine Steamer - Sir Walter Scott
Loch Katrine Steamship Sir Walter Scott is a major attraction to visitors in the Trossachs but few realise the story behind the old steam ship which has plied these waters for over 100 years. 'Sir Walter Scott’ is named after the 19th Century poet who wrote "The Lady of the Lake" and is the last of a series of ships to ply the loch. The story goes that the first steamer on Loch Katrine was sent to the bottom by the sailors who had been employed to row the previous craft! She is 110 feet long, 19 feet wide and weighs 115 tons, and has sailed the waters of Loch Katrine since 1900. S.S. Sir Walter Scott was built by Denny Bros Ltd at Dumbarton on the River Clyde, transported by barge up Loch Lomond and then dragged by horse-drawn cart up the unbelievably steep hill from Inversnaid and then overland to Stronachlachar at the west end of Loch Katrine where she was re-assembled and launched. She still has the original 3-cylinder triple expansion engine and has two locomotive-type boilers. The vessel has a crew of five, and is the only surviving screw steamer in regular passenger service in Scotland. The boilers are fired by coke and the ash is emptied ashore daily to minimise any risk of pollution to the loch Every winter the old girl is taken out of the water for maintenance before being re-floated in time for the start of the visitor season

http://www.blupete.com/Literature/Biographies/Literary/Scott.htm
Sir Walter Scott
Scott, the "great romancer," was trained as a lawyer. Steeped in the traditions and customs of the Scottish highlands, Scott's novels are backdropped with the events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and set with scenes laid out in remote and uncultivated districts. His novels are filled with superstitious and mannerly characters, entangled with the intrigues of war, religion, and politics. Though Scott wrote verse he is at his best when writing prose. Scott "told his story in incident, and not in reflection or in adjective." Scott discovered that, indeed, facts are better than fiction; he wrote of events from real life and not "the fine-spun cobwebs of the brain." Scott's writings were politically based, he equated the mobs of the previous centuries to the "modern rabble" of his day, those who were rising up against tradition and custom such as the mobs of the French Revolution. He backed his friends who had a "horror of all reform, civil, political or religious." During his time he was a most popular figure with numerous readers and admirers, "quarrelling which of his novels is the best, opposing character to character, quoting passage against passage." William Hazlitt thought Scott to be a genius, but one "who took the wrong side and defended it by unfair means."

Sir Walter Scott's Visit To Ireland
"The Dublin Penny Journal", December 15, 1832. The general life of Sir Walter Scott, does not properly come within the objects of our Journal, and besides must be already familiar to most of our readers; but there is one portion of it which belongs peculiarly to our country, and which has been but little noticed hitherto - his first and only visit to Ireland, in the summer of 1825. That he had long viewed Ireland with feelings of considerable interest, there can be little doubt; deeply engaged in antiquarian research, his attention could hardly have failed to be arrested by her well known claim to the highest antiquity, and still further by the connexion of her ancient history with that of Scotland. He had, besides, many old and valued friends here, who had long and urgently solicited him to visit them; and at length his son, (the present Sir Walter Scott,) to whom he was much attached, being quartered in Dublin with his regiment, the 15th Hussars, affording an additional inducement, on the 14th July, 1825, Scott arrived accompanied by Mr. Lockhart, his son-in-law, and his daughter, Miss Scott. Our national poet, Moore, was expected in Dublin about this time; but he did not arrive during Scott's stay. Mr. Hallam, the talented historian of the " Middle Ages," was in Ireland, but was just at that time engaged in a tour through some of the northern counties. Sir Humphrey Davy and the learned Dr. Adam Clarke, were indeed here, but the former appears to have been engaged with the promotion of his brother's election to the office of Professor of Chemistry to the Dublin Society, about which he had come from England, and the latter with the performance of his clerical functions among the Society of Methodists, to which he belonged, and accordingly neither of them appear to have met Scott in society during the short period of his sojourn in this country.
