    IVANHOE
A ROMANCE Walter Scott INTRODUCTION TO IVANHOE Now fitted the halter, now traversed the cart,
And often took leave, but seemed loath to depart!* [*] The motto alludes to the Author returning to the stage repeatedly after having taken leave.
Prior. `` `Reverse the spell,' he cries, 'And let it fairly now suffice,
The gambol has been shown.' '' Nothing can be more dangerous for the fame of a professor of the fine arts, than to permit (if he can possibly prevent it) the character of a mannerist to be attached to him, or that he should be supposed capable of success only in a particular and limited style. The public are, in general, very ready to adopt the opinion, that he who has pleased them in one peculiar mode of composition, is, by means of that very talent, rendered incapable of venturing upon other subjects. The effect of this disinclination, on the part of the public, towards the artificers of their pleasures, when they attempt to enlarge their means of amusing, may be seen in the censures usually passed by vulgar criticism upon actors or artists who venture to change the character of their efforts, that, in so doing, they may enlarge the scale of their art. There is some justice in this opinion, as there always is in such as attain general currency. It may often happen on the stage, that an actor, by possessing in a preeminent degree the external qualities necessary to give effect to comedy, may be deprived of the right to aspire to tragic excellence; and in painting or literary composition, an artist or poet may be master exclusively of modes of thought, and powers of expression, which confine him to a single course of subjects. But much more frequently the same capacity which carries a man to popularity in one department will obtain for him success in another, and that must be more particularly the case in literary composition, than either in acting or painting, because the adventurer in that department is not impeded in his exertions by any peculiarity of features, or conformation of person, proper for particular parts, or, by any peculiar mechanical habits of using the pencil, limited to a particular class of subjects.

    Walter Scott
Walter Scott was born in 1771 in Edinburgh, one of twelve children of a solicitor. His interest in Scottish legends and history began early, when he lived on the Borders with his grandparents. He attended Edinburgh University, studying arts and law, and by the age of sixteen was already collecting and translating old ballads. He followed his father’s career, and, in 1797, married Margaret Charlotte Charpentier. Scott’s first major work, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, appeared in 1802-03. He gained fame as a poet with the publication of The Lay of the Last Minstrel in 1805, which made him the most popular writer of the period. He followed its success by the poems Marmion, a historical romance, The Lady of the Lake, and The Lord of the Isles. The debts Scott inherited from his friend James Ballantyne, with whom he had started a publishing business, forced him to become very prolific in order to earn money. Through the 1810’s, Scott published many historical novels annonymously, such as Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian, Rob Roy, and Ivanhoe, for which he is probably best remembered. His influence on later writers was profound. He was the first to use the historical novel genre, and inspired many major authors in the second half of the nineteenth century. Walter Scott was created a baronet in 1820, and died September 21, 1832, having paid all his debts with the profits from his writing.

Ashestiel, Ettrick Forest NOVEMBER'S sky is chill and drear, November's leaf is red and sear: Late, gazing down the steepy linn That hems our little garden in, Low in its dark and narrow glen, You scarce the rivulet might ken, So thick the tangled greenwood grew, So feeble trilled the streamlet through; Now, murmuring hoarse, and frequent seen Through bush and brier, no longer green, An angry brook, it sweeps the glade, Brawls over rock and wild cascade, And, foaming brown with double speed, Hurries its waters to the Tweed. No longer autumn's glowing red Upon our Forest hills is shed; No more, beneath the evening beam

Scott was born on August 15, 1771, in Edinburgh as the son of a solicitor Walter Scott and Anne, a daughter of professor of medicine. An early illness left him lame in the right leg, but he grew up to be a man over six feet and great physical endurance. Scott's interest in the old Border tales and ballads had early been awakened, and he devoted much of his leisure to the exploration of the Border country. He attended Edinburgh High School and studied at Edinburgh University arts and law. Scott was apprenticed to his father in 1786 and in 1792 he was called to the bar. In 1799 he was appointed sheriff depute of the county of Selkirk. In 1797 Scott married Margaret Charlotte Charpenter. They had five children.

    Ivanhoe
Search all of Ivanhoe The epitome of the chivalric novel, Ivanhoe sweeps readers into Medieval England and the lives of a memorable cast of characters. Ivanhoe, a trusted ally of Richard-the-Lion-Hearted, returns from the Crusades to reclaim the inheritance his father denied him. Rebecca, a vibrant, beautiful Jewish woman is defended by Ivanhoe against a charge of witchcraftbut it is Lady Rowena who is Ivanhoe's true love. The wicked Prince John plots to usurp England's throne, but two of the most popular heroes in all of English literature, Richard-the-Lion-Hearted and the well-loved famous outlaw, Robin Hood, team up to defeat the Normans and reagain the castle. The success of this novel lies with Scott's skillful blend of historic reality, chivalric romance, and high adventure.

User Comments and Reviews: Anonymous No Subject February 21st, 2004 Rating: 8.0000 I respectfully disagree with all those who say that the characters were flat, one-dimensional and uninteresting. I saw a lot of personality come through with every one of them, through his/her appearance, demeanor, circumstances, etc. Brian de Bois-Guilbert was no hero to me, rather a villianous sort with conflicting feelings. I interpreted his demise as due to apoplexy (recall that he is flushed with fury at Ivanhoe's reminding him of his previous two defeats in combat). I liked all the characters for different reasons, but I mainly felt that they are more complex than some people here give them credit for. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in classic literature. Sorry, but in my humble opinion, it beats the pants off anything Shakespeare wrote (always thought Shakespeare has been a bit over-rated, anyway).
