Walter Scott
Walter Scott was born in 1771 in Edinburgh, one of twelve children of a solicitor. His interest in Scottish legends and history began early, when he lived on the Borders with his grandparents. He attended Edinburgh University, studying arts and law, and by the age of sixteen was already collecting and translating old ballads. He followed his father’s career, and, in 1797, married Margaret Charlotte Charpentier. Scott’s first major work, Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border, appeared in 1802-03. He gained fame as a poet with the publication of The Lay of the Last Minstrel in 1805, which made him the most popular writer of the period. He followed its success by the poems Marmion, a historical romance, The Lady of the Lake, and The Lord of the Isles. The debts Scott inherited from his friend James Ballantyne, with whom he had started a publishing business, forced him to become very prolific in order to earn money. Through the 1810’s, Scott published many historical novels annonymously, such as Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian, Rob Roy, and Ivanhoe, for which he is probably best remembered. His influence on later writers was profound. He was the first to use the historical novel genre, and inspired many major authors in the second half of the nineteenth century. Walter Scott was created a baronet in 1820, and died September 21, 1832, having paid all his debts with the profits from his writing.

Sir Walter Scott was a native of Edinburgh, being educated in the city's High School and University. He was a lawyer by profession and eventually became a Sheriff-Depute (a local judge) in Selkirkshire. Although he was eventually to reach his chief fame as a novelist whose work was read throughout Europe the early part of his literary life was largely devoted to the translation of German works and to poetry. Much of the latter was romantic in nature and concerned with the traditions of the Scottish-English border. In 1802-3 he published his three volume Ministrelsy of the Scottish Border and in 1805 his first considerable original work The Lay of the last Minstrel. However, despite his success he refused the offer of the poet-laureateship and eventually found his international fame as a poet eclipsed by that of Byron.
It was only in his mid-40s that he eventually turned to the novel with the publication in 1814 of Waverley, a book which gave its name to a whole series of subsequent works, some of the most successful of which, like Waverley itself dealt with the two Scottish Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 against the new Hanoverian kings of Great Britain. while others were concerned with earlier historical periods such as the Scottish religious wars and with the history of Edinburgh.

The Lay of the Last Minstrel
by Sir Walter Scott
To The Right Honourable
Charles Earl of Dalkeith
This Poem Is Inscribed By The Author.
    Preface
The Poem, now offered to the Public, is intended to illustrate the customs and manners which anciently prevailed on the Borders of England and Scotland. The inhabitants living in a state partly pastoral and partly warlike, and combining habits of constant depredation with the influence of a rude spririt of chivalry, were often engaged in scenes highly susceptible of poetical ornament. As the description of scenery and manners was more the object of the Author than a combined and regular narrative, the plan of the Ancient Metrical Romance was adopted, which allows greter latitude, in this respect, than would be consistent with the dignity of a regular Poem. The same model offered other faculties, as it permits an occasional alteration of measure, which, in some degree, authorizes the change of rhythm in the text. The machinery, also, adopted from popular belief, would have seemed puerile in a Poem which did not partake of the rudeness of the old Ballad, or Metrical Romance. For these reasons, the Poem was put into the mouth of an ancient Minstrel, the last of the race, who, as he is supposed to have survived the Revolution, might have caught somewhat of the refinement of modern poetry, without losing the simplicity of his original model. The date of the Tale itself is about the middle of the sixteenth century, when most of the personages actually flourished. The time occupied by the action is Three Nights and Three Days.

INTRODUCTION
Perhaps the most outstanding, and numerous, of the great Scottish Border Families was that of Scott. Uchtred, son of Scot, lived in the first half of the 12th century, and from his two sons the numerous Scott branches began. The Scotts of BUCCLEUCH, whose Dukedom dates from 1673, ended in Anne, who married James, Duke of Monmouth, natural son of Charles II, who was beheaded for rebelling against his uncle, James II. From this marriage comes the line of the later Dukes of Buccleuch and Queensberry. From the line of Harden originating in the 14th century, sprang one of Scotland's greatest men: Sir Walter Scott of Abbotsford. Like their neighbours, the Scotts were turbulent, cunning, courageous and filled with energy. The gathering place of the Families in time of war was Bellendean, on Borthwick Water. When the fierce cry of 'A Bellendaine!' was heard on the Border, men knew that the Scotts were 'out'. Much of the following information is taken from Anderson's book, Vol. 1, p.448, which he introduces thusly: "There is (1871) in the possession of the present Lord Polwarth, who is himself a noble branch of the Scotts, a genealogical table, prepared by and holograph of Sir Walter Scott, of Abbotsford, Bart., in which he traces the origin and descent of this family..."

Sir Walter Scott
Scottish Novelist and Poet Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!
Sir Walter Scott
was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott created and popularized historical novels in a series called the Waverley Novels. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Central themes of many of Scott's novels are about conflicts between opposing cultures. Ivanhoe (1791) is about war between Normans and Saxons. The Talisman (1825) is about conflict between Christians and Muslims. His novels about Scottish history deal with clashes between the new English culture and the old Scottish. Scott's other great novels include "Old Mortality" (1816), "The Heart of Midlothian" (1819), and "St Ronan's Well" (1824). His Waverley series includes "Rob Roy" (1817), "A Legend of Montrose" (1819), and "Quentin Dunward" (1823).

Scott was born on August 15, 1771, in Edinburgh as the son of a solicitor Walter Scott and Anne, a daughter of professor of medicine. An early illness left him lame in the right leg, but he grew up to be a man over six feet and great physical endurance. Scott's interest in the old Border tales and ballads had early been awakened, and he devoted much of his leisure to the exploration of the Border country. He attended Edinburgh High School and studied at Edinburgh University arts and law. Scott was apprenticed to his father in 1786 and in 1792 he was called to the bar. In 1799 he was appointed sheriff depute of the county of Selkirk. In 1797 Scott married Margaret Charlotte Charpenter. They had five children.
In 1802-03 Scott's first major work, Minstrelsy Of The Scottish Border appeared. As a poet Scott rose into fame with the publication of

36. MARIA EDGEWORTH ON SCOTT
Entry from Andrew Monnickendam's website regarding the relationship between these writers.
http://seneca.uab.es/SCOTT/MARIAEDG.HTM
EDGEWORTH ON SCOTT
In October 1814, Maria Edgeworth wrote a letter to James Ballantyne which was passed on to the author of Waverley. The fact that the letter carried the motto "Aut Scotus, aut Diabolus" (Scott or the Devil) and that Ballantyne's reply concludes with information about Scott's future publication indicates that the pretence of anonymity just didn't matter. She dislikes the interpolations but approves of the 'beautiful descriptions of nature', and above all of the characterisations of 'the various gradations of Scotch feudal character'. Little mention is made of Rose and less of Waverley himself. It is clearly the peripheral which interests her. Scott and Maria Edgeworth corresponded till 1830 on almost every subject: on literature, on the fate of the poor, on domestic, intimate matters and on the visits each made to the other's country. Lockhart describes the visit made to Abbotsford like this: Vol. IV, 120 The next month - August 1823 - was one of the happiest in Scott's life. Never did I see a brighter day at Abbotsford than that on which Miss Edgeworth first arrived there- never can I forget her look and accent when she was received by him at his archway, and exclaimed, 'Everything about you is exactly what one ought to have wit enough to dream'. What is curious is that even though this was a remarkable event in Scott's life, cementing a firm friendship, Lockhart gets the visit over and done with as soon as possible: a paragraph suffices. Even stranger then, is Lockhart's affirmation, made while dealing with Scott's visit to Edgeworthstown, that
