The Demon Breed
by James H. Schmitz
Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Macdonald, London, 1969; 157 pages serialized as The Tuvela
Analog Science Fiction
January 2002
This is a lovely book. A sensuous, subtle, and high-paced adventure with an engaging heroine and a wealth of interesting creatures in a small space. The novel takes place almost entirely upon a floating atoll on the ocean world of Nandy-Cline: a floatwood drift with its green-shadowed tree-boles and vines and great nests and rookeries; in the sea around the atoll and the sheltered reedy lagoon encircled by the floatwood. An elderly man, Ticos Cay, has been doing pharmaceutical research alone on this floatwood island. He is expecting research scientist Nile Etland to arrive shortly. But before she arrives, Ticos Cay is captured by an advance invasion force of the alien, amphibian Parahuans which has moved secretly into the vast ocean of Nandy-Cline. The Demon Breed opens with Ticos Cay being interrogated by Koll, a Parahuan holding the high rank and condensed physiology of a Great Palach, one of the Everliving: doll-sized, smart, and murderously vicious. Koll is second in command of the Voice of Action in the secret invasion force. He states: "You predicted that one of the so-called Tuvelas would attempt to contact you here."

A Tale of Two Clocks
by James H. Schmitz
Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Torquil / Dodd, Mead;
New York, 1962; 206 pages sometimes reprinted as Legacy March 2002
It was the time of sunrise in Ceyce, the White City, placidly beautiful capital of Maccadon, the University World of the Hub. In the Colonial School's sprawling five-mile complex of buildings and tropical parks, the second student shift was headed for breakfast, while a large part of the fourth shift moved at a more leisurely rate toward their bunks. The school's organized activities were not much affected by the hour, but the big exercise quadrangle was almost deserted for once. Behind the railing of the firing range a young woman stood by herself, gun in hand, waiting for the automatic range monitor to select a new string of targets for release. Agent of Vega to the teenage mentalist Telzey Amberdon and the mentalist witch-girls of The Witches of Karres . Trigger has an advantage over Telzey and the young witches in being of sufficient maturity for romance, and in fact herein she has a couple of romantic entanglements: with Brule Inger, her boyfriend from the earlier story "Harvest Time"; and despite her best intentions, with Heslet Quillan, the tough and quick Intelligence officer we also see in "Lion Loose". A Tale of Two Clocks is an excellent novel. So why does it give an impression of being not quite complete between its own covers?

I've been reading James H. Schmitz's Eternal Frontiers and just enjoying the heck out of it. It's an anthology containing a bunch of short stories and the eponymous short novel, from the 1950s and 1960s. In my opinion, that's the Golden Age of short-form SF. This is the sixth volume of Schmitz's work that the fine folks at Baen have put out. The others have focused on Schmitz's enduring series characters like Telzey Amberdon (a 17-year old law student and psi telepath). In series or out, though, Schmitz's SF is highly entertaining. This reprint series would be, in my estimation, an excellent gift for the Harry Potter reader in your family. Why? Because it has the same appeal: all-ages imaginative storytelling. The seventh and final volume, coming out very soon, I hope, is Schmitz's best-known work, the full-length novel The Witches of Karres Posted by Greg at September 13, 2002 10:16 AM

Reviewed by Steven H Silver The Witches of Karres is an old-fashioned space opera with one major difference. Rather than rely on superscience to achieve victory, the hero, Captain Pausert of Nikkeldepain, finds himself using the mystical powers of the witches of the rogue planet Karres to defeat his enemies. Pausert begins his adventure by rescuing three young girls from slavery. As they escape, he discovers that the sisters are witches of Karres, a legendary planet whose inhabitants seem to have fantastic mental powers. Arriving at his home world, Pausert discovers that his fiancée has left him and he has been declared an outlaw for the events surrounding his rescue of the witches. Pausert and one of the witches, Goth, escape to the far side of the Empire to make their own way in the galaxy. The Witches of Karres stands on its own and has no sequels. Characterization is not an important part of The Witches of Karres The Witches of Karres frequently has the feel of being a Saturday afternoon serial where the protagonists find themselves in progressively worse situations until they finally manage to win through.

Description:
Earth's colonists have spread throughout the cosmos, and have almost divided into two separate species. One is the Swimmers, who have adapted to living in zero-gravity, and regard themselves as the next step in evolution, and those who prefer to live on the surface of a planet as little better than apes. The latter group, the Walkers, are not about to say farewell to the planets they grew up on, and think the Swimmers are not so much advanced as deranged. Crowell, born a Swimmer but now a Walker by choice, is caught in the middle as the two sides seem headed for war. Then he discovers the true cause of the altercation: a hidden alien race moving behind the scenes to provoke a war so that they can pick up the pieces after the two sides have obliterated each other. And if Crowell cannot head off the war and convince both sides of the existence of the real enemy, both branches of the human race may be headed for untimely extinction. Description: "This is the last, and in some ways the best of the Baen re-issue of the Hub Stories. The range of stories is impressive. It starts with The Searcher, one of the best Schmitz stories. The Protagonists, Danestar Gems and Corwin Wergard, are from the Keth Interstellar Agency, which is a recurring character in the tales. By the way, Schmitz gave his characters great names. The searcher of the title is one very unusual and interesting monster with plausible motives. The human protagonists also have to deal with some human gangsters and corrupt U-League officials. The pacing is good, the story is fun and complex, and the resolution works. THE WITCHES OF KARRES by James H. Schmitz
Baen, 1966 While on a trading missing trying to earn enough money to pay off his debts and earn the hand of IIlyla, Captain Pausert stumbles onto a man abusing a young female slave. Being the hero type, he has to intervein. Before he knows what hit him, he has gained custody of three young slaves kidnapped from their native world of Karres. He can't abandon them on Porlumma and he certainly can't take them back to Illyla, but returning them to their own planet will cost him the bulk of his profits. Losses or no, he decides to take them home. Who knows, maybe their parents will be grateful and he can even make a profit on the thing. This is a fantastic novel. Schmitz mixes space-opera heroics with personal drama. He handles the relationship between Goth and Pausert with just the right touch allowing both to mature and learn to trust one another. Schmitz mixes just enough humor into the plot to give the reader a break, then throws him (and Pausert) back into a new crisis. Five Stars Want to buy it? Click the button:

    Schmitz, James H
James Schmitz was born in 1911 in Germany of American parents and he served with the USAF during WW2. The Witches of Karres is fairly typical of his works in that it has a group of people who have psi powers, but is set outside the general background of the majority of his stories - the worlds of the Federation of the Hub though there are similarities in the way in which psychic powers are used.
    Shaw, Bob
His full name was Robert Shaw and he was born in Northern Ireland though he worked in the mainland from 1975, when he became a full-time writer. Before becoming a writer, Bob worked as a Structural Engineer, then in aircraft design and finally in industrial public relations.and journalism. He was involved in science fiction from an early age and had his first story published in 1954. One of his best known stories must be "Light of Other Days" (1966), which introduced the concept of 'slow glass' in which light could be trapped, to be released a number of years later. Along with a number of sequels, the above novella was publishd in novel form in 1972.
