A Debt of Honor to James H. Schmitz
    En route to Cushgar
    Fall, '99
    Gentlefolk:
If you bought this book because I have a Hugo, you're in the wrong place (James H. Schmitz never got the Hugos he deserved); but, if you bought this book because you like my writing, then come on in and welcome! Let me introduce you to some very dear friends of mine.
I'd never heard of the author but I read his book the way I read every book in those days, full tilt and as fast as I could turn the pages. When I'd turned the last page I knew this Schmitz was something unique in science fiction-so I read it again on the spot-and the next day I began a hunt for everything he'd ever written.
Then came a second happy circumstance…. Mark Owings, a friend (and the book dealer who'd been setting aside back issues of any SF magazine that had a story by Schmitz for me), asked me to write a "scholarly" introduction to the bibliography of Schmitz he had compiled.
For the first time, instead of plunging headlong through the stories, I took a close and careful look at what I was reading, and I began to understand why Schmitz was so different from other writers and why I loved his work so.

This site is dedicated to Science Fiction author James H. Schmitz (1911 - 1981). Schmitz was not a prolific author, publishing about seventy works from 1943 through 1974, including only four novels. But there is a certain something about a Schmitz story that his fans have been trying to pin down for over thirty years. Like listening to Mozart or Beethoven, when you read a Schmitz story you know exactly who wrote it. (Sorry for the mixed metaphor there.) His fans have joined together on the Internet to discuss his works and perhaps even to get them back into print for others to enjoy. You can join this discussion via email. Just send a message with the BODY "Subscribe Comweb [email address]" to the list server . (You can "unsubscribe" to the same address.) There is also an archive of past messages you can read.

The Neutral Heroine of James H. Schmitz
    by Janet Kagan
Science fiction has been accused of many failings; within and without the field, critics have taken up arms ranging from popguns to shotguns to now and then a skilled rapier. Some wish to better the field, some only to prove their superiority to it. Some have lacked a sufficient overview of the genre and miscalculated as a result; some were unable to achieve any distance from it and loved everything regardless of its worth. Sturgeon's law (Ninety percent of everything is crap!) applies to critics of SF as well as to SF. During the Women's Liberation Movement, a whole new set of criteria for judging literature has been developing Germaine Greer has discussed the role of women in adventure literature, Joanna Russ ( i ) (among others) the "image" of women in SF in particular. Greer ( ii ) is perhaps unfamiliar with SF. Russ is less easily forgiven, for, like so many of her predecessors, she judges SF by its worst examples and concludes that the field as a whole has given women a raw deal. I cannot agree. In fact, science fiction has, in general, been more accepting of women and more acceptable in its views of women than has the general literature. Despite the severe restrictions placed on the genre, it has produced such authors as John Brunner, Samuel R. Delany, Ursula LeGuin, J.T. M'Intosh (sic), James H. Schmitz, Philip Wylie and John Wyndham (to mention just a few) who are notable for their female characters.

    Stories in Chronological Order
If you know what a vatch is, you're at the right page! The stories of James H. Schmitz were largely published between 1949 and 1973, in Science Fiction pulps like Astounding Science Fiction and Galaxy James H. Schmitz always stormed through an exciting tale, never stopping to see if his readers had caught up. His elaborate and consistant galactic politics, technology, and assortment of aliens and monsters, paved the way for future SciFi writers with well-planned future history. For his time, or anyone else's, though, he was known for his strong characterization of females, and even the elderly, in rock 'em sock 'em action yarns. The best BIG news is - Baen Books has published The Complete Federation of the Hub in five volumes. Find all of your favourite James H. Schmitz stories in these new anthologies. There's been some discussion of them on the Federation Comweb - see below - and also the Baen message board
    Great Stuff!
The Schmitz Encyclopedia is the definitive site on James H. Schmitz! Guy Gordon has added artwork from original publications, both colour covers and black and white line drawings, essays on his work, letters, and photographs. His aim is to post everything in the world on JHS, and by golly! - I think he's got a shot at it!
