Siegfried Sassoon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Siegfried Loraine Sassoon September 8 September 1 ) was an English poet and author. He became known as a writer of satirical anti-war verse during World War I , but later won acclaim for his prose work. Sassoon was born in Matfield Kent , to a Jewish father and English mother. His father, Alfred, one of the wealthy Sassoon merchant family, was disinherited for marrying outside the faith. His mother, Teresa, belonged to the Thornycroft family, sculptors responsible for many of the best-known statues in London her brother was Sir Hamo Thornycroft . There was no German blood in Siegfried's family; he owed his unusual first name to his mother's predilection for the operas of Wagner . His middle name was taken from the surname of a clergyman with whom she was friendly. Sassoon was educated at Marlborough College in Wiltshire , and at Clare College, Cambridge , where he studied both law and history from 1905 to 1907. However, he dropped out of university without a degree, and spent the next few years hunting, playing cricket, and privately publishing a few volumes of not very highly acclaimed poetry. His income was just enough to prevent his having to seek work, but not enough to live extravagantly. His first real success was

Siegfried Sassoon's Attestation papers, 1914 Siegfried Sassoon and the First World War It is a war now like any other of the mobbing, many aimed cataclysms that have shattered empires and devastated the world; it is a war without point, a war that has lost its soul, it has become mere incoherent fighting and destruction, a demonstration in vast and tragic forms of the stupidity and ineffectiveness of our species H G Wells, Mr Britling Sees It Through (1916) The war poet, Siegfried Sassoon, joined up on the day the First World War broke out, on August 4 th Known as "Mad Jack" for his bravery in the field, he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry, but became disillusioned with the war, making a public statement in 1917 that "the war is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it" which led to his treatment for mental disorder in Craiglockhart Military Hospital.

Siegfried Sassoon: A Poet's Pilgrimage JOSEPH PEARCE Siegfried Sassoon is arguably the greatest of the War Poets. The ending of the second of the century's global conflagrations marked the beginning of Sassoon's final approach to the Catholic faith. Influenced to a degree by Catholic friends such as Ronald Knox and Hilaire Belloc, but to a far greater degree by the experience of his own life, he was received into the Church in September 1957, shortly after his 71st birthday. After a lifetime of mystical searching he had finally found his way Home.
Siegfried Sassoon is arguably the greatest of the War Poets. Arguably, but not indisputably. Many critics, begging to differ with such a judgment, would argue that his friend, Wilfred Owen, was more gifted and could boast a superior achievement in verse. Yet, if they are right, Sassoon becomes, if not the greatest, then certainly the most important of the War Poets. Sassoon was Owen's mentor, without whom Owen would probably have never written the acerbically assonant verse for which both men are celebrated. Owen was killed in action on the Western front in 1918, one of the final victims of the dying embers of World War I. As such, he remains cocooned in the incorruptible image of eternal youth. A slaughtered lamb, butchered before his gifts could develop. Sassoon, on the other hand, lived to a ripe old age, growing ever closer to Christ and His Church. His life, and the poetry that was its expression, would be one long and contemplative search for truth, a poet's pilgrimage.

Sassoon was brought up in Kent and was educated at Marlborough College. He went to Clare College, Cambridge, but left without taking a degree. His family's wealth meant that he did not need to work, so he followed country pursuits, especially hunting, as well as spending time in London. His first collection of verse was published privately in 1906.

Documents
Siegfried Sassoon Siegfried Sassoon, one of the best known poets to emerge from the First World War, enlisted in the ranks of the Sussex Yeomanry on the outbreak of war in August 1914, and was commissioned the following year into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Serving as a subaltern on the Western Front, Sassoon gained a distinguished reputation, receiving the Military Cross in June 1916 and earning the nickname "Mad Jack" for his daring exploits in action. Wounded in the shoulder in April 1917, Sassoon was evacuated back to Britain. During his convalescence his discontent with the course of the war became more pronounced, and in July he issued a public declaration of his belief that the war was being deliberately prolonged by those who had the power to end it. Narrowly avoiding a military court martial through the intervention of his friend Robert Graves, the authorities decided that Sassoon's behaviour was a direct result of neurasthenia ("shell-shock"), and he was ordered to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where he was placed under the psychiatric treatment of Dr W H R Rivers.
