William Stonehill Saroyan Born: August 31, 1908
Place: Fresno, California
Died: May 18, 1981
Place: Fresno, California W illiam Saroyan was born in Fresno, California on August 31, 1908. His parents had both emigrated to the United States from Armenia. When Saroyan was three years old, his father died, and his mother was unable to provide for the four Saroyan children. William and his siblings were placed in an orphanage in Oakland, California. Then, after five years of being raised in an orphanage, the Saroyan children were reunited with their mother, and Mrs. Saroyan was able to re-establish the family in Fresno. W illiam attended school until he was fifteen, when he left high school to try his luck out in the world. He took on odd jobs, and began to write, hoping to get his work published. His work was not an immediate thundering success. Some of his poems and a few short stories did get published, but his genuine breakthrough came when The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze was published in 1934. This is the work that catapulted Saroyan into the spotlight, and really made him an overnight success. From that point on, Saroyan was able to write and be published, and he continued to please his widespread audience. During the course of his life, Saroyan produced more than sixty books. Many of his works were based on autobiographical themes; others explored the world of Armenian immigrants, and the themes of freedom, brotherly love, and hope and poverty during the Great Depression.

From Library Journal - First published in 1958, this reader provides a wide selection of Saroyan's work including whole short stories and selections from plays and novels.
Book Description - This is the most complete and generous sampling of the first half of an indispensable American writer's career. Here is the vintage Saroyan of the early 1930's and early 1940's, the period during which the short stroy writer, playwright, and novelist achieved a critical and popular success comparable to F. Scott Fitzgerald's during the 1920's. The selection has the added distinction of having been edited, introduced and annotated by Aram Saroyan himself, in effect comprising the writer's own mid-career overview of the best of his work. The Human Comedy by William Saroyan (Author)
From the Publisher - The place is Ithaca, in California's San Joaquin Valley. The time is World War II. The family is the Macauley's a mother, sister, and three brothers whose struggles and dreams reflect those of America's second-generation immigrants.. In particular, fourteen-year-old Homer, determined to become one of the fastest telegraph messengers in the West, finds himself caught between reality and illusion as delivering his messages of wartime death, love, and money brings him face-to-face with human emotion at its most naked and raw.

A Quote...
I should like to see any power in this world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose history is ended, whose wars have been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, whose literature is unread, whose music is unheard and whose prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia, see if you can do it. Send them from their homes into the desert, let them have neither bread nor water. Burn their homes and churches. Then, see if they will not laugh again, see if they will not sing and pray again. For, when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a new Armenia. William Saroyan

Literary San Francisco: William Saroyan
348 Carl Street Flamboyant writer and humanitarian William Saroyan became a literary sensation at the age of 26 when his story, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, was published by Story magazine in 1932. Around that time he lived at 348 Carl Street. His play, "The Time of Your Life," was drawn from characters and situations at a well known Pacific Avenue (then Pacific Street) pub owned by Izzy Gomez. In "The Time of Your Life," the principal setting is "Nick's," #3 Pacific . If the address still existed, it would be located at the end of a pedestrian walkway between Buildings 1 and 2 of the Golden Gateway Commons. Off stage action occurs at nearby Pier 27 . Saroyan, who called himself "The World's Greatest Writer," won the Pulitzer Prize for the play but declined it and the $1,000 purse, insisting that commerce should not drive the arts. Saroyan's novel The Human Comedy draws from his own experiences as a messenger in his native Fresno. Unique among writers, Armenian American Saroyan advanced Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration. Saroyan once said, "No city invites the heart to come to life as San Francisco does. Arrival in San Francisco is an experience in living." mistersf.com home
