    Meet the Author
    William Saroyan
William Saroyan, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in Fresno, California, in 1908. He left school at age thirteen, but he remained an avid reader. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan's success continued. His novel The Human Comedy was published in 1942 and made into a movie, for which he won an Academy Award in 1943 for the best writing of an original motion picture story. Saroyan became very popular through the 1940s and 1950s; altogether, he published more than 60 books. He died in 1981. In the last book published during his lifetime

William Saroyan was an internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. His fame, and his most enduring achievements as a writer, date from the 1930's. He dazzled, entertained and uplifted millions, with hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, memoirs and essays; they continue to charm and touch us today. Saroyan's talent was first projected to the world through an Armenian-English newspaper, Hairenik of Boston. In 1934, at the age of 26, with the publication of his first book The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, William Saroyan became an overnight literary sensation. His first successful Broadway play was My Heart's in the Highlands, in 1939, and in the same year, Saroyan was the first American writer to win both The Drama Critic's Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize, for his play, The Time of Your Life. He refused to accept the Pulitzer Prize on the grounds that, "Commerce should not patronize art...," and he added, "it is no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan is unique among writers. He acknowledged the Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration, especially notable in the book-of-the-month choice, My Name Is Aram, in 1940. Another book-of-the-month choice, The Human Comedy, published in 1943, was dedicated to his mother and made into an MGM movie which won him an Academy Award Oscar, for Best Writing Original Screen Story.

Their first order of business was the following resolution: “By unanimous vote, [the] Deed of Trust was accepted from William Saroyan of a manuscript of ‘The Time of Your Life’ and of sixteen short stories, to be made available for literary and educational use by the public.” Thus was the beginning of 37 years of Foundation activities.

    William Saroyan
US writer known for his stories celebrating the joy of living in spite of poverty, 1908-1981
The greatest happiness you can have is knowing that you do not necessarily require happiness. I am interested in madness. I believe it is the biggest thing in the human race, and the most constant. How do you take away from a man his madness without also taking away his identity? In those days, there was something more to the world than there is now. In the time of your life, live - so that in that wondrous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite variety and mystery of it. Ignore the obvious, for it is unworthy of the clear eye and the kindly heart. If you're alive, you can't be bored in San Francisco. If you're not alive, San Francisco will bring you to life. If you can measure it, don't. If you can weigh it, it isn't worth the bother. It isn't what you're after. It isn't going to get it. I was never interested in the obvious, or in the details one takes for granted, and everybody seemed to be addicted to the obvious, being astonished by it, and forever harping about the details which I had long ago weighted, measured, and discarded as irrelevant and useless.

    BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1908 in Fresno California to Armenian immigrant parents, William (Aram) Saroyan would go on to become one of the top writers of the mid twentieth century. An incredibly talented writer, Saroyan tried his hand successfully at almost everything. Novels, plays, songs, and short stories all grace this writer’s resume. His birthplace of Fresno and his experiences in the San Joaquin Valley proved useful to his later writing. His father died when he was three years old, after which he was sent to an orphanage for four years. He left school at the young age of 15 and decided to become a writer. This decision was based partly on his own father’s attempts at writing. His experience with death at such a young age, his time spent in the orphanage, and in later years, his formal schooling, created the "joyous sorrow" which characterizes Saroyan’s works. By 1920, Saroyan was able to live off of his writing, though mainstream recognition was only given after 1934’s short story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze". In 1939 My Heart’s in the Highlands opened to critical acclaim. His next big step came with the play Time of Your Life later in the same year, which was given the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Though he refused the prize for himself on grounds that art should not be given awards, especially by the rich who had no understanding of such things. However, he did accept the Drama Critic’s Circle Award in that same year. Shortly after, in 1940, he again established himself in the genre of short stories with his collection titled My Name is Aram. 1940 also found Saroyan at MGM filming The Human Comedy. This novel turned movie won the Academy Award for best picture and original story for the play.

    William Saroyan
    Biography
Novelist, short-story writer, dramatist, and essayist, William Saroyan was born in Fresno, California in 1908. A high-school dropout, Saroyan was largely self-educated and decided at an early age to pursue a career as a writer, drawing on his experience as an Armenian-American growing up in California. His first published works were sketches in The Overland Monthly in 1928, which inspired him to seek his fortune in New York City.
In 1934 Story Magazine printed "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze." The immediate public acclaim led to publication of the collection The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze and Other Stories (1934) by Random House. He followed this success with two more short story collections in 1936, Three Times Three and Inhale and Exhale. Transforming one of these stories into his first dramatic production, My Heart's in the Highlands (1939), Saroyan then wrote The Time of Your Life (1939-40), for which he received both New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize. The same year he released the story collection, My Name is Aram (1940), a Book of the Month Club selection.
In late 1941 Saroyan agreed to work for Louis B. Mayer in Hollywood. This resulted both in the Oscar-winning MGM film, The Human Comedy, (1943) as well as the popular novelized version of the original screenplay, published by Harcourt Brace simulatenously with the movie's opening.
