Main Literature htmlAdWH('7002737', '234', '60'); William Saroyan William Saroyan was an internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. His fame, and his most enduring achievements as a writer, date from the 1930's. He dazzled, entertained and uplifted millions, with hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, memoirs and essays; they continue to charm and touch us today. Saroyan's talent was first projected to the world through the medium of an Armenian-English newspaper, Hairenik of Boston. In 1934, at the age of 26, with the publication of his first book The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze , William Saroyan became an overnight literary sensation. His first successful Broadway play was My Heart's in the Highlands in 1939, and in the same year, Saroyan was the first American writer to win both the Drama Critic's Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for his play, The Time of Your Life . He refused to accept the Pulitzer Prize on the grounds that, "Commerce should not patronize art...," and he added, "it is no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan is unique among writers. He acknowledged the Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration, especially notable in the book-of-the-month choice

    William Saroyan
William Saroyan, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in Fresno, California, in 1908. He left school at age thirteen, but he remained an avid reader. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan's success continued. His novel The Human Comedy was published in 1942 and made into a movie, for which he won an Academy Award in 1943 for the best writing of an original motion picture story. Saroyan became very popular through the 1940s and 1950s; altogether, he published more than 60 books. He died in 1981. In the last book published during his lifetime

The other collections are the William Saroyan Papers (M0978), which also come from the Saroyan family, the William Saroyan Notebooks 1932 - 1939 (M1022), the William Saroyan and Grace Stone Coates Correspondence 1930-1938 (Misc 938), and the William Saroyan and Goldie Weisberg Correspondence 1930-1938 (M1125). Article by Richard Ramirez about saroyan.
    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/essays/rodriguez_5-26.html
    TIME OF OUR LIVES
    MAY 26, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Richard Rodriguez, editor at the "Pacific News Service," discusses the work of author William Saroyan. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Richard Rodriguez of the "Pacific News Service" considers the work of a distinguished American writer. RICHARD RODRIGUEZ: His name was William Saroyan. He was the first writer I fell in love with, boyishly in love. I was held by his unaffected voice, his sentimentality, his defiant individualism. I found myself in the stories he told. Saroyan was the son of Armenian parents who settled in Fresno, in California’s Central Valley. He was born in 1908, almost my own father’s age. Growing up in Sacramento a few hundred miles North a generation later I learned from Saroyan that you do not have to live in some great cityin New York or Parisin order to write. Life in Fresno can be rendered as literature. Late this spring and for most of the summer Stanford University is celebrating its acquisition of the literary archives of William Saroyan. Odd that the letters and the manuscripts of Saroyan would end up here. When I was a student at Stanford, a generation ago, the name of William Saroyan was never mentioned by any professor in the English Department. William Saroyan apparently was not considered a major American talent. Instead, we undergraduates set about the business of psychoanalyzing Hamlet and deconstructing Lolita. In my mind Saroyan belongs with John Steinbeck, a fellow small town Californian and of the same generation. He belongs with Thornton Wilder, with those writers whose aching love of America was formed by the Depression and the shadow of war.
