Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois on January 6, 1878. He was the son of Swedish immigrants. He grew up in the fields of Illinois. After the age of thirteen, he dropped out of school and became a day laborer. His numerous odd jobs helped him gain experience as a writer and poet. He then served in Puerto Rico in the Spanish-American war. After the war, he practically forced himself through Lombard College, now known as Knox College. In 1908, he married Lilian Steichen and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had three children together. In 1913, he moved to Chicago, where he wrote his first famous poem. Some of the odd jobs he had then were novelist, journalist, children's author, and film critic. He toured the country, not just reading his poems, but also playing the guitar and singing folk songs. His fame as a historian began when he wrote his great six volume biography on Abraham Lincoln. He believed that previous biographies had idealized Lincoln too much. For these he received the Pulitzer Prize. He collected his favorite songs in The American Songbag . He also created countless more novels and poems throughout his lifetime. His collected letters were published in 1968. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received it’s gold medal for history in 1952 and later poetry in 1953. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. This great novelist and poet died on July 22, 1967.

Fee Information
Carl Sandburg, nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, newspaper columnist, folksinger, author of American fairytales, and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, provided broad and enduring 20th century insight into the circumstances, worth and spirit of the American people. He passionately championed for the everyday working person, those who may neither have had the words nor the power to speak for themselves. A Midwesterner most of his life, Sandburg and his family moved to North Carolina in 1945. This farm offered the peace and solitude required for his writing and offered Mrs. Sandburg over 30 acres of pasture-land that she desired to raise her champion dairy goats. Sandburg, having already achieved literary fame before relocating to North Carolina, continued to write and lecture and published more than one-third of his works during his 22 years at Connemara. Today the site, managed by the National Park Service, preserves the Sandburg legacy for future generations. The historic landscape consists of the Sandburg residence, a dairy goat barn complex that is home to the park's Connemara Farms goat herd, sheds, rolling pastures, mountainside woods, five miles of hiking trails on moderate to steep terrain, two small lakes, several ponds, flower and vegetable gardens, and an apple orchard.

Add to a Notebook Carl Sandburg Carl Sandburg was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on January 6, 1878. His parents, August and Clara Johnson, had emigrated to America from the north of Sweden. After encountering several August Johnsons in his job for the railroad, the Sandburg's father renamed the family. The Sandburgs were very poor; Carl left school at the age of thirteen to work odd jobs, from laying bricks to dishwashing, to help support his family. At seventeen, he traveled west to Kansas as a hobo. He then served eight months in Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American war. While serving, Sandburg met a student at Lombard College, the small school located in Sandburg's hometown. The young man convinced Sandburg to enroll in Lombard after his return from the war. Sandburg worked his way through school, where he attracted the attention of Professor Philip Green Wright, who not only encouraged Sandburg's writing, but paid for the publication of his first volume of poetry, a pamphlet called Reckless Ecstasy (1904). While Sandburg attended Lombard for four years, he never received a diploma (he would later receive honorary degrees from Lombard, Knox College, and Northwestern University). After college, Sandburg moved to Milwaukee, where he worked as an advertising writer and a newspaper reporter. While there, he met and married Lillian Steichen (whom he called Paula), sister of the photographer Edward Steichen. A Socialist sympathizer at that point in his life, Sandburg then worked for the Social-Democrat Party in Wisconsin and later acted as secretary to the first Socialist mayor of Milwaukee from 1910 to 1912.

The family decided to move to the mountains of Western North Carolina for the climate and privacy the area offered. Sandburg lived here for twenty-two years and in that time he lectured, traveled and continued to write and publish his work. What is interesting about the house is that it was left in the condition that it was when Carl Sandburg died, as though nothing had changed. The house remains full of books and magazines. When the Sandburgs moved there they brought more than 14,000 volumes. If you look closely you can see that some of the magazines bear the subscription address of Sandburg. There is a sense that a writer lived here. On the tour you can view the upstairs room he used for writing, where the walls are absolutely lined with books. He worked there each night till the early morning and slept late. His daughter Janet used to bring him his breakfast of cheese, bread and goat milk, a thermos of coffee, and some honey and fruit. When he began his day he answered letters and wrote in various places around the house, including his favorite outdoor writing spot, sitting on a chair on the rocks behind the house.

Carl Sandburg Biography
Author-poet Carl Sandburg was born in the three-room cottage at 313 East Third Street in Galesburg on January 6, 1878. The modest house, which is maintained by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, reflects the typical living conditions of a late nineteenth century working-class family. Many of the furnishings once belonged to the Sandburg family. Behind the home stands a small wooded park. There, beneath Remembrance Rock, lie the ashes of Carl Sandburg, who died in 1967.
Early Years
Carl August Sandburg was born the son of Swedish immigrants August and Clara Anderson Sandburg. The elder Sandburg, a blacksmith's helper for the nearby Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, purchased the cottage in 1873. Carl, called "Charlie" by the family, was born the second of seven children in 1878. A year later the Sandburgs sold the small cottage in favor of a larger house in Galesburg. Carl Sandburg worked from the time he was a young boy. He quit school following his graduation from eighth grade in 1891 and spent a decade working a variety of jobs. He delivered milk, harvested ice, laid bricks, threshed wheat in Kansas, and shined shoes in Galesburg's Union Hotel before traveling as a hobo in 1897.
