Sand, George (1804-1876) Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, better known as George Sand, is as infamous for her cigar-in-hand cross-dressing as she is famous for her eighty novels, twenty plays, and numerous political tracts. Sand also claimed an infamous ancestry. Her great-great-grandfather, an eighteenth-century king of Poland, sired out of wedlock her great-grandfather, who in turn fathered an illegitimate daughter, Sand's grandmother, Aurore Dupin de Franceuil. On her father's death, the future writer lived in the worlds of two women who hated each other, her aristocratic grandmother, owner of the estate of Nohant-Vic in Berry, and her mother, daughter of a Parisian bird seller. From her grandmother Sand inherited an independent spirit, and from her mother, a devotion to socialism. Sponsor Message.

Sand, George Pronunciation Key Sand, George , pseud. of Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin, baronne Dudevant E E Sandeau Musset Chopin Her first novel, Rose et Blanche (1831), was in collaboration with Jules Sandeau (a shortening of his last name provided her with the pseudonym which she kept all her life), with whom she had previously written articles for the journal Figaro. Of her own novels, La Mare au diable (1846, tr. The Haunted Pool, 1890) and [the master bell-ringers] (1853) are considered masterpieces. Notable also are Indiana (1832, tr. 1881), Mauprat Consuelo (1843, tr. 1846), (1848, tr. Francis the Waif, La Petite Fadette (1849, tr. Fanchon the Cricket, 1864), and (1873, tr. Tales of a Grandmother, 1930), a collection of Breton fairy tales. All these books are distinguished by a romantic love of nature as well as an extravagant moral idealism. She also wrote a number of plays. Much of her work was autobiographical, notably Histoire de ma vie Elle et lui [she and he] (1859), which concerns her life with Musset; and

Aurore DUPIN, dite
George SAND

an amazing woman
George Sand (1804-1876) "The world will know and understand me someday.
But if that day does not arrive, it does not greatly matter.
I shall have opened the way for other women."
George Sand was an amazing author, personality, and all-around woman. She earned as much notoriety for her Bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. Born Aurore Dupin, she was the most famous woman writer in 19th-century France. A prolific and iconoclastic author of novels, stories, plays, essays, and memoirs, she represented the epitome of French romantic idealism. She demanded for women the freedom in living that was a matter of course to the men of her day. George's first independent novel, Indiana , the story of an unhappy wife who struggles to free herself from the imprisonment of marriage (explicitly called a form of slavery), made her an overnight celebrity. Subsequent novels, such as Valentine and Lélia , astounded readers with their frank exploration of women's sexual feelings and their passionate call for women's freedom to find emotional satisfaction. In the eyes of many critics, George's masterpiece is her autobiography. Though she was a brilliant writer, she was perhaps most famous for her personality and lifestyle. I have read several of her books, but her work is not why I think she is an amazing woman. Rather, it is her personal life...just being who she was is what makes her an amazing woman, especially considering the time when she lived and how radical a person she was - not only for that time, but for modern times as well.

GEORGE SAND
SAND, GEORGE (1804-1876), the pseudonym of Madame Amandine Lucile Aurore Dudevant, ne Dupin, the most prolific authoress in the history of literature, and unapproached among the women novelists of France. Her life was as strange and adventurous as any of her novels, which are for the most part idealized versions of the multifarious incidents of her life. In her self-revelations she followed Rousseau, her first master in style, but while Rousseau in his Confessions darkened all the shadows, George Sand is the heroine of her story, often frail and faulty, but always a woman more sinned against than sinning. Thanks, however, to her voluminous correspondence that has recently been published and to family documents that her French biographers have unearthed, there are now full materials for tracing the history of her public and private career, and for forming a clear and unbiased estimate of her character and genius. Passing by her infantine recollections, which go back further than even those of Dickens, we find her at the age of three crossing the Pyrenees to join her father who was on Murats staff, occupying with her parents a suite ofrooms in the royal palace, adopted as the child of the regiment, nursed by rough old sergeants, and dressed in a complete suit of uniform to please the general. From the free out-door life at Nohant she passed at thirteen to the convent of the English Augustinians at Paris, where for the first two years she never went outside the walls. Nothing better shows the plasticity of her character than. the ease with which she adapted herself to this sudden change. The volume which describes her conventual life is as graphic as Miss Bronts Villette, but we can only dwell on one passage of it. Tired of mad pranks, in a fit of home-sickness, she found herself one evening in the convent chapel.
